My Direct Reports: Office Toys For Young Adults., Yunglin Tsun
My Direct Reports: Office Toys For Young Adults., Yunglin Tsun
Theses
Today, working in an office is more challenging than ever. The space is often filled with tension and the work requires people to make decisions and perform their duties in a fast-paced environment. To ease anxiety and keep productivity high, companies often encourage employees to bring toys to their office. However, in the current market, toys for grownups often miss the mark: most of them still use the same design language as children's toys. As adults, we appreciate objects differently. How can we as designers extract the spirit of a toy, then incorporate it into products that appeal to grown-ups …

A Vacation Within A Vacation: An Examination Of How Child Participation In Day Programs During Family Vacations Influences Parental Satisfaction With The Vacation, Kathrin Mirjam Birchler
Theses
Family vacations are an important part of life for many families. This paper will give an overview of family recreation and family vacations. Family recreation has many positive effects that influence family life and can lead to a better overall satisfaction for parents and children. This leads to certain advantages that many families experience while on vacation. Lastly, leisure constraints theory and family systems theory are described. These two theories serve as the theoretical framework of this study. In order to collect data a questionnaire was e-mailed to parents whose children attended a children's program while on family vacations. A …
Through Place, Sarah Newman
Through Place, Sarah Newman
Theses
Through Place is comprised of diverse, sometimes un-idyllic landscapes. Many of the pictures contain a trace--an alteration to the land, a specter of human presence. Yet these marks are pictured inclusively; the scenes are explored with interest and without judgment. They offer a reformulation of the division between the human and the natural, wherein "the natural" draws the largest circle. The images are made in geographically and culturally diverse places (from the Peruvian Amazon to ski mountains in California). "Place" becomes replaced by interpretation, fiction: representations that intermingle with our own agency, expectations, and memories.

Obesity and Diabetes, the major cause for morbidity and mortality in United States raises a general curiosity regarding health care expenses when talked about treating them. Every year approximately 300,000 US adults die of reasons associated to obesity and diabetes, becoming the sixth leading cause of death. The prevalence of those diagnosed with diabetes witnessed an exponential curve in the last decade and for the year 2011 about 8.3% of the population in the US has been diagnosed with diabetes and it is predicted that in the year 2030 the prevalence of diabetes is to reach 4.4% globally. Type 2 …
Voice Of Women In Byzantine Music Within The Greek Orthodox Churches In America, Rachel Nicole Brashier
Voice Of Women In Byzantine Music Within The Greek Orthodox Churches In America, Rachel Nicole Brashier
Theses
Byzantine chant, the music of the Greek Orthodox Churches in America, embeds meanings and functions as a methodological tool which constructs and teaches about the role of women within church communities. This thesis explores how as cultural group identity, belongingness, and gender identity are semiotically iconized, purified, and recursively transmitted through the liturgical music of the church, specifically hymns about women saints and The Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God. This work is a culmination of twelve years of ethnomusicological fieldwork conducted by the author in Midwestern Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries, using participant-observation techniques. The work outlines the …
Evaluation Of Soybean Recombinant Inbred Lines For Yield Potential And Resistance To Sudden Death Syndrome, James Arthur Anderson
Evaluation Of Soybean Recombinant Inbred Lines For Yield Potential And Resistance To Sudden Death Syndrome, James Arthur Anderson
Theses
Evaluation of soybean recombinant inbred lines for seed weight yield, agronomic traits, and resistance to sudden death syndrome Sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium virguliforme is a devastating disease in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) that causes up to 70% of yield losses depending on the developmental stage when the plant become infected. The characterization of resistance is greatly significant for disease management. Therefore, three populations were developed by crossing three resistant lines, `Hamilton', LS90-1920 and LS97-1610 with a susceptible line to SDS, `Spencer'. Ninety-four F5:6 recombinant inbred lines from each population (Hamilton x Spencer, LS90-1920 x Spencer, and …
A Night In The Jungle, Ignacio Barrios
A Night In The Jungle, Ignacio Barrios
Theses
The 3D short film "A Night In The Jungle" is a character animation piece that tells the very simple story of a monkey trying to enjoy a good night's sleep in the deep of the jungle, only to be interrupted by a snoring sloth that falls near him. The project was completed using Autodesk Maya and Adobe Creative Suite. The film is purposely dialogue-free, and has the straightforward goal of entertaining its audience with classic animated physical comedy in the vein of the MGM and Warner shorts from the golden era. Although all of the imagery in the film is …
A Bed Of Butterflies, Erica Hardy
A Bed Of Butterflies, Erica Hardy
Theses
Why animate that? This question was posed to us animation students during our first week in graduate school. When one considers the amount of time, energy and money it takes to create an animated piece it is a good question to ask before starting. In the spring of 2009 I found myself asking this very question as I considered the story that I wanted to use for my thesis film. "A Bed of Butterflies" is a personal family story about my father's brother Keith, who died at the age of twenty-two of kidney failure. A real story about real people …
Tech Service, John Valenti
Tech Service, John Valenti
Theses
The graduate thesis film Tech Service is a 21- minute surreal memoir-parody of its creator's day at work in a tech support call center. Having quite literally separated his at-work self from his not-at-work self into two independently existing personae--the former an ambitious technician whose only goal in the world is to fix a customer's telephone, and the latter a more cynical, quasi-beat poet who narrates the story--the film rambunctiously ponders and pursues the meaning of life, if life were reduced to the job you have to go to but don't really like that much. The film was shot in …

Theses
This completed 30 minute documentary is a true story that covers a period of 10 years in the life of retired Commander Suzanne Giesemann. As the aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Commander Suzanne Giesemann shook hands with Presidents, kings and queens, but was also a personal witness to the horrors of 9/11. This, followed by a family tragedy, led her to investigate areas of reality beyond anything she had ever known. The story of this 180-degree life transition to her current work as author, inspirational speaker, spiritual teacher and evidential medium is uniquely intriguing, inspiring …
Force, Lee Crowley
Force, Lee Crowley
Theses
Energy, force, matter and volume are fundamental characteristics of the universe. These defining characteristics exist in all scales and can be found throughout space. My work considers the actions and reactions of forces and how movements are challenged by various energies. My creative investigations began by looking at the world in its entirety and considering both natural and man-made forces. I approached the work with the intent to alter what we recognize as structure and strength, and to act upon it, to challenge its integrity and create a progression of an implied action. Influenced by pioneers in the photographic capture …

Theses
My work is driven by the metaphysical and the potential for healing through the manipulation of energy. Points of research include the enso (the only symbol used in Zen Buddhism), which uses the circle as a symbol of wholeness, divinity, and enlightenment. The writings of Alex Grey, Eckhart Tolle and the work of Ann Hamilton will also be investigated. I plan to create work from turned wooden vortex forms, the shapes of which are based on the movement of energy within the body. These objects will be transformed from wood, through rubber, wax, plaster, iron, bronze to cast, and blown …
Thomas Aquinas: Soul-Body Connection And The Afterlife, Hyde Dawn Krista
Thomas Aquinas: Soul-Body Connection And The Afterlife, Hyde Dawn Krista
Theses
Thomas Aquinas nearly succeeds in addressing the persistent problem of the mind-body relationship by redefining the human being as a body-soul (matter-form) composite. This redefinition makes the interaction problem of substance dualism inapplicable, because there is no soul “in” a body. However, he works around the mind-body problem only by sacrificing an immaterial afterlife, as well as the identity and separability of the soul after death. Additionally, Thomistic psychology has difficulty accounting for the transmission of universals, nor does it seem able to overcome the arguments for causal closure. Thomas constructs his distinct philosophy of the soul by interpreting Aristotelian …

Classroom Habitat: Natural System Of Movement, Sandra Turner
Theses
With all the new technology in today's world, we are hard pressed to find a "sense of wonder and awe" unless it is plugged into a wall. As Jonathan Chapman describes in his book, Emotionally Durable Design; "Modern products seriously lack ... character and allure; they are too smart and precise, removing all possible surprise, mystery and, perhaps above all, charm from the process of engaging with them" (p. 49). Children spend as much, if not more time at school than at home. The classroom plays a critical role in a child's emotional development, yet the objects in the classroom …

Visualizing Actin Regulatory Proteins & The Mechanoelectrical Ion Channel In Inner Ear Stereocilia, Chih-Tao Tu
Theses
My thesis was a continuation of the "3D Virtual Ear Animation" project for the Imagine RIT Festival held in spring 2010. I worked with Dr. David Corey, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, whose research publications I had been reading since the spring of 2010. I learned about information that explains how hearing is transformed into neural signals ultimately perceived by the brain. Motivated by the presence of hearing-impaired students on the campus, I decided to continue this animation project. Another motivation for this topic was the lack of illustrations and animations that captured the latest discoveries, particularly the …

Contemporary technological developments allow for greater manipulation of the natural world than ever before. While the increasing variety of synthetic materials, techniques, and equipment employed in horticulture and urban development are reshaping the land, sophisticated digital imaging tools, ranging from computer-generated graphics to 3D modeling and rendering software, are changing the way we design and represent landscapes. Through technology, we are continually imitating, reconstructing, and perfecting the natural environment. As a result, the physical and conceptual borders between the organic and synthetic elements, the "born" and the "made," in our physical environments are becoming progressively obscured, as are the lines …

In semi-arid parts of the world such as the U A E, salinity is a major constraint to plant growth and development. More than 80 % of a land plants live in symbiosis with soil fungi of the Glomeromycota. These are also called arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and have been shown to contribute to growth and nutrient uptake of a broad range of agricultural plants. A positive effect of the AM symbiosis on plant performance under salinity has often been observed, but the precise mechanisms behind this effect are unknown to date. Mycotrophic plants common I) grown on saline sandy …
The Development Of Resistance To Antibiotics From Bacteria Exposed To Triclosan And Triclocarban In Lake Ontario, Daniel Boone
The Development Of Resistance To Antibiotics From Bacteria Exposed To Triclosan And Triclocarban In Lake Ontario, Daniel Boone
Theses
Triclocarban (3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide) (TCC) and Triclosan ( 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether) (TCS) are antimicrobials used extensively in soaps and detergents. They're known to bypass wastewater treatment plants and bioaccumulate in aquatic sediments. Their accumulation leads to an increase in bacterial exposure, which may lead to both antiseptic and antibiotic resistance, known as cross-resistance. This study investigates the occurrence of cross-resistance with bacteria exposed to TCS and TCC in Lake Ontario sediments. Sediment samples were chosen at various sites with a high probability of TCS and TCC exposure. The bacteria were enriched with 5mg/L TCS (equivalent to environmental concentrations) and the top biodegraders were …

In art, there is potential to turn the passive into an active. Task: Take the compass. Use it and draw a circle on graph paper. Fold the graph paper in half. Unfold. In this action, symmetry establishes a drawn circle. In the circle there is a center. To acknowledge the center a drawn periphery of this determined circle, acts as the container for a located center. The larger a diameter is scored, the more dissolved a center will be represented. To concentrate in articulation for the current sculptural research, a determined idea roots in communication. Through acknowledgement of a centralized …

In our current economic state, instant gratification from the satisfaction by the real time products and services and experiences are in demand for consumers. As a result, there are several if not many of these real-time base services that have arisen from what the consumers' desire. During the research, I have witnessed the phenomenon that would fit the criteria. The perfect example would be the popularity of meals on wheels in the United States. Setting a new trend in the fast food market, the food truck industry has reached the numbers well over the thousands and still counting with their …
