Forced Plasma Oxidation Of Reactively Evaporated Indium As A Transparent Antistatic Coating For Ponyethylene Terephthalate, David Dawson Elli Aug 1986

Forced Plasma Oxidation Of Reactively Evaporated Indium As A Transparent Antistatic Coating For Ponyethylene Terephthalate, David Dawson Elli

Theses

Thin films of indium oxide (IO) were prepared by a three stage process involving forced plasma oxidation (FPO) of reactively evaporated indium. Applications of IO films produced using this technique include transparent, antistatic coatings for the continuous processing of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The films were characterized by sheet resistance and optical transmittance measurements, and ESCA. Experiments were performed to determine the effect of FPO exposure time on sheet resistance Rs and optical transmittance T, which were then monitored over a one year period to determine the stability of the films. A model is developed to explain the effects of (i) …

Structuralism, Charles N. Smith Aug 1986

Structuralism, Charles N. Smith

Theses

Structuralism is an interdisciplinary form of modern painting that suggests the illusion of movement and growth through the conscious manipulation of flat colors and abstract geometric forms. The practice of Structuralism involves more than a grasp of the craft of painting. The artist is required to understand and practice the laws of proportion as founded by the early Egyptians and Greeks. He must have an understanding of modern color theory and he must master and practice the laws of visual perception as stated by the Gestalt psychologist, David Katz.

I have tried to recreate the chronological development of Structuralism by …

A Study Of The Xerox Xns Filing Protocol As Implemented On Several Heterogenous Systems, Edward Flint Aug 1986

A Study Of The Xerox Xns Filing Protocol As Implemented On Several Heterogenous Systems, Edward Flint

Theses

The Xerox Network System is composed of heterogeneous processors connected across a variety of transmission media A series of protocols is defined to describe the communication mechanisms between system elements. One of these protocols, the Filing Protocol, defines a general purpose file management system. Current implementations of the protocol, although derived from the Xerox specification, fall short of providing the interconnectivity between elements desired in a heterogeneous network system. The definition of an easily implemented protocol subset that provides the common file system functions of retrieval, storage, enumeration/location and deletion is derived from experiences with several implementations. This definition and …

Linkage Kinematics Sketchpad, Michael St. Jacques Jul 1986

Linkage Kinematics Sketchpad, Michael St. Jacques

Theses

During the design and creation of linkage-type mechanisms, visualization of linkage motion is extremely important. However, there does not appear to be a commercially available computer package for accomplishing visualization interactively. Most linkage design packages allow animation of linkage motion only after tedious part description (and debug) using cryptic input codes. The main thrust of this work has been the development of a prototype interactive graphics (CAD) system aimed at visualizing the motion and mobility of linkage-type mechanisms. The program is called the Linkage Kinematics Sketchpad (LKSP). It is a 2-D color graphics program which allows the user to describe …

Investigation Of The Control Information Content In The Transient Regime Input/Output Data, Matthew Strack Jul 1986

Investigation Of The Control Information Content In The Transient Regime Input/Output Data, Matthew Strack

Theses

This report represents an analysis of the determination of the information content in a selected pair of system data points from the input/output of the plant. The given system contains a random variation condition which leads to the introduction of an adaptive control loop. A procedure for adaptive control is proposed, based upon the information content in the selected pair, for implementation in a microcomputer-based system. The determination of the selected pair as well as the adaptive control laws are based upon extensive computer simulation of the system. This computer-design technique aids in the development of "switching" conditions for the …

A Theoretical Study Of Pure And Simple Competition Between Two Microbial Species In Configurations Of Two Interconnected Chemostat, Cheng-Ming Kung Jun 1986

A Theoretical Study Of Pure And Simple Competition Between Two Microbial Species In Configurations Of Two Interconnected Chemostat, Cheng-Ming Kung

Theses

It is known that two microbial populations competing purely and simply for a common substrate cannot coexist in a steady state in an environment which is spatially homogeneous. Hence they cannot coexist in a chemostat something which implies that a mixed culture of two pure and simple competitors cannot be maintained in a single ideal reactor in a steady state. The present study investigates theoretically pure and simple competition between two populations in two interconnected chemostats. Three reactor configurations are considered and analyzed. It is proved that two pure and simple competitors can coexist in a steady state in both …

Cmos Analog Transmission Gate Design, Cynthia S. Bell Jun 1986

Cmos Analog Transmission Gate Design, Cynthia S. Bell

Theses

CMOS technology has provided an integrated circuit equivalent for the conventional electromechanical switch: the transmission gate. CMOS analog transmission gates degrade signals passed through them with noise due to gate clock feedthrough transients. A SPICE parameter model for the Eastman Kodak CMOS process has been developed and timing requirements for feedthrough cancellation in typically structured transmission gate devices have been studied. An alternate device structure for improved performance is proposed.

Substructuring Analysis For Impact Dynamics Using Ansys Finite Element Package, Chang Ho Cho May 1986

Substructuring Analysis For Impact Dynamics Using Ansys Finite Element Package, Chang Ho Cho

Theses

This thesis is intended to serve as an introductory guide to ANSYS finite element package for the analysis of impact dynamics. Substructuring technique has been used to reduce the degrees of freedom.

Finite element method is essentially a numerical technique to calculate elastic deformations. However, by introducing some techniques like gap element, the technique can be easily extended to rigid body dynamic analysis. To solve the equation of motion both for rigid body and elastic deformations, direct integration technique is used in this thesis, i.e., Houbolt method.

ANSYS is a large scale general purpose computer program for finite element analysis. …

The Dielectric Slab-Wedge Antenna, B. Keith Christensen May 1986

The Dielectric Slab-Wedge Antenna, B. Keith Christensen

Theses

A theoretical model and numerical investigation of the directive gain of a dielectric slab-wedge radiator is presented. The model is based on a union of the classical dielectric slab equations, local mode theory, and equivalent current distribution treatments of the truncated dielectric slab and wedge geometries.

The far field is developed from the sum of two current distributions. The slab region, up to the transition plane between slab and wedge, is replaced by equivalent electric and magnetic surface current densities. The wedge contribution is developed from a volume polarization current distribution.

Conservation of power is used to approximate the field …

The effects of i. post-extraction time and ii. dentin depth on bond-strengths were tested using two monomers: o-methoxyphenol/ TDI/HEMA/pentaerythritol and p-cresol/TDI/HEMA/pentaerythritol 1. From teeth recently extracted (2h) vs dentin aged from one to six months 2. From dentin cut from three different levels within the tooth.

The prepared dentin-adhesive samples were stored in …

Effects Of Physical Exertion And Caffeine Ingestion On Mental Performance, Alireza Shafiei May 1986

Effects Of Physical Exertion And Caffeine Ingestion On Mental Performance, Alireza Shafiei

Theses

Stresses in man-machine systems can be broadly classified as (1) physical and (2) mental. Both types of stresses generate some kind of response in the human body. These responses could be physiological (quantitative) or behavioral (qualitative). While the physical stresses mostly create physiological changes, mental stresses may cause physiological and/or behavioral changes. The purpose of this study is to investigate such influences, and try to determine if stimulants such as coffee have any effect on people's ability to perform tasks involving a combination of physical and mental elements.

An attempt has been made to describe an interrelationship between physical exertion …

Ray And Beam Representation Of The Glancing Phenomena, Michael Sotiriou Vogas May 1986

Ray And Beam Representation Of The Glancing Phenomena, Michael Sotiriou Vogas

Theses

Asymptotic ray theory (ART) is a widely used method dealing with problems of wave propagation in an inhomogeneous medium. The main deficiency of ART is in transition regions where rays near caustics, glancing and critical incidence fail to represent the actual wave field. Ray bundles in such transition regions have been successfully replaced with modal bundles and remainders El] in well defined profiles. However , in practical problems it is difficult to implement modal representations and almost impossible to express remainders. Recently emerging Gaussian beam method (GBM) has shown promising results in representing the total field produced by a source …
