A Science Curriculum Incorporating Process Skill Activities Into Content-Oriented Science Programs, Holly Richards
A Science Curriculum Incorporating Process Skill Activities Into Content-Oriented Science Programs, Holly Richards
Theses
This curriculum of science activities was developed to be used with a content-oriented text in the intermediate grades of elementary school. It was specifically designed to give students additional practice in using the process skills in the various units of science, The author felt the need for this curriculum after teaching both content- and process-oriented programs, as each left much to be desired when taught in isolation.
This researcher believes that children learn best by doing, and that science is an ideal area in which to develop the skills that produce independent learners and critical thinkers. However, as research shows, …
Determining Techniques And Alternatives For Pupil Recruitment For Enrollment In The Head Start Program, Nancy Vanzant
Determining Techniques And Alternatives For Pupil Recruitment For Enrollment In The Head Start Program, Nancy Vanzant
Theses
This report examines strategies for improving recruitment and enrollment in Head Start programs serving low-income families in St. Louis. Head Start is a federally funded initiative designed to provide early childhood education, health services, and family support to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite the program’s benefits, many eligible families remain unenrolled, highlighting a persistent gap between available resources and community participation.
The study identifies multiple barriers to enrollment, including limited awareness of Head Start, transportation difficulties, and misconceptions about eligibility. Families often perceive Head Start as a program for others rather than as an opportunity for their own children, while …

The Closing Of Homer G. Phillips Hospital And Its Effect On The Infant Mortality Rate Of The City Of Saint Louis, Charles E. Crawford
Theses
The infant mortality statistics in any country reflect the social and economic well-being of its citizens. In the United States the infant mortality rate is regarded as a key indicator of the level of health of the population and by implication, as a measure of the effectiveness of the nation's health delivery system. Further , it is believed by some that infant mortality is the single most important public health problem in this country.
The effect on the infant mortality rate as related to the closing of the only acute care public hospital in an economically depressed community is observed …

Inventory Control Improvement Within The Discount Stores, Ernie Lee Robinson
Theses
This thesis examines strategies for improving inventory control in discount stores to maximize profitability and efficiency. It highlights four key factors affecting inventory management: optimum order timing, optimum order quantity, stockouts, and inventory shrinkage. Robinson emphasizes that discount retailers must carefully plan their stock replenishment processes to avoid excessive overstocking or running out of essential products during peak seasons.
The study discusses various inventory categories, including working stock, safety stock, remnant stock, seasonal stock, and pipeline stock, explaining their roles in maintaining a balanced supply. It also explores reordering methods, such as fixed quantity and fixed cycle reordering, to ensure …
Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart
Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart
Theses
The Quality Control Circle attempts to solve management and production problems using a participative management style. This study represents an analysis of how the Quality Control Circle emerged in Japan and efforts in the U. S. to Americanize the concept. It is important to note that participative management represents a single management style. This style is not recommended for every organization. Organizations must select the appropriate management style to accomplish conceived goals and the style must fit within their particular corporate culture. The Quality Control Circle is an outgrowth of participative management and is not-all inclusive of participative management ideals.
Motivation, Management Motivation, And Its Perceived Decline In American Bureaucratic Organizations In The Context Of Changing Attitudes And Values, Jon Lawrence Johnson
Motivation, Management Motivation, And Its Perceived Decline In American Bureaucratic Organizations In The Context Of Changing Attitudes And Values, Jon Lawrence Johnson
Theses
This Culminating Project represents an inquiry into the existence, applications, and parameters of human motivation and its impact on perceived management attitudes, values, and motivation to manage.
The topic is examined from three vantage points. Part I embodies a selective indoctrination in human motivation concepts and suggests relevant organizational applications and examples in illustration. The term "motivation" has evolved into a popular but often misapplied catch phrase. Therefore, a foundation in prominent human motivation theory is provided as precedent to issues subsequently discussed in the Project, to offer the reader an accurate base of subject knowledge.
Part II addresses the …

Investigation Of The Radiometric Integrity Of The Theogram After Its Raster Scan Lines Are Removed Through Spatial Filtration, Joan Allamena
Investigation Of The Radiometric Integrity Of The Theogram After Its Raster Scan Lines Are Removed Through Spatial Filtration, Joan Allamena
Theses
Thermograms are records of density levels which correspond to apparent temperatures. The process of thermographic imaging is based on Plank's law which relates temperature to radiance. It begins with the collection of quantum energy which is then converted to voltage. The voltage powers a light source to expose the recording material of the thermogram. Atmospheric effects must also be taken into consideration. The relationship which takes all variables into account can be found in appendix A.

Design, Tuning And Performance Evaluation Of An Automated Pulmonary Nodule Detection System, William Lampeter
Design, Tuning And Performance Evaluation Of An Automated Pulmonary Nodule Detection System, William Lampeter
Theses
Radiologists miss about 25-30% of all pulmonary nodules smaller than 1.0 cm. in mass screenings. A system for the automated detection of the pulmonary nodule based on that of Hallard has been designed, tuned, and tested on a 43 chest radiographs [Ballard, 1973). The goal of this system is to aid the radiologist in locating a pulmonary nodule by indicating a few sites in the radiograph that are most likely to be nodules. Computer image analysis programs that respond to specific types of anatomic features have been devised and are incorporated in a pattern recognizer, which uses linear discriminant analysis …

This report is an accounting of that project from its inception to its completion. The project has been a rewarding experience, full of learning and growth. I have …
Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari
Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari
Theses
This thesis consists of an investigation of the "mental workload" involved in a visual inspection task. A short-term laboratory experiment was conducted on twenty test subjects to study the effects of three typical job-related factors encountered in mental workload situations: load stress, time stress, and motivation. These effects were assessed through the subjects' performances as measured by speed and accuracy data. The analysis of the results revealed that an increase in load stress deteriorates both speed and accuracy, whereas time stress improves speed but only at the expense of accuracy. The expected positive influence of motivational factor (cash prizes) was …

The Role Of Art In The Expression Of Individual And Family Dynamics Related To "Anorexia Nervosa", John Joseph Collins
Theses
Art can be a powerful experience. In this project , the artwork of a client diagnosed as having "anorexia nervosa" is explored in terms of how her art expresses her personal conflicts and family dynamics. Due to the particular quality of the family system of which the anorexic is a part, it is extremely important to involve the family in the treatment plan. For this reason, the emphasis on the whole family , or more specifically, the way they relate with one another, is one prime focus in t he discussion of the client 's artwork in this study. Although …

An Investigation Into The Effects Of Dry Etching Techniques On Changing Halftone Dot-Sizes, Anthony P. Stanton
Theses
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of dry etching techniques on changing halftone dotsizes. Dry etching, or photographic color correction, has emerged in recent years as an alternative to traditional dot etching for making local corrections to color separation halftones. This study examines six factors related to dry etching. First, three types of original halftone dots were considered: laser formed (hard) dots from a Hell DC-300B scanner, laser formed (semi-hard) dots from a P.D.I, scanner, and contact screen (soft) dots from a Crosfield 510 Magnascan scanner. Second, the original dot-sizes being treated were fixed as close …

Theories Of Management: A Manual For Managers, Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger
Theses
Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger’s thesis, Theories of Management: A Manual for Managers, serves as a practical guide aimed primarily at preparing individuals for roles in middle management, especially within healthcare institutions. The manual is structured around three central areas: managing oneself, managing subordinates, and managing the organization. Schwerdtfeger argues that successful management depends on mastering all three, as they are interrelated and in constant flux due to evolving business and societal demands. Drawing from both classical and contemporary theories, including those of Taylor, Herzberg, Vroom, and Maslow, the work addresses core concepts such as motivation, job enrichment, decision-making, organizational communication, …
