Development Of A Quantitative Spectrophotometric Assay For Lectins, Kim E. Goppert
Development Of A Quantitative Spectrophotometric Assay For Lectins, Kim E. Goppert
Theses
A new quantitative spectrophotometric assay for lectins has been developed. It involves mixing a copolymer with a lectin solution and measuring the absorbance change as a function of time as the resulting solution becomes turbid. The slope obtained could be correlated quantitatively with the amount of lectin present. The assay has sensitivity problems at low lectin concentrations and also a reproducibility problem. More study is required in these two areas.

Trends Toward World Citizenship In The Contemporary World, Mickey Weltman
Trends Toward World Citizenship In The Contemporary World, Mickey Weltman
Theses
This paper, "Trends Toward World Citizenship in the Contemporary World," by Mickey Weltman, explores the evolving concept of world citizenship, defined as both a mindset recognizing global interdependence and a practical framework for international cooperation. The study is grounded in the context of increasing global interconnectedness due to advances in technology, communication, economics, and transnational challenges such as environmental degradation and nuclear threats.
Weltman examines three key trends contributing to the development of global citizenship: religious and idealistic traditions promoting the brotherhood of humanity, the role of international organizations such as the United Nations, and the influence of multinational corporations …

The Role Of Art In The Expression Of Individual And Family Dynamics Related To "Anorexia Nervosa", John Joseph Collins
The Role Of Art In The Expression Of Individual And Family Dynamics Related To "Anorexia Nervosa", John Joseph Collins
Theses
Art can be a powerful experience. In this project , the artwork of a client diagnosed as having "anorexia nervosa" is explored in terms of how her art expresses her personal conflicts and family dynamics. Due to the particular quality of the family system of which the anorexic is a part, it is extremely important to involve the family in the treatment plan. For this reason, the emphasis on the whole family , or more specifically, the way they relate with one another, is one prime focus in t he discussion of the client 's artwork in this study. Although …

Personality And Mysticism: An Experimental Design, Deborah Marie Ellison-Rogers
Personality And Mysticism: An Experimental Design, Deborah Marie Ellison-Rogers
Theses
This research investigates the relationship between personality as measured by the Singer-Loomis Inventory of Personality and the quantity of mystical experiences as measured by the Mysticism Scale. A review of the literature shows that introverts have more awareness of the archetypes and the archetypes often appear in mystical experiences. Awareness of mystical experiences is precisely what the Mysticism Scale measures.
The results were largely insignificant . However, there was a definite skew toward introversion in samples for both the pilot project and the research project . It is felt that this skew is a function of the choice of populations …

A Determination Of Management Philosophy Based On An Optimistic Assumption Of Man's Nature, Melvin Lester
Theses
Management theory contains varying prescriptions for increasing managerial effectiveness in the work environment. This study attempts to develop an effective managerial philosophy, consistent with an optimistic assumption of human nature with a focus on the development of the good, capable, and responsible man. Consideration is given to theories of human nature, individual belief systems, the values of American society, the military organization, and current management theory and practice.

The Hypoxia Screen As An Indicator Of Alterations In The Number Of Centeral Cholinergic Recpetors Inuduced By Chronic Acetylcholinestrerase Inhibition, Kathleen B. Wallace
Theses
Chronic administration of diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP) at 72 hour intervals for a total of 14 doses resulted in a reduction in the number of central muscarinic receptors in mice as measured by the specific binding of [3H]Quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB) to cortical tis sue homogenates (pmole/mg protein). The number of cholinergic receptors were reduced significantly by 12% in DFP treated animals (0.687 + 0.018 pmoles/mg) as compared to vehicle treated controls (0.781 +0.016 pmoles/ mg) after the sixth dose of DFP (Day 17). The decrease in the number of central cholinergic receptors was maximal after the 8th dose of DFP (Day …

An Experimental Study Of Comparison Between Ph-Parametric Pumping And Ph-Cycling Zone Adsorption Process On Protein Separation, Vincent P. Jajalla
An Experimental Study Of Comparison Between Ph-Parametric Pumping And Ph-Cycling Zone Adsorption Process On Protein Separation, Vincent P. Jajalla
Theses
In this thesis, an experimental investigation was conducted to compare the performance of the continuous pH-parametric pumping and the pH-cycling zone adsorption process on protein separation.
The model system studied was hemoglobin-water. on CM-Sepharose CL-6B (cation) exchanger in a single-column system. Various modes of operation were tried on both the pH-parametric pumping and the pH-cycling zone adsorption method. The separation factors for each mode of operation were computed and compared.
It is shown that the continuous pH-parametric pumping, with circulation to insure the pH uniformity inside the column, has the better separation factor than the pH-cycling zone adsorption method.

Focusing On The Black Family, Eunice Spratt
Focusing On The Black Family, Eunice Spratt
Theses
"Focusing on the Black Family" by Eunice Spratt is an interdisciplinary teaching guide designed for fourth-grade students, emphasizing both average and below-average learners. Developed in the summer of 1981, this curriculum aims to foster an understanding of the family as a social unit, with a particular focus on the strengths and dynamics of the Black American family. Spratt's approach integrates sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, history, and political science to help students explore the concept of family across various cultures and time periods.
The curriculum is divided into four units: the general structure and function of families, how families interact with …

The Microdensitometry Of Image Boundaries Fabricated By The Color-Difference Blue-Screen Traveling Matte Process, Michael F. Lehman
The Microdensitometry Of Image Boundaries Fabricated By The Color-Difference Blue-Screen Traveling Matte Process, Michael F. Lehman
Theses
The Color-Difference Blue-Screen Traveling Matte Process is a technique used in motion picture special effects production to composite two or more scenes into one. A complaint often made against the process is that boundaries between the composited images are often 'harder,’ i.e., there is a sharper transition between the image and their surround. Because this is visible, it is objectionable. An attempt at duplicating the process, so the boundaries could be analyzed using microdensitometry was made. Failure at key steps in the process rendered results inconclusive, but raised several interesting questions of the process. Also, a simple technique was fabricated …

Qualities Of Uncoated Groundwood Paper Affecting Adhesive Binding Strength, Kenneth S. Gross
Qualities Of Uncoated Groundwood Paper Affecting Adhesive Binding Strength, Kenneth S. Gross
Theses
This investigation has examined the adhesive binding of paper, with particular attention to the action of the fiber/adhesive interface. The efforts of this research were concentrated on relating properties of the paper to strength of the resultant binding. To simulate the problems of economical binding styles, uncoated groundwood paper and hot melt adhesives were studied. Although the hypotheses assumed that a strong interfiber bond within the sheets would lead to a strong binding, it was found that the most critical factor was not the strength of the sheet, but the availability of the fibers to the adhesive. The strength of …

Art Therapy As A Means Of Ego Enhancement For Severely And Profoundly Mentally Retardedk, Kimberly Riemer
Art Therapy As A Means Of Ego Enhancement For Severely And Profoundly Mentally Retardedk, Kimberly Riemer
Theses
Kimberly Riemer’s thesis, Art Therapy as a Means of Ego Enhancement for the Severely and Profoundly Mentally Retarded (1981), explores the impact of art therapy on individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. The study was conducted as part of a six-month practicum, during which Riemer worked with both children and adults in a specialized educational and vocational setting.
Drawing from psychological theories, particularly those of Erik Erikson, Riemer argues that ego development is crucial for mentally retarded individuals. She hypothesizes that if art therapy can aid emotionally disturbed individuals, it should also benefit those with cognitive impairments. Through structured …

The Effects Of Training Parents In Divergent Questioning On The Creativity Of The Pre-School Child, Judith E. Brown
The Effects Of Training Parents In Divergent Questioning On The Creativity Of The Pre-School Child, Judith E. Brown
Theses
This study was designed to investigate whether teaching mothers to ask divergent questions would have a direct effect on their four year old child 's creativity. It was hypothesized that children whose mothers received the training in divergent questioning techniques would do better on a test of creativity than children whose mothers, did not receive the training.
Twenty mother and child groups were included in the study. The twenty were divided randomly into two groups, ten groups to receive the treatment and ten to receive no treatment. Six treatment sheets were then administered in the homes to the experimental group …
The Theoretical Foundations Of Psycho-Diagnostics: A Comparison Of Dynamic Psychiatry And Ego Developmental Psychiatry, Marian Rice
Theses
Marian Rice's thesis compares two models of psychiatry: dynamic and ego developmental. The dynamic model, rooted in classical psychoanalytic theory, focuses on resolving the Oedipal conflict. The ego developmental model emphasizes object relations theory and resolving the rapprochement crisis. The thesis explores the history of psychoanalytic theory, highlighting the evolution of Freud's ideas and the contributions of other theorists like Reich, A. Freud, and Hartmann. Object relations theory, a key aspect of ego developmental psychology, is discussed in detail, examining the works of Klein, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Balint, and Mahler. The thesis concludes by summarizing both models and emphasizing the importance …
