Theses

Ideas of human interaction and levels of physical construction touched upon in geometry and physics have saturated my practice for many years. Having come from a small town in Virginia and moving to a big city like Chicago, I was confronted with massive amounts of people, ideas, cultures, and stimuli of which I had never before conceived. I realized that how we interact as people is a similar dynamic found in molecular interaction. This same interaction takes place in celestial formation, plant growth, decomposition, and even emotion. As I came to terms with my own presence in the world, my …

Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley Jul 2012

Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley

Theses

Much of the developing world lacks access to a dependable source of energy. Agricultural societies such as Mozambique and Papua New Guinea could sustain a reliable energy source through the microbacterial decomposition of animal and crop waste. Anaerobic digestion produces methane, which can be used directly for heating, cooking, and lighting. Adding a solar component to the digester provides a catalyst for bacteria activity, accelerating digestion and increasing biogas production. Using methane decreases the amount of energy expended by collecting and preparing firewood, eliminates hazardous health effects linked to inhalation of particles, and provides energy close to where it is …

Analysis Of Translating Hydrofoil Power Generation Systems (Hydrokites), Kelsey Mcconnaghy Jul 2012

Analysis Of Translating Hydrofoil Power Generation Systems (Hydrokites), Kelsey Mcconnaghy

Theses

The hydrokite is a novel hydro-power system that is based on emerging kite wind-energy systems which are currently being designed for use at high altitudes. The hydrokite system is comprised of a hydrofoil and a support system, and is designed to capture kinetic energy from the flow of a river while reducing negative impacts on the river ecology by minimally interfering with the rivers natural flow (i.e. no dams or river diversions are needed). This work presents some initial results which demonstrate the power performance capabilities of the hydrokite. Two different steady-state models for this system were studied to determine …

A Cup Is A Corpse: A Thesis Project Implementing An Experimental Approach To Visual Communication And Advocating The Concept Of Slow Design, Yu Fen Kung

Theses

Based on the dissection of the phenomenon of coffee culture and the introspection of the negative environmental impact from the overwhelming usage of paper coffee cups, this thesis explores a design approach to advocate the paper coffee cup issue in an educational and experimental way. A Cup Is A Corpse is a thesis that defines the possibilities between environmental topic and design resolution. It is an advertising campaign targeted on local coffee shops, providing fundamental knowledge of the paper coffee cup matter to regular consumers. A slow design approach is applied to the final design application for the reason of …

Man Alone: An Examination Of Animal Rights, Heather M. Werner Jun 2012

Man Alone: An Examination Of Animal Rights, Heather M. Werner

Theses

This paper seeks to answer two primary questions: 1) What do we mean by rights?, and 2) How do animals fit into that rights structure? I discuss rights theory broadly, and end with the determination that Contractarianism is the only theory we can accept, if we wish to avoid metaphysical entanglements. By supplanting rationality with four criteria I develop to distinguish contracting from non-contracting agents, I am able to avoid the most serious flaws in this theory. This paper then moves on to consider how we deal with children and the cognitively impaired, inside of my developed rights structure. Using …

Passion For Food: Redesigning The Way We Eat, Nicole Chen Jun 2012

Passion For Food: Redesigning The Way We Eat, Nicole Chen

Theses

Where has the passion in food gone? The focus of food has been on the obesity epidemic, as people demand fast, cheap, and easy foods. The symbol of food is no longer seen as a basic need for survival because of the abundance and options of goods. Being unaware of food and its' power to bring and express so many facets of life, has given me the chance to discover areas that could be redesigned. During these past few years learning about food has made me fully understand these processes as a symbiotic relationship. In today's society, what separates people …

Classification Of Phase Transition Behavior In A Model Of Evolutionary Dynamics, Dawn Michelle King Jun 2012

Classification Of Phase Transition Behavior In A Model Of Evolutionary Dynamics, Dawn Michelle King

Theses

Amongst the scientific community, there is consensus that evolution has occurred; however, there is much disagreement about how evolution happens. In particular, how do we explain biodiversity and the speciation process? Computational models aid in this study, for they allow us to observe a speciation process within time scales we would not otherwise be able to observe in our lifetime. Previous work has shown phase transition behavior in an assortative mating model as the control parameter of maximum mutation size (µ) is varied. This behavior has been shown to exist on landscapes with variable fitness (Dees and Bahar, 2010), and …

The Suitability Of Ground Date (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) Pits And Ghaf (Prosopis Cineraria L.) Pods As Horticultural Growth Media Or Soil Amendments, Saeed Khalifa Alshaali

Theses

The UAE and its neighboring countries are encountering scarcity of water resources and soil degradation due to salinization. The current over-exploitation of aquifers by the agricultural sector is a major concern for the government. Open field production of forage as a feed for camels, cows and small ruminants requires particularly high amounts of irrigation water. Greenhouse production of fodder might save water, but would require a suitable growth substrate that is readily available in the UAE, and ideally constitutes a palatable fodder itself. The objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of ground D.pits and G.pods as growth …

Heterogeneity-Aware And Energy-Aware Scheduling And Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mahesh Kumar Vasanthu Somashekar May 2012

Heterogeneity-Aware And Energy-Aware Scheduling And Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mahesh Kumar Vasanthu Somashekar

Theses

A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a group of specialized transducers, called sensor nodes, with a communication infrastructure intended to monitor and record conditions at diverse locations. Since WSN applications are usually deployed in an open environment, the network is exposed to rough weather conditions, such as rain and snow. Another problem that WSN applications need to deal with is the energy constraints of sensor nodes. Both problems adversely affect the lifetime of WSN applications. A lot of research has been conducted to prolong the lifetime of WSN applications considering energy constraints of sensor nodes, but not much research has …

The Effects Of Theophylline On The In Vitro Respiratory Response To Hypoxia, Ke Geng May 2012

The Effects Of Theophylline On The In Vitro Respiratory Response To Hypoxia, Ke Geng

Theses

The isolated transverse brainstem slice preparation of neonatal mice is employed to investigate the function of theophylline, a competitive nonselective phophodiesterase inhibitor and adenosine receptor antagonist, on the hypoxic ventilatory response. Brainstem slices are isolated from neonatal mice (4-8 days old) and superfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF), equilibrated with a hyperoxic gas mixture (95% O2, 5% CO2) as a control, and anoxic mixture (0% O2, 5% CO2, 95% N2) to create severe hypoxia at the tissue level. Using suction electrodes, extracellular population activities of respiratory neurons is recorded from …

Experimental Evaluation Of Near Infrared Light Penetration Into Neural Tissue, Ujwal Anil Parikh May 2012

Experimental Evaluation Of Near Infrared Light Penetration Into Neural Tissue, Ujwal Anil Parikh

Theses

Near infrared (NIR) lasers find applications in medicine both for diagnostic and treatment purposes. Penetration depth into the tissue is a critical parameter to be considered in these NIR laser applications. Published data on the optical properties of rodent neural tissue are rare, despite the frequent use of rats as animal models. The aim of this study was to directly measure the light intensity profile inside the rat brain gray matter that is illuminated by an NIR laser beam. The local light intensities were sampled using an optical fiber inserted into the brain. The intensity profile in the axial direction …

Fmri Assessment Of Ischemic Stroke In Humans, Rui Yuan May 2012

Fmri Assessment Of Ischemic Stroke In Humans, Rui Yuan

Theses

Cerebral ischemia, or brain ischemia is a kind of stroke where the blood flow is insufficient to the metabolic demand of brain. The lack of oxygen supply will directly lead to the death of brain tissue. There are two major injury regions: the infarct and penumbra. Mostly, since the infarct regions became dead tissues rapidly after stroke, there is a tiny possibility to rescue them in time. But penumbra parts are different. Tissues there will be viable for hours after ischemia. Hence, both theoretically and practically, it is possible to salvage those cells in the penumbra region. Diffusion weighted image …

Alterations In Brain Connectivity After Spinal Cord Injury Using Functional Mri, Yamin Ahmed Noor May 2012

Alterations In Brain Connectivity After Spinal Cord Injury Using Functional Mri, Yamin Ahmed Noor

Theses

Every year, approximately 50 people per million of inhabitants are inflicted by Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). The long-term impairment of the SCI patients has led researchers to investigate different rehabilitation and treatment efforts that require careful observations to be made on reliable markers. Presently, a number of neuropsychological assessments are used for SCI rehabilitation and research purposes. However, there is a need for the discovery of sensitive biomarkers that can be used to characterize SCI. Altered functional connectivity in the brain has been observed in a number of neurological patient populations. Hence, it was hypothesized that such alterations in brain …

Hive Five, Tom Kotcher May 2012

Hive Five, Tom Kotcher

Theses

For my thesis, I started out with the ambition of creating a game using Augmented Reality, but in the end created a game in Flash called Hive Five. I used multiple techniques and technologies in order to help accomplish this. By combining two-dimensional and three-dimensional assets, the player gets the best of both worlds. This also gives it the flexibility to be converted later into a mobile game since it is not hard on processing power. This game gave me a solid start with graphics and a strong programming skeleton that I can continue on with in the future. Through …

Discovering The Role Of Serpine2 In Copd, Swati Shimpi May 2012

Discovering The Role Of Serpine2 In Copd, Swati Shimpi

Theses

SERPINE2 is a genetic marker of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which is a complex human disease and has no cure. In COPD patients three distinct pathology features, Emphysema, Chronic bronchitis and bronchus- associated lymphoid tissue or BALT like lesions, are observed. SERPINE2 deficient mouse was studied in Mariani lab to find association of SERPINE2 with COPD. This mouse model emulates the lungs of COPD and mimics the lesions of BALT in COPD, with excessive lymphocytes. A total of six samples, three knock out and three age - matched wild type, were used for differential gene expression analysis by Microarray. …

Macroinvertebrates Online, Caitlin Treuting May 2012

Macroinvertebrates Online, Caitlin Treuting

Theses

Macrobenthic invertebrates are important indicators of water quality in many aquatic systems, but accurately identifying these organisms is a challenge, particularly for citizen scientists, due to insufficient funding for training programs and events and a dwindling pool of training personnel. Accurately identifying these organisms is key to the accuracy of the models used to generate the water quality assessments. To help address these issues, this project has developed an interactive online photographic key for macrobenthic invertebrates, designed to improve classification accuracy with minimal training for use by citizen scientists. The online digital photographic field guide was created and tested against …

Remanufacturing: The Game, Karli Tucker May 2012

Remanufacturing: The Game, Karli Tucker

Theses

In an effort to increase awareness about sustainability, I have developed an interactive game that is intended to teach children about Remanufacturing and how it benefits the environment. Through a series of Flash games, my project allows users to take a broken robot named Remy through each step of the Remanufacturing process until he is Remanufactured to be better than new. This allows users to see first-hand how Remanufacturing works and why each step of the process is important. Having users be a part of the process makes for a more engaging explanation of sustainability and the Remanufacturing process. The …

Dynamic Pricing Strategy To Optimally Allocate Vaccines, Mauricio Pommier Gasser May 2012

Dynamic Pricing Strategy To Optimally Allocate Vaccines, Mauricio Pommier Gasser

Theses

In the United States, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) makes recommendations as to which cohorts (identified groups of individuals) ought to have higher priority access to vaccines when their supply is insufficient to immunize all susceptible individuals in the country. Typically, cohorts are determined based on susceptibility to contracting seasonal influenza and on the resulting consequences of infection for different age groups. For seasonal influenza, high-risk cohorts commonly include children, teenagers, pregnant women and people with different chronic diseases. This study proposes the application of revenue management theory to better allocate seasonal influenza vaccines among different risk-based population …
