A Writing Curriculum For Grade Five Using Literary Models, Virginia Ann Smith Aug 1983

A Writing Curriculum For Grade Five Using Literary Models, Virginia Ann Smith

Theses

Three major areas of concern influenced this writer's decision to investigate writing and develop a writing curriculum for fifth grade children based on the use of literary models as springboards for writing .

Recognition of the importance of adequate writing skills in order to participate in various functions of our society provided the first area of concern. The second major concern was related to the apparent difficulties and failures experienced by students in coping with the complexities of the writing process. This concern stemmed from classroom experiences while trying to help children learn writing skills. A third area of concern …

Difficulties Of Learning English As A Second Language For Thai Speakers, Tipsuda Rutngamlug Jul 1983

Difficulties Of Learning English As A Second Language For Thai Speakers, Tipsuda Rutngamlug

Theses

The primary hypothetical question for this study was: Would a formal ESL program make a decided difference in terms of reducing English phonological and syntactic problems for Thai speakers learning English? The linguistic data was collected from a limited sample (22) of native Thai speakers in the St. Louis area. The subjects were divided into two groups: those with ESL training (Group 1) and those without ESL training (Group 2). A series of identical selected sentences were recorded from both groups. The selected sentences contained phonological and syntactic English structures which have been found to be problematic for Thai speakers. …

Parsing Natural Language, Leonard E. Wilcox Jan 1983

Parsing Natural Language, Leonard E. Wilcox

Theses

People have long been intrigued by the possibility of using a computer to "understand" natural language. Most researchers attempting to solve this problem have begun their efforts by trying to have the computer recognize the underlying syntactic form (the parse tree) of the sentence. This thesis presents an overview of the history of syntactic parsing of natural language, and it compares the major methods that have been used. Linguistically, two recent grammars are described: transformational grammar and systemic grammar. Computationally, three parsing strategies are described and compared: top-down parsing, bottom-up parsing, and a combination of both of these methods. Several …

A Design Of A Master Of Arts In Education Program For The Teaching Of English As A Second Language, Susan Relyea Dec 1982

A Design Of A Master Of Arts In Education Program For The Teaching Of English As A Second Language, Susan Relyea

Theses

This study is undertaken in an attempt to create a viable curriculum for a Master of Arts in Education for the teaching of English as a Second Language. The field of English as a Second Language has evolved into a profession unto its own only in the last thirty years and has been attracting professionals who have had little or no training in pedagogy or English as a Second Language methodology. Much has been learned about the field in the past thirty years. Second language teachers must have special training that is different from English teachers and foreign language teachers. …

Bedouin Textiles Of Saudi Arabia, Celia Wright May 1982

Bedouin Textiles Of Saudi Arabia, Celia Wright

Theses

During the past year I have had the opportunity of working closely with a collection of Saudi Arabian woven textiles and other crafts. These textiles are characterized by the combination of a great variety of techniques, indicating a diffusion of techniques between the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent cultures. The frequent combination of both warp-faced and weft-faced structures within a single woven piece is particularly fascinating, as it rarely occurs in other cultures. This thesis will research the techniques and designs used in Saudi weaving and in the weaving of adjacent and related cultures in Africa and the Middle East which …

A Descriptive Study Of Participation In A Parent-Child Contracted Reading Program, Jeanie Mccutchan Jan 1982

A Descriptive Study Of Participation In A Parent-Child Contracted Reading Program, Jeanie Mccutchan

Theses

An investigation was conducted to determine if scholastic achievement and grade level would affect participation in a parent-child reading contract program. Subjects were 108 students in grades 1-6 who were systematically sampled from 1,095 students who signed contracts to participate in the Wentzville Spring Into Reading Program.

A chi square was used to determine if there was a significant difference between high reading achievers and low reading achievers both for primary and intermediate grade levels and at all grade levels. This was done to evaluate whether reading achievement would affect participation in the reading program. Nominal data was tabulated showing …

Personality And Mysticism: An Experimental Design, Deborah Marie Ellison-Rogers Jan 1982

Personality And Mysticism: An Experimental Design, Deborah Marie Ellison-Rogers

Theses

This research investigates the relationship between personality as measured by the Singer-Loomis Inventory of Personality and the quantity of mystical experiences as measured by the Mysticism Scale. A review of the literature shows that introverts have more awareness of the archetypes and the archetypes often appear in mystical experiences. Awareness of mystical experiences is precisely what the Mysticism Scale measures.

The results were largely insignificant . However, there was a definite skew toward introversion in samples for both the pilot project and the research project . It is felt that this skew is a function of the choice of populations …

Laboratory Experiences In Listening Comprehension For English As A Second Language Program, Sima Mokhtari Dec 1980

Laboratory Experiences In Listening Comprehension For English As A Second Language Program, Sima Mokhtari

Theses

This study is undertaken in an attempt to help teachers to consider listening comprehension as a skill which is different from pronunciation, reading, and writing. Comprehending the second language is one of the most difficult tasks for the language learner and it is the most neglected skill in second language teaching. This neglect sterns from our ignorance about the nature of the process of listening comprehension, and from the lack of our knowledge about techniques on what and how to teach students to comprehend the spoken language.

The listening comprehension skills are separate from pronunciation and grammar. This paper presents …

An Examination Of The Interface Between Cross-Cultural Trainers And The Business Community In The United States, From The Perspective Of The Trainer, Alexander Patico Jun 1979

An Examination Of The Interface Between Cross-Cultural Trainers And The Business Community In The United States, From The Perspective Of The Trainer, Alexander Patico

Theses

This paper is the product of a particular stage in its author's professional and intellectual development . Its purpose is to use the special vantage point of a (relatively) disinterested observer, in order to form a novel picture of a particular population, comprised of those persons who are engaged in cross-cultural training--more especially, those who, as outside consultants , seek or maintain a clientele among members of the U.S. business community. I believe it likely that this viewpoint could not as readily be taken by one who is already fully involved in the daily practice of cross-cultural training.

Every effort …

Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver May 1979

Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver

Theses

This thesis proposes a new method for assessing communicative competence among ESL learners by using discourse analysis as the foundation for a placement test. Margaret B. Silver critiques conventional evaluation tools—such as the Ilyin Oral Interview, the STEL grammar test, and cloze procedures—arguing that they fail to measure the full range of linguistic and sociolinguistic abilities necessary for real-world communication. These traditional assessments, while helpful in measuring grammatical knowledge, overlook important features such as pronunciation, intonation, kinesics, and the ability to convey meaning in context.

Silver’s approach draws on discourse analysis to evaluate how students actually use language in unscripted …

Individualization Through Remedial Teaching Techniques, Marilyn Sue Hensley Jan 1977

Individualization Through Remedial Teaching Techniques, Marilyn Sue Hensley

Theses

Using the information acquired during my study in the Lindenwood 4 program , my practicum , and classroom teaching experience , this paper should have a very significant and practical impact in the future for myself and other teachers.

This paper is unique because other research has been compiled into one paper that can help classroom teachers learn to pinpoint problems and select or develop appropriate instructional methods for its remediation. Most good teachers have not been able to individualize for all children but they have the desire.

The problem of solving individual needs while teaching in the classroom has …
