Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky May 1983

Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky

Theses

I intend to explore the importance of object and image as symbols that visually express emotion. I am interested in the human condition and the influences and impressions that cause us to see things the way we do. Through the transformation of feelings and forms, I hope to relate emotional responses to situations we find ourselves in. I plan to use holloware techniques within a sculptural format, possibly combined with clay and other materials to achieve these images.

Natural Shelters, Habitable Landscapes, Joseph Vitone May 1983

Natural Shelters, Habitable Landscapes, Joseph Vitone

Theses

The purpose of this thesis will be to try to share with you an energy and character that I find in trees, in the earth, in the qualities of light, in the intimacy of houses and yards. There is a simple yet deep-running link between our created spaces (our homes) and the spirit and body of the woods. I feel a strong kinship between myself and the land that produced me- -a super-blood tie, a joining from long ago--that transcends anthropocentric thought and concern. I want to know that link, to be at ease with the earth and to extend …

Sounds In Clay: A Study Of Vibrating Ceramic Sculpture, Ward Hartenstein

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to derive a synthesis of the sculptural aspects of form and structure and the physical principles of musical acoustics. vibrating systems: Specifically I wish to deal with three types of free-end vibrating bars; fixed-end vibrating bars; and three-dimensional vibrating bodies, each of which possesses a unique set of technical constraints within which the aesthetic requirements of form and structure may be addressed. My objective is to conduct research leading to the design and construction of a group of objects which, through the involvement and participation of the viewer, communicate both a visual and an …

A Taxonomical Study Of Literary Criticism, Joanne M. Shroba-Wehner Jan 1983

A Taxonomical Study Of Literary Criticism, Joanne M. Shroba-Wehner

Theses

This paper explores the foundational influence of Plato and Aristotle on the development of literary criticism, tracing how their contrasting philosophies have shaped Western literary theory through successive historical periods. Plato’s skepticism toward mimetic art and his emphasis on divine inspiration set the stage for a long tradition of Platonic influence, later adapted by thinkers such as Sir Philip Sidney, Wordsworth, and Shelley. These Neoplatonists reinterpret Plato’s ideas, often granting greater value to poetic imagination and emotional resonance.

In contrast, Aristotle’s systematic approach to poetics—centered on imitation, catharsis, and structured drama—formed the bedrock for classical and neoclassical criticism. His ideas …

Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart Jan 1983

Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart

Theses

The Quality Control Circle attempts to solve management and production problems using a participative management style. This study represents an analysis of how the Quality Control Circle emerged in Japan and efforts in the U. S. to Americanize the concept. It is important to note that participative management represents a single management style. This style is not recommended for every organization. Organizations must select the appropriate management style to accomplish conceived goals and the style must fit within their particular corporate culture. The Quality Control Circle is an outgrowth of participative management and is not-all inclusive of participative management ideals.

Parsing Natural Language, Leonard E. Wilcox Jan 1983

Parsing Natural Language, Leonard E. Wilcox

Theses

People have long been intrigued by the possibility of using a computer to "understand" natural language. Most researchers attempting to solve this problem have begun their efforts by trying to have the computer recognize the underlying syntactic form (the parse tree) of the sentence. This thesis presents an overview of the history of syntactic parsing of natural language, and it compares the major methods that have been used. Linguistically, two recent grammars are described: transformational grammar and systemic grammar. Computationally, three parsing strategies are described and compared: top-down parsing, bottom-up parsing, and a combination of both of these methods. Several …

Commemorative Pottery, Jo Brenner Jan 1983

Commemorative Pottery, Jo Brenner

Theses

The clay forms for my thesis commemorate personal experiences, dreams, memories, and fantasies. I view my work as capturing a moment of something familiar; a reminder of ordinary events that might have gone unnoticed. The unity of imagery, surface and form is the major investigation for my thesis. Drawing from autobiographical themes and searching for an equilibrium between figure and vessel are the criteria from which I work. I also explore the process of transfor mation of my images from two dimensional figures to their full three dimensional expression.

Bedouin Textiles Of Saudi Arabia, Celia Wright May 1982

Bedouin Textiles Of Saudi Arabia, Celia Wright

Theses

During the past year I have had the opportunity of working closely with a collection of Saudi Arabian woven textiles and other crafts. These textiles are characterized by the combination of a great variety of techniques, indicating a diffusion of techniques between the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent cultures. The frequent combination of both warp-faced and weft-faced structures within a single woven piece is particularly fascinating, as it rarely occurs in other cultures. This thesis will research the techniques and designs used in Saudi weaving and in the weaving of adjacent and related cultures in Africa and the Middle East which …

The Printing Industry In Sub-Sahara Africa: An Exploratory Study, H. Richard Harmsen

The printing industry in Sub-Sahara Africa faces numerous problems inhibiting further growth and development. Because of a scarcity of published information regarding these problems, and regarding the nature of the industry in general, this study hoped to establish a beginning and baseline for researchers, printing managers, suppliers, development planners, and anyone else interested in the development of the African printing industry. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to identify: 1) the general characteristics of the printing industry in Sub-Sahara Africa; and 2) the primary constraints inhibiting its further growth and development. Information was gathered by several means, including a …
