Microdensitometer Digitization, Bruce W. Binns
Microdensitometer Digitization, Bruce W. Binns
Theses
The importance of performing extensive calculations on microdensitometer data makes entry of the data into a computer mandatory for many types of investigative situations. The previously available facilities in the Photographic Science department have supported only manual data entry techniques. Such techniques are slow and prone to error, greatly limiting use usefulness of the Ansco Model 4 microdensitometer available for student use. This thesis has involved the designated implementation of a low cost digitizatio technique that allows convient gathering, storage, and machine read input of data into the RIT timesharing computer facilities. A conservative increase of two orders of magnitude …

Elements Of Visual Perception, Dudley Killam
Theses
The roles of scale, contrast and spectral difference in visual detection and recognition was investigated. Geometrical target arrays were produced and projected using a rear projection apparatus. Scale was varied using combined photographic reduction and slide projection. Contrast levels were adjusted in projection of lithographic target arrays using neutral density filtration arrangements in the projection apparatus. Experimentally obtained cumulative probability of detection and combined detection and recognition was examined relative to established combinations of target scale, contrast and spectral difference. A method for the characterization of target pair differences was offered and analyzed. The relation of scale, contrast and perceptual …

Interimage Effects And The Mtf Of A Color Reversal Film, Joel Panning
Interimage Effects And The Mtf Of A Color Reversal Film, Joel Panning
Theses
Interimage effects have long been recognized as a factor in the reproduction of color. Reversal materials are no exception and exhibit interimage effects which have previously been revealed through techniques using END analysis. This study presents a method for revealing the presence of interimage effects in a reversal film's Modulation Transfer Function. Utilizing filtering techniques, two dyes of a three color transparency are eliminated from the final image by exposure and development. The remaining single dye image at a specified level is then compared to the corresponding layer and image in a colorimetrically specified neutral. The edge gradient analysis method …
A Preliminary Investigation Into The Effect Of Select Paper Characteristics On Dot Gain In Web Offset Lithography, Timothy Clark
A Preliminary Investigation Into The Effect Of Select Paper Characteristics On Dot Gain In Web Offset Lithography, Timothy Clark
Theses
This thesis describes a screening experiment designed to determine which of seven paper characteristics influence dot gain in web offset lithography. Dot gain is the enlargement of halftone dots during printing from plate to paper with a resultant increase in dot area. The variability of dot gain during a press run and from run to run is detrimental to the quality of black and white and color reproductions. The seven paper characteristics: gloss, smoothness, absorption, physical density, caliper, opacity, and formation are measurable characteristics used to describe the printability of a paper. Using one unit of a four-unit web offset …

The Effect Of Simultaneous Intensification On The Detective Quantum Efficiency, B. Desai
The Effect Of Simultaneous Intensification On The Detective Quantum Efficiency, B. Desai
Theses
The effect of simultaneous intensification on the detective quantum efficiency of Kodak high definition aerial film type 3414 is investigated. The detective quantum efficiency or DQE varies from .00086 % to .115 % for the unintensified exposure over a log exposure range of 0.9, with the peak at .1223 %. This exposure has a base+fog density of 0.06. Different degrees of simultaneous intensification result in varying values of DQE. The exposure with simultaneous intensification which produced a base+fog of 0.24 gave the maximum sensitometric speed incease by a factor of 1.38 f/stops or 158 %. This exposure varies in DQE …
Determination Of The Relationship Between Information Capacity And Identification By Simulated Aerial Photography, Michael Jones
Determination Of The Relationship Between Information Capacity And Identification By Simulated Aerial Photography, Michael Jones
Theses
The relationship between information capacity and the ability of photointerpreters to identify vehicles in simulated aerial reconnaissance was investigated. An aerial scene lighting simulator was constructed and used in the production of a series of simulated aerial reconnaissance photographs of models of military tanks and trucks. The information capacity of these photos was varied by defocussing the taking camera and the simulated ground scale was varied by changing the taking camera reduction. Duplicate positives of these images were evaluated by trained military photointerpreters who determined the resolving power and attempted to identify the vehicles from a key provided. The resulting …
Mtf For Photographic Films By Parameter Estimation In The Space And Frequency Domains, James H. Clark
Mtf For Photographic Films By Parameter Estimation In The Space And Frequency Domains, James H. Clark
Theses
A new method for determining the modulation transfer function (MTF) for photographic films is described. The MTF and corresponding line spread function are approximated by carefully chosen models which are uniquely specified by a few parametric constants. By estimating the parameters in space and frequency simultaneously, the interactions between the two domains result in improved estimates over those provided by either domain alone. A computer algorithm has been written to determine the parameter constants that define the best-fit model for the emulsion MTF.
The Slow Settling Of A Sphere In A Viscous Fluid In The Proximity Of A Corner, Joseph Kisutcza
The Slow Settling Of A Sphere In A Viscous Fluid In The Proximity Of A Corner, Joseph Kisutcza
Theses
Experimental settling velocities for three different sizes of Delrin spheres in Ucon lubricant were determined at 20.2 degrees Celsius in order to confirm the validity of a theoretically derived equation for the settling of a sphere in the proximity of a corner. The experiments were conducted in a wedge shaped column with a circular sector base, filled with the viscous fluid, where the angle of the wedge was varied for experimental purposes. The distance from the wedge apex to the particle was also changed for the different runs.
The experimental data gave a good approximation of the values evaluated by …
Semicontinous Ph-Parametric Pump : Experimental Study, Hsien-Chih Lee
Semicontinous Ph-Parametric Pump : Experimental Study, Hsien-Chih Lee
Theses
Voidage of SP Sephadex (C-50) ion exchanger at different aqueous buffer concentration and the pH have been estimated from draining the interstitial aqueous. Experimental results of the SP Sephadex (C-50) voidage at pH cycling zone are in quantitative agreement with previous test method, so the voidage estimated from draining the interstital aqueous can be used in pH-parametric pumping. The optional displacement volume in semicontinuous pH-parametric pump of different buffer concentration can be predicted from voidage. A semicontinuous pH-parametric pump for separating proteins has been experimentally investigated using the model system haemoglobin and albumin on a. SP Sephadex (C-50) ion exchanger. …
Management Of Manpower Planning In A Job Shop, John E. Yadlon
Management Of Manpower Planning In A Job Shop, John E. Yadlon
Theses
The object of any system of manpower planning is to provide a means to optimize manpower utilization. Within this base there is the normal requirement to provide effective utilization of equipment, materials and manpower. In a production type of environment, studies, statistics, research and supervisory manpower are readily available to best optimize manpower planning. In a job shop environment only fragments of these elements are available. Also, the available supervisory time for studies and implementation of research into statistics is usually very small. The net result is that manpower management in a job shop is all too often guessed at. …
The Introduction Of A Computerized Production Control System In A Small Manufacturing Company, Harry Leroy Zimmerly
The Introduction Of A Computerized Production Control System In A Small Manufacturing Company, Harry Leroy Zimmerly
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to acquaint the reader with the intricacies of introducing a computerized production control system into a small manufacturing company. To do this a hypothetical company was described as it existed with a manual production control system. The information flow of the manual system was described in detail.
Potential computerized production control systems with a shop data collection system were then investigated. A computerized system would expedite information flow, allow rapid assembly tracking, take accurate data and reveal the actual cost (including labor cost) of an assembly. This was done first by examining technical publications. …
Possible Efficiency Improvements In Residential, Gas Fired Furnances, Philip Louis Rinaldi
Possible Efficiency Improvements In Residential, Gas Fired Furnances, Philip Louis Rinaldi
Theses
This project examines the problem of how to improve energy utilization in a residential space heating environment. Techniques for lowering unit energy consumption are developed and the feasibility of their implementation is discussed.
The project development first establishes the magnitude of the energy wastage problem for the individual consumer and its impact on the national scale. It must be emphasized that these represent two, sometimes distinctly different justifications for reducing energy use in the home. What may be considered only a small personal waste of $50 to $100 per year may indeed--when viewed in aggregate--represent a significant burden on the …
A Kinetic Study Of The Reactions Of Poly-L-Lysine With 1-Halo-2, 4-Dinitrobenzenes, Raymond K. Rakowitz
A Kinetic Study Of The Reactions Of Poly-L-Lysine With 1-Halo-2, 4-Dinitrobenzenes, Raymond K. Rakowitz
Theses
The kinetics of the reactions of poly-L-lysine with 1-Fluoro, 1-Chloro, 1-Bromo, and 1-Iodo-2,4-Dinitrobenzenes have been studied. The investigation was done at 25°C as a function of pH and concentration. In all cases the rate of reaction increased as pH increased. In the reactions of Chloro, Bromo, and Iododinitrobenzenes with Polylysine the reaction rate is the composite of two rates; one associated with the random coil and one associated with the helical conformation. For the reaction of Fluorodinitrobenzene with Polylysine the reaction rate is the composite of four rates; two associated with the random coil and two associated with the helical …
The Determination Of The Operating Characteristics Of A Newspaper Camera Department By Using Queueing Analysis, Owen Smith
Theses
The methods of operation of many newspaper camera departments have been established over a long period by many different supervisors and department heads. The system may have been good once but went bad because the nature of the department's operations changed without corresponding changes in the system. The production manager must be able to detect when a system needs modifying. Presently, there are few tools available to the manager for evaluating the effectiveness of the department. The goal of this study was to demonstrate how a very simple analytical technique could be applied to a camera department's operations and, thereby, …

Determination Of Unknown Photographic Processing Solutions Through Buffer Curve Analysis, Richard Winslow
Determination Of Unknown Photographic Processing Solutions Through Buffer Curve Analysis, Richard Winslow
Theses
The determination of photographic processing solutions through buffer curve analysis was investigated to determine its advantages, limitations, and general usefulness. A microprocessor controlled titration system was set up to perform up to 16 unassisted titrations and record the data on a floppy disk system at a speed five times faster than the speed of manual titrations. The ingredients are not detectable by this analysis if their concentrations are much less than 1/10th the normality of the ingredient with the largest concentration that is detectable by this analysis. There is linearity between the concentration of a single ingredient solution and the …

A Comparison Of Sulfur Sensitization On Silver Bromide And Silver Iodobromide Emulsions, Frederick Marland Jr
A Comparison Of Sulfur Sensitization On Silver Bromide And Silver Iodobromide Emulsions, Frederick Marland Jr
Theses
In emulsion literature, it has been stated that silver iodobromide emulsions can be sensitized more efficiently than pure silver bromide. 20 Recently, work has been published comparing the two emulsion types, using single jet emulsions with high internal versus surface sensitivity. Tani found that when the internal / surface sensitivity ratio increased because of the addition of iodide, the ratio of sulfur sensitization also increased. 5 This showed that the increase in sensitivity upon chemical sensitization was greater for the iodobromide emulsion, and can be explained by the lower sensitivity of the unsensitized silver iodobromide. In this experiment, internal sensitivity …
Production And Evaluation Of A Holographic Lens, H. Scott Gregory
Production And Evaluation Of A Holographic Lens, H. Scott Gregory
Theses
This thesis is concerned with the production of high diffraction efficiency holographic lenses for laser machining. A holographic lens is a high efficiency, low absorption phase hologram which, in this application, is used to diffract an expanded, highpower laser beam into a desired focal point or pattern. For ideal phase holograms, the coupled–wave theory, as applied by H. Kogelnik1, predicts diffraction efficiencies as high as 100%. This implies that all the power in the expanded laser beam could be diffracted into the focal point or pattern. Single focal point holographic lenses have been produced with 40% diffraction efficiency. These lenses …
