Algorithm Animation And Its Application To Artificial Neural Network Learning, Walter Bubie C. Jan 1991

Algorithm Animation And Its Application To Artificial Neural Network Learning, Walter Bubie C.

Theses

Algorithm animation is a means of exploring the dynamic behavior of algorithms using computer-generated graphics to represent algorithm data and operations. Research in this field has focused on the architecture of flexible environments for exploring small, complex algorithms for data structure manipulation. This thesis describes a project examining two relatively unexplored aspects of algorithm animation: issues of view design effectiveness and its application to a different type of algorithm, namely back-propagation artificial neural network learning. The work entailed developing a framework for profiling views according to attributes such as symmetry, regularity, complexity, etc. This framework was based on current research …

An Object-Oriented Drawing Package In Smalltalk/V, Sigrid E. Mortensen Jan 1991

An Object-Oriented Drawing Package In Smalltalk/V, Sigrid E. Mortensen

Theses

Graphics creation applications tend to fall into two categories: bit-mapped paint packages, and object-oriented drawing packages. Although each interface has its own unique advantages, few vendors have attempted to integrate the two into a single package. Those who have tried have, in fact, poor integration both from the user's perspective and in the underlying mathematical model. In this thesis, I have addressed the issue of integrating bit-mapped and object-oriented interfaces by creating an object-oriented graphics package which provides the user with a consistent interface for creating and manipulating both graphical objects and bit-mapped graphics. The consistency of the interface was …

Astronauts And Xingu: An Exhibition Of Cultural Ideograms, Edward Mineck Jan 1991

Astronauts And Xingu: An Exhibition Of Cultural Ideograms, Edward Mineck

Theses

The intention of my thesis is to alter some of American culture's prevailing sentiments on the relationship between: masculine and feminine; visceral and cognitive; natural and technological; as well as altering perceptions of the loci of power in our culture. The thesis exhibition was composed of seventeen gum bichromate assemblages composed of elementary images appropriated from popular media. Each composite piece is a recontextualization of extant representations. I have taken things from their typical or original context and re-presented them in a context that I have selected and directed. The new relationships established among the appropriated component images and the …

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Benchscale And Pilot Plant Studies, Yaoli He Dec 1990

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Benchscale And Pilot Plant Studies, Yaoli He

Theses

Microwave treatment of hazardous wastes was studied on both bench-scale and pilot plant scales. Bench-scale studies were carried out on two processes: steam distillation to effect the removal of volatile and semi-volatile organics from substrata like soil; immobilization of heavy metals like chromium in soil.

The pilot plant work involved the start-up of a newly-installed facility and the determination of the efficiency of energy transfer from the power system to a load.

It was found that microwave generated steam within the substratum effects the distillation of naphthalene in both sandy soil and clay soil, respectively; 95% removal is effected within …

Theses

The present study was carried out in order to assess the ability of Phanerochaete chysosporium to degrade lindane (hexachlorocyclohexane) in sand as well as in water. It was found that the fungus is immobilized on saw dust, it is able to degrade lindane in a packed-bed reactor configuration, with a first-order rate constant of 0.00066min-1. The fungus is also able to degrade lindane in sand. As with the packed-bed reactor, a supplemental carbon source (glucose) is required. In this study it was found that a glucose concentration of 20 gm/kg of sand, and 40% w/w moisture content, give …

American Dreams, Mark Lyons Nov 1990

American Dreams, Mark Lyons

Theses

The intention of this thesis is to investigate metaphorical narratives about experiences in American life. The commentaries depict cultural ironies and satirical imagery of everyday activity. The vessel is used as a stage for these metaphors. I used various glazes, stains, and atmospheres in firing, multiple techniques in construction, and a collection of common historical and personal imagery in each piece. A narrative environment appeared to be the best mechanism to convey statements in the vessels. This body of work reflects many of the experiences I had as a child. These experiences translate into many of the values our society …

Aggression And Symbols Of Power, Karen Kuhn Oct 1990

Aggression And Symbols Of Power, Karen Kuhn

Theses

Weapons are one of the oldest and most significant forms of artifacts, occurring in virtually all human cultures. Weapons and their technology often determine power structures, not only by brute force of arms, but by long standing respect to ritual aggression. In many cultures, weapons have become abstracted and formalized to become symbols of power and authority, as in a ruler 's scepter, which is a glorified war club. Jewelry functions in much the same manner, proclaiming the social status of the wearer, although in the western world, we have lost most of the symbolic meaning of our jewelry; for …

Ligament Reconstruction : A Biomechanical Cadaveric Test Of Autogenous Repairs And The In Vivo Evaluation Of Synthetic Scaffold Materials, Anne Marie Daly Sep 1990

Ligament Reconstruction : A Biomechanical Cadaveric Test Of Autogenous Repairs And The In Vivo Evaluation Of Synthetic Scaffold Materials, Anne Marie Daly

Theses

The knee joint is the largest and one of the most complex joints in the human body. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major intra-articular ligaments responsible for controlling and guiding the knee through most of its range of motion and its rupture alters normal joint mechanics.

One objective of this thesis was to determine if two autogenous tissue ACL reconstruction methods were biomechanically equivalent. The first method using the central one-third of the patellar tendon has been used clinically since the early 1960s. The second method utilizes portions of both the semitendinosus and the iliotibial band. …

Landmark-Based Partial Shape Recognition By A Two-Stage Bam Neural Network, Xianjun Liu Sep 1990

Landmark-Based Partial Shape Recognition By A Two-Stage Bam Neural Network, Xianjun Liu

Theses

In this thesis, we develop a Bitfirectional Associative Memory (BAM) based neural network to achieve partial shape recognition. To recognize objects which are partially occluded, we represent each object by a set of landmarks. The landmarks of an object are points of interest relative to the object that have important shape attributes. To achieve recognition, feature values (landmark values) of each model object are trained and stored in the network. Each memory cell is trained to store landmark values of a model object for all possible positions. Given a scene which may consist of several objects, landmarks in the scene …

Correlation Of Finite Element And Experimental Eigenvectors, Derek J. Krebs Jun 1990

Correlation Of Finite Element And Experimental Eigenvectors, Derek J. Krebs

Theses

A technique for correlating a complex structure's finite element eigenvectors with its respective experimental eigenvectors is presented. The technique provides a quantitative comparison of the finite element and experimental eigenvectors by using a reduced finite element mass matrix in a "cross" orthogonality check. Comparisons of two case studies are presented: a thin plate with motion in the Z-direction only and a 3-dimensional table structure with motion in three principal coordinate directions . Along with the orthogonality check, the difference in the eigenvectors is computed and shown graphically. The orthogonality check between the finite element and experimental eigenvectors can serve as …

Quality Assurance Studies For Collection Of Whole Air Samples In Stainless Steel Canisters, For Volatile Organic Compound Determinations, Weifang Ji May 1990

Quality Assurance Studies For Collection Of Whole Air Samples In Stainless Steel Canisters, For Volatile Organic Compound Determinations, Weifang Ji

Theses

Internally polished stainless steel canisters are being used in many laboratories to collect whole air samples for VOC analysis. The replacement of adsorbents for collection and concentration of VOC by canister collection, with in-laboratory cryogenic concentration, may solve some problems associated with adsorbents, such as artifact generation and breakthrough. However, the canisters can be a source of new problems, ranging from wall adsorption to memory effects.

In this work, four major contamination sources in the whole air sampling and analyzing system have been identified. They are the canister internal adsorption, the whole system transfer line, the air pump and the …

Chemical Degradation Of Pcp And Polychlorophenols, Kon-Tsu Kin May 1990

Chemical Degradation Of Pcp And Polychlorophenols, Kon-Tsu Kin

Theses

There are generally two ways of removing PCP and polychlorophenols from the environment: biodegradation and photodecomposition. However, no convenient way has yet been available to destroy PCP wastes which exist in a concentrated form which may result from some cases of emergency spills. In this thesis, a chemical oxidation procedure is proposed for the destruction of PCP and polychlorophenols.

In a water medium and in the presence of base and oxidant, the PCP and model polychlorophenols destruction percentage obtained is higher than 99.8%. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) are utilized as the bases, and sodium hypochlorite …

The Legal Studies Of Women Employees, Yi-Ling Lin May 1990

The Legal Studies Of Women Employees, Yi-Ling Lin

Theses

Discrimination against women in the workplace has always existed, but because few women in the United stated worked until the Second World War, it was not regarded as a major issue before then. Although Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids employer and union discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, many available studies still showed that most women experienced discrimination in employment, especially in salary and promotion. In addition, there were a growing number of cases of sexual harassment in the workplace. This study was concerned with the implementation and effectiveness of legislation …

Japanese Management Techniques And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 (Title Vii), Doris S. Mao May 1990

Japanese Management Techniques And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 (Title Vii), Doris S. Mao

Theses

Japanese management techniques have been praised for its high efficiency and quality output. However, when these same techniques are transplanted in the United States, the results have been less than desirable. This thesis will investigate how the nature of the Japanese management system lends itself to employment discriminations which have resulted in court cases against Japanese firms in US.

The thesis will firstly identify the unique characteristics of Japanese management techniques and the reasons behind the efficient operations of Japanese firms. Since the Japanese management system is based on a paternal concept which identifies the corporation as the "second family", …

A Comparison Of Integrated And Differential Estimates Of Flourescent Intensity Profiles Using Digital Video Image Analysis, Langfang Wu May 1990

A Comparison Of Integrated And Differential Estimates Of Flourescent Intensity Profiles Using Digital Video Image Analysis, Langfang Wu

Theses

The dynamics of macromolecular transport across microvascular walls in the hamster cheek pouch have previously been studied by other investigators using fluorescence intravital microscopy. Fluorescein Isothiocyanate labeled Dextrans (FITC-Dx) of 20,000, and 70,000 molecular weight (FITC-Dx-20 and FITC- Dx-70) were used as macromolecular probes. Values of fluorescent intensity were previously recorded on videotape as a function of distance perpendicular to leaking vessels over a period of about 2.5 hr to allow for tracer equilibration in the interstitial space. In this study, these videotapes were played back frame-by-frame and 215x130-pixel windows around each leaking vessel were selected for further analysis of …

X-Ray Powder Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy Studies Of Soil Containing Chromium Immobilized By Microwave Treatment, Nagui Ibrahim May 1990

X-Ray Powder Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy Studies Of Soil Containing Chromium Immobilized By Microwave Treatment, Nagui Ibrahim

Theses

The orientation of soil contaminants such as chromium is altered during microwave heating. The SEM and EDS were utilized in the study. The nature of the orientation is related to the heating time. This results in immobilizing the contaminant in leaching tests. The non-leachibility was related to the reactivity of the chromium salt with the soil hematite phase (Fe2O3) during the microwaving. This was proved By the X-ray diffraction analysis. The spectrums obtained from 30 and 60 minutes microwaved samples were identical in the crystal phases and were significantly different from the contaminated unheated sample.

Eeg Mapping Using The Personal Computer, Zhuan-Zhang Pei May 1990

Eeg Mapping Using The Personal Computer, Zhuan-Zhang Pei

Theses

An approach for brain electrical activity mapping using a personal computer has been investigated to enhance the visibility of the EECs. An automatic procedure from data acquisition to the final mapping has been developed for on-line or off-line data processing, in which a table-look-up technique has been introduced to eliminate redundant processing. The power spectra in different EEC frequency bands for four electrodes are coded into 15 colors and mapped on a color monitor. The data correspondings to the areas between electrodes are interpolated by the surface spline method. The mapping speed and smoothness has been optimized. An experiment has …

A Study Of Methane Gas Production On Anaerobic Digestion System, Seng-Fung Su May 1990

A Study Of Methane Gas Production On Anaerobic Digestion System, Seng-Fung Su

Theses

The anaerobic sludge digestion process is not a recent development. At least 100 years ago in France,Louis H. Mouras designed and constructed fermenters to liquefy the sludge obtained from domestic wastes.

Since the turn of the century, the anaerobic fermentation process has been used extensively in the treatment of waste-water solids.

The necessity of preventing pollution of water resource, as a consequence of the rapid increase in human waste, demands adequate treatment of liquid wastes from domestic and industrial sources. For this purpose, the anaerobic digestion process can play an important role as a method for stabilizing and eliminating wastes …
