The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau May 1987

The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau

Theses

When I first thought about my thesis topic at the end of last year, I had a very different concept from what eventually developed into this project. My original intention, that of using the computer as an educational tool in the ethical and social development of primary school children, has remained the same. The changes occurred in my methods of achieving this intention. My rationale for promoting the computer as an educational resource is manifold. For example, the world that these children will be entering as adults will be entirely computerized and automated. This next generation must have more than …

Computer Imagery And Creative Energy, Linda K. Saxton May 1987

Computer Imagery And Creative Energy, Linda K. Saxton

Theses

During the creative process energy becomes manifest through some form, be it nature, people, thought, or object. Individuals can expreience and absorb this energy directly through awareness of the subtle energy body and by developing its inner technology or system of energy centers and channels for the purpose of revitalizing body and mind and for transforming consciousness. It was my intent in this thesis to develop a videotape that would extend knowledge about, provide an experience of, and be an expression of creativity as the flow and manifestation of higher creative energy, higher referring to levels of refinement, the highest …

A Performance Comparison Between A Wide-Hinged Endpaper Construction And The Library Binding Institute Standard Endpaper Construction, Claudia Chaback

Theses

For the last fifty years , library binders have employed a standard endpaper construction for all of its bindings. Now, because of new binding techniques and the deterioration of paper some preservationists have placed a demand on library binders to develop an alternate endpaper construction. The purpose of this study was to determine the hinge strength and openability performance of the two most conmon library binding techniques, oversewing and Singer side sewing, which were flat backed and rounded/backed in relation to the currently used the LBI Standard endpaper as compared to the wide-hinged endpaper construction. It was questioned if there …

Mosaic In Paper, Caroline M. Howell May 1987

Mosaic In Paper, Caroline M. Howell

Theses

"Mosaic In Paper" is a synthesis of lithographs, photo etchings, and woodcuts designed on the Macintosh Plus computer then transferred to these processes through Xerox copies or laser print-offs. The concept of the piece stems from the Byzantine mosaics and Gothic rose windows I saw in Europe while living and studying in Italy four years ago, as well as a brief study of Oriental rugs while designing the work. The piece is intended to show harmony between the technology of today and the tradition of these ancient art mediums.

A Study Of The Brain's Transfer Function For Edge Perception, Charles G. Fink Apr 1987

A Study Of The Brain's Transfer Function For Edge Perception, Charles G. Fink

Theses

A concept was developed and a computer program was designed and implemented to model the eye, the brain, and the perception system. These models were used to study edge transformation through the human visual system. The eye model was developed using optical spread and neural sampling data along with different inhibition distributions. The effects of lateral inhibition on retinal edge response were studied and hypothetical brain transfer functions were calculated. The results of this study indicate that no single mechanism or linear model can explain both the sinewave response and edge perception for the human visual system. The eye and …

Chekhov And Friends: The Director's Role In A Work-In-Progress, Matthew S. Schliesman

Theses

This MFA thesis by Matthew S. Schliesman, titled “Chekhov and Friends: The Director’s Role in a Work-in-Progress,” documents a creative reinterpretation of Anton Chekhov’s one-act plays The Bear and The Proposal through the lens of 20th-century television variety entertainment. Inspired by The Carol Burnett Show, Schliesman constructs a fictional Russian vaudeville performer—Karoltina Burnetskaya—whose variety show provides a narrative framework for the two Chekhov plays and additional material, including a musical number and an improvised short story adaptation. Set in 1906 Russia during a time of political unrest, the show blends period elements with modern theatrical conventions and humor, aiming …

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper Jan 1987

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of business ethics and the impact gender has upon the ethical decisions of corporate middle management .

Research has attributed the lack of ethics in businessmen to a decline in moral standards . Because this condition seems to be the rule rather than the exception, it becomes necessary to focus more clearly on the corporate system and the moral development of the individuals who make up this system.

Over the years moral development has been the subject of controversy as many theorists have developed their own ideas as to why people behave morally. …

Theses

The study provides the application of the DRAM software for the dynamic analysis of a linkage mechanism and presents a simplified version of the DRAM user manual. This user manual appears in appendix C. The linkage which is used for the dynamic analysis consists of three rigid couplers. Crank 2 of this mechanism is responsible for transferring motion to the other links. Kinematic and kinetic results by DRAM are compared with analytical results. Good agreement was observed. Since the DRAM user guide is not easy to understand, it was necessary to write a user-friendly guide. Several types of kinematic and …

Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Digoxin, Susan K. Alexandrovich Jan 1987

Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Digoxin, Susan K. Alexandrovich

Theses

Five antibodies directed against digoxin were grown and characterized. Two separation techniques were tested to find the better method of separating bound the free fractions of ligand after competitive reactions with the antibodies. Charcoal separation was chosen. The antibodies were analyzed for affinity constant by the Scatchard Analysis. Cross reactivity data for two of the antibodies were collected. Four of the antibodies have satisfactory affinity constants for use in a digoxin assay. Cross reactivity studies showed varying amounts of cross reactivity with digoxin metabolites, but none with the steroids and lipid tested.

Implementing Intersection Calculations Of The Ray Tracing Algorithm With Systolic Arrays, Andrea Stankus Jan 1987

Implementing Intersection Calculations Of The Ray Tracing Algorithm With Systolic Arrays, Andrea Stankus

Theses

Ray tracing is one technique that has been used to synthesize realistic images with a computer. Unfortunately, this technique, when implemented in software, is slow and expensive. The trend in computer graphics has been toward the use of special purpose hardware, to speed up the calculations, and, hence, the generation of the synthesized image. This paper describes the design and the operation of a systolic based architecture, tailored to speed up the intersection calculations, that must be performed as a part of the ray tracing algorithm.

Display Of Molecular Models With Interactive Computer Graphics, Steve Wuter Yang Jan 1987

Display Of Molecular Models With Interactive Computer Graphics, Steve Wuter Yang

Theses

Computer graphics devices offer a way to present images of three-dimensional objects with enough detail to aid human understanding of the structure of molecules. In this thesis, the Computer Aided Molecular Design system (CAMD system) will illustrate this idea. The CAMD system is an educational package designed for students in high school. The user of the CAMD system can create different molecules and store these molecules into a relational data base for future display. A Relational Data Base Management system was implicitly implemented for the CAMD system.

Uguru: A Natural Language Unix Consultant, John Hanson Jan 1987

Uguru: A Natural Language Unix Consultant, John Hanson

Theses

UGURU is a natural language conversation program, implemented in Prolog, which can manage a wide knowledge base of facts about Unix. The range and wording of questions that it understands are based on surveys taken of students, mostly Unix beginners. UGURU is also designed to accept statements in English that can be added as facts to the knowledge base. Each fact is represented as a "binding set:" a verb-oriented semantic net with the characteristics of directed acyclic graphs. The main actions taken by UGURU are divided between two primary modules, a parser and a retriever. To produce a binding set …

Animator: An Object-Oriented Approach, Stephen Kurtz Jan 1987

Animator: An Object-Oriented Approach, Stephen Kurtz

Theses

Object-oriented programming is presented as a paradigm for developing interactive systems for computer animation. Object types, evolved conceptually from graphics turtles, are implemented to provide the animator with familiar metaphors for the specification of motion in three-dimensional space. The intention is to create objects that can represent actors, cameras, and decor that the user can direct and animate in a relatively intuitive manner. Vector and turtle objects support the actors, which respond to messages to orient, accelerate and draw themselves on the screen. The MacApp object libraries are used to implement the standard Macintosh user interface and a unit is …

Culture In Vivid Color: The Villa Montezuma Windows, Marit Velma Zinko Jan 1987

Culture In Vivid Color: The Villa Montezuma Windows, Marit Velma Zinko

Theses

For a full century the cultural significance of the large stained glass windows at the Villa Montezuma has been misunderstood. Now, with all the expense, effort, and energy expended to restore this beautiful historical house, it is both appropriate and timely to take a closer look at this legacy so that it can be fully appreciated and enjoyed by future generations. To properly understand these windows it is necessary to first take a brief but close look at Jesse Shepard, to understand what kind of man he was in 1887 when he came to San Diego; next to take a …

High Temperature Reactions Of 1,2-Dichloroethane With Water Vapor In A Tubular Reactor, Charles E. Anderson Dec 1986

High Temperature Reactions Of 1,2-Dichloroethane With Water Vapor In A Tubular Reactor, Charles E. Anderson

Theses

This study examines the reaction of l,2-dichloroethane with water vapor. The linear-flow method is utilized, assuming plug flow without axial diffusion. Normal operation is at atmospheric pressure and the reactor is a quartz tube in a thermal region 45 cm in length. Two reactor diameters of 0.4 cm and l.05 cm are used. Water and l,2-dichloroethane enter the system in liquid phase via syringe pumps. After vaporizing in heated tubing, they are combined with argon, the reactor carrier gas. The molar ratio of water to l,2-dichloroethane is 55:l and varied residence times are achieved by changing the argon flowrate. Reactor …
