Art Therapy With The Mentally Retarded: Exploring Developmental Art Patterns Of Copying Tendencies And The Need Of Symbolism, Noranna Jean Wingender

Theses

This thesis investigates the art therapy practices used with moderately and mildly mentally retarded adults, focusing specifically on developmental art patterns, the urge to copy, and the presence or need for symbolic meaning in artistic expression. Conducted within a private residential facility, the research employs a qualitative approach rooted in developmental psychology and art therapy theory. The work examines how adult residents respond to structured and unstructured art exercises that mirror the developmental stages observed in children, particularly those outlined by Lowenfeld and Brittain.

Holistic Fitness Programs For Older Adults As A Means Towards Optimal Aging, Ellen Jean Sherman

Theses

Three objectives were focused upon regarding the potential of holistically designed fitness programs to facilitate optimal aging. Systems Approach To St. Louis State Hospital's Referral Program, Reza Vahidi

Theses

This thesis presents a systems approach to analyzing and redesigning referral and billing processes at St. Louis State Hospital in Missouri. Recognizing the growing complexity of hospital operations, the study applies systems theory to evaluate inefficiencies in the hospital’s referral program, particularly in its interactions with external agencies and community physicians. The hospital historically relied on manual procedures and fragmented communication methods that contributed to delays, inaccuracies, and underutilization of available resources.

The study examines the referral workflow from intake to admission, identifying systemic bottlenecks and proposing structured changes to improve coordination. Emphasis is placed on streamlining communication between hospital …

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin Jan 1981

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin

Theses

This thesis has several components. Its review of antipoverty literature leads-in to a theoretical perspective of the causes, effects, and remediation of poverty in the United States. A small minority of powerful individuals and corporations who monopolize decision- making apparatuses consistently make decisions which nurture unjust, inequitable allocations of the nation's resources. As they protect their vested interests, the socio- economic and political systems which perpetuate the gross economic imbalance between rich and poor are nurtured . The poor (and increasingly , the middle class) are left virtually powerless, even over the decisions which affect their own lives.

In order …

A Descriptive Survey Of Rural Doctor Procurement Programs, J. H. Seitz Jan 1981

A Descriptive Survey Of Rural Doctor Procurement Programs, J. H. Seitz

Theses

Various techniques have been used by many rural communities in an effort to recruit and maintain physicians. However, evidence indicates that if the doctor procurement program gets the community involved, results will surely follow. The community effort basically is the one factor that helps recruit and maintain physician manpower to their community. The doctor procurement committee is the foundation to form a solid structure that shows the physician that there is cooperation, dedication, desire and a sense or belonging. It is these factors, along with others discussed in this thesis that convinces the physician to relocate in the rural community.

Nineteenth Century American Painting: An Evolution In Value, Marguerite P. Walker Jan 1981

Nineteenth Century American Painting: An Evolution In Value, Marguerite P. Walker

Theses

This thesis explores the significant transformation in the market value and cultural appreciation of nineteenth century American paintings. Marguerite P. Walker investigates the historical, social, and economic factors that contributed to the evolving status of American art from a marginalized, undervalued genre to one recognized for its artistic and monetary worth. Initially viewed as crude and provincial in comparison to European works, American paintings from this period suffered from widespread prejudice. However, shifts in national identity, increased art education, and the rise of a domestic art market spurred interest in American subjects, particularly landscapes and genre scenes reflecting national pride …

Theses

It is the intent of this paper to trace the developmental history of pharmacy alluding to the profession as an integral part of medicine when treatment was simple, magically connected and filled with superstitions. It separated when medical knowledge expanded, technology advanced and regulations formalized pharmacy. Social and environmental factors established the needs for specialists to handle, compound, prepare and dispense drugs and medicines. The institutionalization of care and the entrance of the pharmacists in these institutions were influential in this separation and will be discussed. Although formally separated, pharmacy stayed intimately linked with medicine in literature and formal education …

Attitudes Of Mid-Life Mothers Toward Their Daughters' Adolescence, Terri Sweig

Theses

This paper discusses the ways in which mid-life mothers reflected their attitudes toward the emerging womanhood of their adolescent daughters through art work. It concerns natural and normal developmental stresses which occur as mothers and daughters pass through difficult life stages somewhat simultaneously. A non-clinical group of four mothers between 38 and 44-years old with daughters between 14 and 17-years old responded to five specifically designed drawing tasks derived from literature on mid-life and mothers and daughters. Information was elicited regarding each mother's relationship to her own mother, the negotiation of her own adolescence, and her present self-concept. Discussion of …

A Survey Of Radiographic Films To Determine Autoradiographic Image Intensification Capabilities, John Ross

Theses

A survey of radiographic films to establish the best donor/receiver combination for use in the autoradiographic image intensification technique was studied. Underexposed images of a 16 step aluminum wedge and a resolution target were made with Kodak film types XG-1, XL-5, XV-2, NMC or DuPont Cronex film. The underexposed, developed and processed films were treated in a subtractive photographic reducer (mixture of potassium ferricyanide and sodium thiosulfate) prior to radioactivation with an alkaline solution of sulfur-35 thiourea. Autoradiographs of the radioactivated films were made. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the intensified images and their corresponding characteristic D-Log Rel. H …

Instituting Management Changes Through Decentralized Budgeting In A Public Mental Health Setting, Wesley E. Wilber Jun 1980

Instituting Management Changes Through Decentralized Budgeting In A Public Mental Health Setting, Wesley E. Wilber

Theses

This study examines the adoption and implementation of a decentralized budgeting model within a public mental‑health institution, focusing on the administrative, financial, and organizational consequences of shifting from a centrally controlled budget framework toward local unit responsibility. Drawing on archival records, budget data, and administrative narratives from the institution’s transition period, the analysis highlights how decentralization altered decision‑making dynamics, cost behaviour, service orientation, and internal accountability structures. The decentralization initiative empowered individual units by giving them budgetary control over expenditures previously managed at the centralized level, thereby increasing their autonomy over staffing, program purchases, and resource reallocation. This shift brought …
