Study Of An Analytical Method For Benzo(A)Pyrene Metabolites In Human Urine, Zheng Ouyang
Study Of An Analytical Method For Benzo(A)Pyrene Metabolites In Human Urine, Zheng Ouyang
Theses
A method developed by Becher and Bjorseth for analysis of PAH metabolites in urine was employed to investigate human exposure to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) - an ubiquitous environmental carcinogen. Preliminary results are presented showing the relationship between exposure to BaP and urinary elimination. Although the correlation between the two variables is not statistically significant, there appears to be a positive association with selected exposure varibles such as smoking. The identification of an association may establish urinary BaP as a marker of exposure.
However, detailed study of the analytical procedure indicated that recoveries with this method were as low as 3-8% for …

Determination Of Benzo(A)Pyrene Metabolites In The Bile Of Winter Flounder From The New York Bight, Xingmin Liu
Theses
A method for detecting the concentration of BaP Metabolites in fish tissues has been developed. The analytical procedure includes extraction of PAH and BaP Metabolites from fish bile, liver extract and muscle extract; reduction of metabolites to BaP using hydriodic acid; and subsequent analysis of the BaP by thin layer chromatography with fluorescence detection. The method is applied to tissues from fish collected from polluted as well as clean reference waters and experimental tanks with dilutions of treated industrial wastewater. Experimental results on one kind of bottom-dwelling fish, winter flounder, which comes from the Hudson-Raritan Estuary, NY, where the water …
Surfactant Enhanced Scrubbing In An Ejector Venturi Scrubber Of Sulfur Dioxide From Air Exhaust Streams, Humberto Roman
Surfactant Enhanced Scrubbing In An Ejector Venturi Scrubber Of Sulfur Dioxide From Air Exhaust Streams, Humberto Roman
Theses
The objective of this work was to determine the feasibility of applying the Surfactant Enhanced Scrubbing technique to the removal of sulfur dioxide using an ejector venturi scrubber.
Surfactants were chosen according to information from manufacturers. Those surfactants which offered good behavior in the presence of acidic solutions ( low pH ), and anti-corrosion characteristics were tested.
In the first phase, experiments were performed to determine the behavior of the foams in the ejector venturi scrubber. A foam destruction system was used when foaming conditions required it. In the second phase dynamic runs were performed to determine the removal efficiencies …
Design Of A Gear Driven Anti-Twister Mechanism For A Seal-Less Blood Processor, Ajit Nachiket Dastane
Design Of A Gear Driven Anti-Twister Mechanism For A Seal-Less Blood Processor, Ajit Nachiket Dastane
Theses
This thesis presents the design of a gear driven anti- twister mechanism for a blood cell separator. The anti- twister mechanism allows for continuous feed and discharge lines that are rigidly attached to the rotating centrifuge head, thus eliminating the need of rotating seals. It is anticipated that the device using a gear driven anti-twister mechanism will have smoother power transmission and closer rpm tolerances.
In addition, a procedure for the dynamic analysis of the existing device, which uses a belt-driven anti-twister mechanism, is developed. The experimental values obtained from the device are compared with the theoretical values obtained by …

Recirculation Flow Bioreactor For The Synthesis Of Nitroxide And N-Oxide Pharmaceuticals, Douglas Lischick
Theses
An investigation of the properties of calcium alginate immobilized hog liver microsomes, rich in FAD-containing mixed function oxidase, was performed. Studies involving catalyst storage, immobilization of cofactors within the matrix, and alginate gel concentration were performed using a 1.8 ml mixed flow micro assay reactor. A recirculation flow reactor was designed and used for the biochemical production of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-oxazolidine-l-oxyl, a potentially useful MRI contrast agent.
The activity of the immobilized microsomes was found to increase over time when stored in CaCl2 or in buffer at 4-8°C. The increase in activity is a result of the removal of inherent inhibitors …
Investigation Of Benzo(A)Pyrene In Outdoor Air, Indoor Air And Personal Inhalation Air, Hsiu-Wen Chen
Investigation Of Benzo(A)Pyrene In Outdoor Air, Indoor Air And Personal Inhalation Air, Hsiu-Wen Chen
Theses
The assessment of human exposure to an environmental contaminant requires the measurement of the concentrations levels present in each pathway of possible contact.
This was an investigation of human exposure to an environmental pollutant, benzo(a)pyrene, in outdoor air, indoor air and personal inhalation air samples. The analytical procedure involved extraction by ultrasonic and separation by thin layer chromatography, and detection by fluorescence. The resulting data was used to develop a profile of indoor and outdoor human exposure to B(a)P during the year.
Modelling And Parameter Estimation In Clinical Electrooculography, Shengche Hsu
Modelling And Parameter Estimation In Clinical Electrooculography, Shengche Hsu
Theses
The Corneoretinal potential (CRP) was discovered in 1848. Its response to changes in light intensity can provide information relevant in the diagnosis of some retinal degenerative disorders. The indirectly measured CRP is referred to as electro-oculography (EOG). A system for automatic data acquisition and modelling, providing graphic presentation, data processing and file management, has been developed. A linear feedback model is proposed to represent the dynamics of the EOG signal. Model parameters are estimated by the nonlinear least-square method. The effect of measurement time on the reliability of parameter estimation is discussed.
User Interactive Compensation For Si/So Systems Via Root-Locus, Shih-Mim Liu
User Interactive Compensation For Si/So Systems Via Root-Locus, Shih-Mim Liu
Theses
A powerful computer-aided root-locus method is described and applied to the compensation for SI/SO systems. The approach is based on the concept of continuation methods in which the solution of a parameterized family of algebraic problems is converted into the solution of a differential equation and incorporates the quadratic synthetic division technique. The root-locus is obtained in a systematic manner by numerical integration. Breakaway points are analyzed and classified according to the properties of higher order derivatives. A Turbo Pascal(4.0) program which utilizes the algorithm has been written.

A standard gas mixture of the 15 …
Investigation Of Major Mutagenic Substances In Airborne Particulate Matter : Biologically-Driven Analysis Of Fractions And Analysis Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) Nitro-Pahs And Other Classes Of Compounds, Jung-Hen Lwo
Theses
A modified fractionation scheme involving acid-base partitioning and silica gel column chromatography has been used as the first step in the bioassay-directed search for significant levels of mutagenic compounds in extracts of inhalable (IP10) ambient air particulates. The biologically "hot" fractions were separated and analyzed chemically or subfractionated to isolate and concentrate "hot" subfractions which were then chemically analyzed by GC/MS FTIR, and HPLC equipped with UV, Fluorescence and Photodiode Array UV detectors.
The Ames assay of mutagenicity has involved the unactivated TA98 strain of Salmonella and enzyme-activated (TA98+S9) assays. In addition, some assays have been performed in this present …

Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Trichloroethylene By Activated Carbon Fluidized-Bed, Yeam-How Chin
Theses
Abstract - The biodegradation of Trichloroethylene by using anaerobic activated carbon fluidized bed has been investigated in the present study. High quality effluent was obtainable when the TCE influent concentration was up to 2.4 ppm in the first stage. Glucose was introduced as a cosubstrate to determine the effects of glucose/TCE ratio on the COD, Glucose and TCE removal. The experimental data indicates that the overall TCE removal efficiency was only slightly affected by TCE loading, but the first stage performance was significantly influenced by TCE loadings. It was also found that the microbial activities were affected by TCE loadings …
Determination Of Trace Amounts Of Lead, Cadium And Zinc In Vegetables Using Differential Pulse Polarography, Elizabeth Franca-Romitti
Determination Of Trace Amounts Of Lead, Cadium And Zinc In Vegetables Using Differential Pulse Polarography, Elizabeth Franca-Romitti
Theses
Toxic metals are present in foods to greater or lesser extention as contaminants, as a result of increasing industrialization, and associated pollution of the biosphere. Lead and cadmium are well known toxic metals which accumulate into the body causing harmful effects at low concentration levels especially in children. Zinc, on the other hand, is an essential micronutrient, but larger levels in foods can be considered toxic.
Twenty eight brands of vegetables including canned, glass packed, frozen and fresh vegetables were analyzed for Pb, Cd, and Zn, in tomatoes, carrots, mushrooms and asparagus. The technique used was Differential Pulse Polarography (DPP) …
A Graphic Identity Program For The Thousand Acre Swamp Sanctuary, Cynthia B. Hummel
A Graphic Identity Program For The Thousand Acre Swamp Sanctuary, Cynthia B. Hummel
Theses
People have often failed to appreciate the significance of wetlands. Lack of awareness has caused wetlands to be drained, filled, and polluted, to meet shortterm human needs. One half of the original 215 million acres of wetlands in the United States no longer exist. Best estimates indicate that we are continuing to loose 458,000 acres of our remaining wetlands each year. Wetlands have an enormous ability to produce and support plant and animal life. They rank among the most productive ecosystems in the world, and produce as much plant growth as tropical jungles, and 20 times as much plant material …

Although I will try to explain my thesis as a progression, in truth many things were happening simultaneously. It actually seems as though I was bouncing back and forth between solving the technical problems and the creation of the films. the project was large and each aspect might have been more successful if I had not had to split my concentration in this manner. On the other hand I have an interest in both types of endeavor and both parts were necessary to the whole. I suppose the solution (as always) would have been simply having more time.

Navigational Tool For The Graphic Design Archive, Ken Hayward
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the possibilities of using animation to enable users to create a mental map of their location in a vast and complex sea of information. With computers' growing ability to give us large pools of information comes a need for us to use visual aids to help us feel comfortable while interfacing with these systems. This thesis will use animated sequences to help orient users as to where they are, where they have been (their path) and where they are able to go as they navigate through a system. These animations will be …

Points Of Hue, Andrea Kundin
Theses
My intent in this thesis is to display the visual capabilities of the computer as a tool to assist fabric designers, interior designers and consumers in a growing and demanding market. These ideas evolved out of my own personal interest in two seemingly different yet historically related fields, computers and textiles, and my feeling that there might be an obvious solution to the somewhat complex problem of visualizing surface pattern, texture and color in relation to the environment.

Teaching Intervention: "At Risk" Students Enabling Them To Succeed In School, Jeanie Harper
Theses
During the 1988-1989 school year, a teacher intervention program with "at risk" students was implemented at Wentzville High School. The project involved ten ''at risk" students who were currently enrolled in a reading class. These subjects were in grade nine through twelve and all had been labeled "at risk" by the district . The criteria used was several failed courses, excessive absences, repeated behavioral problems and a general inability to get along with their educators as well as their peers . An attempt was made to see if teacher intervention could help these students succeed in school by improving their …
A Corporate Identity Package For The Technical Association Of The Graphic Arts: A Methodological Approach, Charles G. Kuhn
A Corporate Identity Package For The Technical Association Of The Graphic Arts: A Methodological Approach, Charles G. Kuhn
Theses
The design problem concerning my thesis proposal was rather simple and clear-cut, the solution was certainly going to be more complex. the challenge for me was to create and develop a new organization identity for the Technical Association of the Graphics Arts (TAGA), an organization concerned and dedicated to the science and technology of the graphic arts. The original identity of TAGA lacked visual excitement, vitality and, above all, a cohesive and consistent appearance as it was used on printed applications. It also lacked a mark or symbol appropriate for an organization dealing in the field of graphic arts research …

Pixel-By-Pixel Reduction Of Atmospheric Haze Effects In Multispectral Digital Imagery Of Water, John W. Francis
Theses
A study is described in which the effects of the atmosphere on a remotely sensed, multispectral image of water are reduced in a spatially varying manner. The near zero IR reflectance of a water body is used to compute the atmospheric path transmittance and atmospheric path radiance on a pixel-by-pixel basis for a LANDSAT-5 Thematic Mapper image of Lake Ontario. TM Band 4 (0.76-0.90um) image radiance measures are used to define the atmospheric path radiance. Radiosonde data and the LOWTRAN 6 atmospheric model are used to compute the equivalent atmospheric effects for the spectral regions corresponding to the visible wavelength …

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an IBM PC-AT based system to effectively process electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Adaptive filter theory is used to implement a noise cancellation system (adaptive noise canceller), which adaptively cancels the ECG signals resulting in real ECG noise. The adaptive process is based on the well known least-mean square (LMS) algorithm.
The noise canceling system is software based. Several programs have been written, which include analog to digital converter control, data acquisition and storage, data retrieval, adaptive filtering and digitized data graphics.
The thesis presents numerous computer experiments. The performance of the adaptive noise …
The Introduction, Demonstration And Evaluation Of A New Typeface Identification System, J. Ames Parsons
The Introduction, Demonstration And Evaluation Of A New Typeface Identification System, J. Ames Parsons
Theses
Graphic communicators, including typographers, designers, and descriptive bibliographers, are often called upon to identify typefaces. Since there are thousands of typefaces available in the marketplace today, it is unlikely that any one designer, typographer or bibliographer can name them all at sight. Accordingly, there is a need tfor a typeface identification system. The purpose of this paper is to introduce, demonstrate and evaluate such a system. An identification system called TYPE-ID was developed and tested. Two principles -- the "pass option" and the "null digit" -- were introduced. A sequence of questions was written for a number of different characters. …
