Discounting Undivided Minority Interests, John J. Schlueter Iii Jan 1989

Discounting Undivided Minority Interests, John J. Schlueter Iii

Theses

The thesis explores how real estate ownership, when held as undivided minority interests (i.e., shared ownership where individual shares are not physically divided), leads to valuation challenges. Schlueter argues that such interests are typically worth less than a simple proportional share of the full property’s value due to factors like lack of control, marketability issues, and limited access to financing. He supports his case with legal definitions, historical context, valuation theory, interviews with real estate professionals, and analysis of real market data—including discounted sales of partial interests. Ultimately, the thesis concludes that discounting is necessary to reflect the real-world limitations …

Theses

There are many components involved in creating healthy marriages. This search examined one of these components: Establishing functional priorities within marriage. Therefore, this research was a study of the priorities in marriage, priorities which will provide moral direction, a certain amount of structure, and a balanced approach to handling activities and relationships.

These priorities were, in order of importance: (a) Moral or spiritual values; (b) the dyadic (husband-wife) relationship; (c) the triadic (husband-wife/child) relationship; and (d) occupation. It was the thesis of this study that these priorities offered most to a marriage unit when maintained in the order prescribed here. …

Modern Black Psychological Theories Versus European Methodology And How They Relate To Corporate Savvy, Lynda Williams Smith Jan 1989

Modern Black Psychological Theories Versus European Methodology And How They Relate To Corporate Savvy, Lynda Williams Smith

Theses

There has been extensive research done on Black Theoretical Constructs versus European Constructs. It is the intent of this project to provide its readers with an insight into the problems that exist with racist and oppressive theories and their applications and methodologies (past and present); I will also explore the "Afrocentric Model" (a black frame of reference), and how that model of Black personality theories can be developed to "deal with" White corporate situations.

Racism and oppression are two critical problems of our time for which some have theories, but no one has an answer. Every man, in a sense, …

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held Jan 1989

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held

Theses

The premise upon which this study is based is that German Expressionist art has undergone an expansion in marketability, and aesthetic recognition during the past decade. German Expressionism is defined as an art of protest, an art that expressed its fundamental precepts visually through distortion, brutal images, and the emotive use of color and form.

I chose to use Ludwig Meidner to exemplify the characteristics of the movement. The basic tenets of Expressionism are apparent in both Meidner's visual and literary endeavors. Ten years ago, this artist's name and work were obscure. Today, his art appears in galleries, his name …

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas Jan 1989

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas

Theses

Food can be preserved by irradiation which is the exposure of food to ionising radiation, high energy electron from electron beams or X-rays or gamma rays from Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137 radioisotopes. Irradiation does not leave a residue in the food and it does not make it radioactive. The low level energy levels of Cobalt and Cesium isotopic gamma rays does not induce any radioactivity. Irradiation has the same preservative effect on food as heat treatment, but because irradiation does not appreciably raise the temperature of the food, it is known as 'cold sterilization'.

Irradiation can potentially be used to preserve …

Intelligent Knowledge Acquisition System, Bong-Soo Youn Jan 1989

Intelligent Knowledge Acquisition System, Bong-Soo Youn

Theses

IKAS (Intelligent Knowledge Acquisition System) is an expert system building shell with a machine-assisted concept checker for easy integrated rule-entry. Unlike most expert system shells currently available, IKAS not only performs rule syntax checking, but also maintains semantic integration of the knowledge base by using a Concept Base. The Concept Base is incrementally grown during the cycle of expert system application development and safeguards the whole domain from conceptually conflicting rules by finding possible inconsistencies or duplications of concepts and giving recommendations for possible solutions. Also automatic generalized concept forming using the Inductive Extension Generalization method gives IKAS a capability …

A Statistical Approach To Formant Tracking, Robert T. Gayvert Jan 1989

A Statistical Approach To Formant Tracking, Robert T. Gayvert

Theses

This thesis investigates a statistical approach to tracking formant trajectories in continuous speech. In this approach a probability measure is applied to a set of features extracted from each analysis frame of the speech signal, and a conditional mean estimate is used to determine formant frequency values. The features used can be vector quantization symbols, spectrum levels, or other sets of features related to formant frequencies. Continuity constraints can be applied via either simple smoothing algorithms or hidden Markov models. An example of this technique using a multivariate probability measure on LPC spectral values is examined in detail. A second …

Co-Metabolism Of Pentachlorophenol With Glucose Using Two-Stage Anaerobic Activated Carbon Fluidized Beds, Zen Wang

Theses

Abstract - Detoxification of pentachlorophenol by using a two-stage anaerobic biological activated carbon fluidized bed has been investigated. Glucose was introduced as a cosubstrate to determine the relationship between the glucose/PCP ratio and the extent of PCP detoxification in such a system. This system has been proved to be effective in the removal of both PCP and COD. Ratio of glucose to PCP predominates the performance of the system throughout the whole course of this experiment. At a glucose/PCP ratio of 0.33, the system has a highest reduction of both PCP and COD. Addition of glucose to the highly PCP …

Spine Preparation: Factors Affecting Optimum Linkage Of Paper And Adhesive In Adhesive Bookbinding, Richard Adams Nov 1988

Spine Preparation: Factors Affecting Optimum Linkage Of Paper And Adhesive In Adhesive Bookbinding, Richard Adams

Theses

Adhesive bookbinding, a method of holding trimmed pages together in a book using hotmelt glue, offers rapid binding and curing time, but has the disadvantage of poor glue penetration into the paper edges. A weak binding will result unless good linkage can be made between paper and glue, which is the objective of spine-roughening treatments. Eight spine-roughening treatments from three manufacturers were compared on an uncoated and a coated paper stock, against a control treatment of trimmed paper. Treatments were studied by light- and scanning electron microscopic examination of paper edges and by measurement of the mean page-pull values based …

A Study On The Relationship Of The Moisture Content Of Paper And The Setoff Rate Of Drying Oil Lithographic Ink And Its Application To Thermographic Printing, Daniel Gibbons Sep 1988

A Study On The Relationship Of The Moisture Content Of Paper And The Setoff Rate Of Drying Oil Lithographic Ink And Its Application To Thermographic Printing, Daniel Gibbons

Theses

The focus of this study was to determine the specific moisture content of several different papers that were exposed to four different relative humidity environments at approximately 30 degrees centigrade. This was done in order to see if the amount of water present in a sheet of paper affects the drying rate of drying oil inks. This in turn was done so that we would be able to determine if the rate at which this ink dries and its corresponding increase in viscosity affected the tack or "stickiness" which is vital to thermographic printing applications. The addition of moisture to …

An Intelligent Computerized Pulse-Duplicator For The In-Vitro Evaluation Of Prosthetic Heart Valves, John F. Andrews

Theses

A computerized data acquisition system is presented for the in-vitro determination of the hydrodynamic performance of prosthetic heart valves. High speed data acquisition and ensemble averaging techniques are employed to minimize error and provide a standard for data collection and analysis across a wide range of simulated physiologic conditions. Processing algorithms automatically divide the cardiac cycle into phases based on landmarks in the pressure and flow waveforms, with minimal variability and without operator intervention. The contributions of valve resistance, regurgitation, ejection, leakage, and power loss to hydrodynamic performance are isolated for investigation. Phasic power loss analysis is reviewed as a …
