Estimation Of Bore Loads In Quenching Of Rings By An Expanding Segmented Die, Harry Dodd May 1979

Estimation Of Bore Loads In Quenching Of Rings By An Expanding Segmented Die, Harry Dodd

Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a method that could be used to estimate the necessary bore load on a part quenched in a quenching machine with an expanding segmented die. Such a method would be of special benefit to gear manufacturers with little quenching experience; and it could also help to greatly reduce or eliminate the very costly trial and error procedure presently used. The method must be simple enough to be used in a production situation. Such a method has been developed for estimating the expander cylinder force required to produce the greatest amount of correction …

Stereoscopic Analysis Of Fatigue Products Of Photochromic Triarylemethane Leucocyanide Dyes, Thomas Stanzione Mar 1979

Stereoscopic Analysis Of Fatigue Products Of Photochromic Triarylemethane Leucocyanide Dyes, Thomas Stanzione

Theses

Thin layer chromatography and infrared spectroscopy were used to identify the fatigue products of malachite green, crystal violet, and new fuschine leucocyanides in dimethylsulfoxide and reagent alcohol. In DMSO solutions, a yellow substance with an absorption peak near 350 nanometers and a decomposition product of DMSO were found. The latter product appeared to be a mixture of several compounds, including water, dimethylsulfite , and dimethylsulfone, and was found to cause unfatigued solutions to fatigue with no exposure. In leucocyanide in reagent alcohol solutions , the leucohydroxide and leucoethoxide forms of the dyes were found in fatigued solutions. The Rf values …

The Correlation Of Hammett Substituent And Brownstein Solvent Constants With Photochromic Properties Of Triarylmethane Dye Leucocyanides, Robert Bayley

Theses

Five triarylmethane leucocyanides were synthesized from their parent dyes, and a photochromic test apparatus was designed and fabricated. The leucocyanides were tested for sensitivity and fade time in six solvents. The data was found to correlate well with Hammett substituent constants and with Brownstein solvent coefficients with certain exceptions.

On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi Feb 1979

On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi

Theses

The Timoshenko beam equation in terms of variable 'wB' is derived where 'wB’ is the deflection due to the bending of a beam. The equation is used to analyze an infinite beam loaded with (i) a concentrated transverse load and (ii) an impulse. It is also shown that the rotatory damping in the equation eliminates the increasing amplitude in the propagation of the bending moment when an impulse is applied to an infinite beam. Also the general procedure for the anlysis of a non-homogeneous equation is explained.

The Study Of Crisis Intervention Programs In Selected Community Mental Health Centers, Susan Van Cleve Jan 1979

The Study Of Crisis Intervention Programs In Selected Community Mental Health Centers, Susan Van Cleve

Theses

This culminating project by Susan Van Cleve (1979) examines the theoretical foundations and operational realities of crisis intervention programs within community mental health centers. The study begins by distinguishing between psychiatric emergencies and crisis states, utilizing the theoretical frameworks established by Lindemann and Caplan to define the phases of crisis and the principles of intervention. It outlines the essential elements of a comprehensive crisis service, which must include 24-hour telephone hotlines, face-to-face interventions (walk-in and outreach), emergency medical/psychiatric backup, and community linkage networks.

A significant portion of the paper is dedicated to a descriptive survey of 41 agencies in Illinois …

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand Jan 1979

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand

Theses

Marjorie L. Rand’s Theory and Practice of Integrated Psychotherapy explores a holistic approach to therapy that unifies the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Drawing from Gestalt therapy, Reichian therapy, movement therapy, breath awareness, and meditation, Rand presents a flexible and adaptive therapeutic model that prioritizes self-awareness and personal growth.

The thesis challenges the traditional medical and psychological models, which often treat the mind and body as separate entities. Instead, Rand argues for an integrative approach where energy flows freely, reducing psychological and physical distress. She discusses the role of energy healing, the chakra system, and bodywork as essential components of …

Readability Determination Using Superimposed Random Noise Patterns, Michael Dennison Jan 1979

Readability Determination Using Superimposed Random Noise Patterns, Michael Dennison

Theses

A readability gauge was constructed which objectively gauges the readability of printed matter. In the past such gauges have been produced using photographically created noise. In this study a gauge was constructed using noise generated by a computer. This gauge was evaluated and compared with a gauge produced using the photographic technique of noise generation. The computer generated gauge proved to be as good as the photographic gauge at detecting differences in legibility of printed type. It was also found that the only two causes of variability in the legibility samples used were letter size and letter contrast. Using only …

Modifications Of A Herrnfeld Sensitometer For Interimage Studies, Charles Tobin Jan 1979

Modifications Of A Herrnfeld Sensitometer For Interimage Studies, Charles Tobin

Theses

An available Herrnfeld Sensitometer has been rebuilt and modified to include a six position filter wheel, three narrow band interference filters, a separate D.C. power supply, and a central control panel. The modified sensitometer expedites the single layer exposure of color film. The system accomplishes this by using interference filters whose band-width peaks are matched to the peak spectral sensitivity of each emulsion layer to be exposed. A D.C. power supply has been included to eliminate lamp ripple caused by the oscillations that occur in the A.C. line. In depth experimentation (approximately 20 rolls of film) produced exposures closely approximating …

Evaluation Of Turbine Blade Root Damping, Curtis Beck Jan 1979

Evaluation Of Turbine Blade Root Damping, Curtis Beck

Theses

A test program has been conducted to measure the vibration damping of three designs of steam turbine blades. These blades were tested in their root attachments, sectioned from retired rotors. Blade loading was accomplished in a new type of blade damping test rig and damping was evaluated in the lowest tangential and axial blade modes. The test environment was room temperature air. The damping rig concept and development is presented in detail as well as results of an intensive test program. The blade designs are designated as Types A, B, and C, where Types A and B were of a …

Theories And Experiments For Determination Of Nonsteady Loads On Turbomachine Blades, James F. Crofoot Jan 1979

Theories And Experiments For Determination Of Nonsteady Loads On Turbomachine Blades, James F. Crofoot

Theses

This thesis collates the state of the art for flow induced excitation in a turbomachine stage under subsonic incompressible flow conditions. Theoretical developments are considered first, beginning with the vortex theories of Kemp and Sears, Henderson, Horlock and Holmes. Actuator disk analyses of Whitehead, Henderson and Horlock, and Horlock, Greitzer and Henderson are then considered followed by field theories of Osborne, Warner and Steele. Computer programs based on these theories are described and detailed input/output instructions are given. Results of these theories are compared and the state of the art for theoretical prediction of nonsteady blade loading is discussed. It …

Concur: A High-Level Language For Concurrent Programming, Karen Anderson Jan 1979

Concur: A High-Level Language For Concurrent Programming, Karen Anderson

Theses

A language CONCUR is defined which permits the definition and initiation of asynchronous processes. The language was inspired by Modula, a language proposed by Wirth for realtime programming. CONCUR removes Modula's restrictions on the placement of process declarations and invocations in order to study the implications of process support more fully- Most of the other sophisticated features of Modula, such as modules, structure types, and procedures, have also been removed to focus attention on processes and their particular requirements. A general methodology is suggested for concurrent programming, and several sample programs are presented which demonstrate concurrent programming with CONCUR. Finally, …

BASICS, the product of …

An Exploratory Examination Of Age, Attitudes Toward Death, Experience With Death, And The Christian Religion, Barbara L. Sanders Dec 1978

An Exploratory Examination Of Age, Attitudes Toward Death, Experience With Death, And The Christian Religion, Barbara L. Sanders

Theses

This exploratory study by Barbara L. Sanders investigates the complex relationships between age, personal experiences with death, attitudes toward mortality, and Christian religious beliefs. Motivated by personal and professional encounters with individuals across the lifespan, the author seeks to understand how these variables interrelate and challenge commonly held assumptions—such as the belief that Christians are more accepting of death or that children fear death more due to inexperience.

The research was conducted through a questionnaire distributed among 60 participants across three distinct age groups: adolescents (10–15), adults in their early middle years (36–49), and older adults (65+). The questionnaire assessed …

An Experimental Comparison Of Emulsions Of The Same Type Of Different Iodide Levels, Seilay Wong Dec 1978

An Experimental Comparison Of Emulsions Of The Same Type Of Different Iodide Levels, Seilay Wong

Theses

Single run neutral type iodobromide emulsions of 1, 5 and 10 mole % were made similarly. On development to 0.7 gamma with Kodak developers D23 and DK50, it was found that the 10% iodide emulsion had faster speed than the 1% iodide emulsion but yet its granularity was no greater than the 1% iodide emulsion. There is no evidence that the performance in D23 as compared to DK50 was improved with increasing iodide percentage.

Effect Of Concentration And Ph On Parametric Pumping Separations, Tsu-Kun S. Hsieh Oct 1978

Effect Of Concentration And Ph On Parametric Pumping Separations, Tsu-Kun S. Hsieh

Theses

The technique of parametric pumping represents a new and valuable development in the separation science of proteins. Many conventional protein separation are often processed batchwise. However, parametric pumping offers the possibility of continuous processing; the continuous process provides both the advantages of decreasing the processing time and of minimizing degradation.

Preliminary step testing experiments were conducted to study the equilibrium of protein between the stationary and mobile phase of the sephadex ion exchanger.

It was the purpose of this research to study the feasibility of operating a semi-continuous parametric pump with a sephadex ion exchanger for the separation of a …

The Measurement Of Depolarized Radiation For Monitoring The Mass Concentration Of Particulates, Bruce E. Wilson

Theses

The depolarization of backscattered polarized incident radiation which is expressed as a depolarization ratio was investigated as a means of monitoring the mass concentration of particles in stacks from coal-fired burners. This involved the design of an instrument that would detect small levels of radiation. Two methods were investigated. The first utilized a Gallium Arsenide laser and a silicon detector diode; the second was composed of a xenon flash lamp and a photomultiplier detector tube.

The relationship between the depolarization ratio and the mass concentration of diamond particles in the 0.01 gm/m3 to 0.5 gm/m3 was determined. Diamond …
