Rug Making: An Exploration, Karen Breen Cooper
Theses
The following pages were written out of the desire to know about the past, present, and future of rugs and the people who make them. In addition to studying written sources and questioning textile experts, searching of oneself became an integral part of the learning process. A journal was kept throughout the creative journey. Writing, questioning, and searching has become a large part of the creative process; therefore it was considered vital that some of these thoughts were shared. Technical proficiency with textiles has been viewed as having utmost importance. To master a skill, it should be learned, practiced and …
Felt Garments, Mitsuko Tarui
Felt Garments, Mitsuko Tarui
Theses
This series of garments is my conception of art and fashion. By using different approaches to fiber, I wanted to make each garment unique; giving it its own life and character. By continuously challenging art and fashion, I hope to establish a new category for functional fiber pieces in art. In order to accomplish this goal, "felt" was selected as my main medium. Felt is a unwoven fabric made from wool. It can be shaped into any form, and mixed with different materials. Out of this flexible medium, I wanted to make garments which were like three-dimensional fiber forms rather …

3-D Longwave Infrared Synthetic Scene Simulation, Eric H. Shor
3-D Longwave Infrared Synthetic Scene Simulation, Eric H. Shor
Theses
A technique for thermal infrared (8-14 micrometers) synthetic image generation (SIG) was demonstrated that yields improved radiometric accuracy. This process utilizes the LOWTRAN 6 atmospheric propagation model and computer graphics ray-tracing techniques. A scene is created by placing faceted objects into world coordinates with rotation, translation, and scaling parameters. Each facet is assigned a material index and temperature. This index points to angular emissivity data for that material. LOWTRAN 6 can incorporate a sensor response function when calculating data files for the atmospheric transmission, upwelled and downwelled radiances, and temperature-to-radiance conversions. Ray-traced imagery is generated and discussed. The image is …

Study Of Marketing Techniques Involving Color And Texture Associations As Used In Book Publishing, Roxanne Mcclanahan
Theses
Books can send messages to reach the subconscious levels of the reader's mind. These subconscious messages are learned associations from past experiences that use color and texture as means of expression. This perception is not with the eyes, but more with the observer's mind. Therefore, when the book buyer is browsing in a bookstore and the suggestion that one experiences from looking at the book does not match one's subconscious message, the book is quickly put down. The principal object of this study is the effect of color and texture used in cover design of books on the subconscious mind …

Treatment Of Trucking Station Wastewater By Two-Phase Anaerobic Digestion System And Rotating Biological Contactor, Tzu-Wen Uen
Theses
The wastewater produced as a result of trucking station activities has some major characteristics such as high COD (26,880 mg/1-42,925 mg/1) and BOD (12,278 mg/1-7,265 mg/1), high COD to BOD ratio (3.49-3.69), high pH range (3.72-11.7), and high grease content (480 mg/1-1,960 mg/1). Therefore, prior to any treatment, it is important to provide some sort of pre-treatment for pH adjustment and grease/oil removal.
The present laboratory investigation has indicated that successful treatment and purification of the subject wastewater is possible using two-phase anaerobic digestion system followed by rotating biological contactor. More than 90% of both COD and BOD was removed …

Distributed Object-Oriented Discrete Event Simulation, Barbara Hendry
Theses
This paper presents criteria for an 'ideal' simulation language, compares four traditional simulation languages to this ideal and concludes that an object-oriented approach to simulation comes closer to the ideal than the traditional procedural approach. It also examines how the object-oriented approach can be very beneficial for distributing a simulation problem among several machines. A distributed object-oriented package is described and a manufacturing example written and explained using this package.
