The sample consisted of 15 women who volunteered to be part of this study, the majority of whom had participated in one of a number of divorce support groups co-facilitated by the researcher.

The intent of this study was to determine whether or not women who are working full time outside …

Me And Mikey (A Series Of Essays), Bryan R. Kasten Jan 1992

Me And Mikey (A Series Of Essays), Bryan R. Kasten

Theses

1bis project is a series of short stories based on but, not limited to my personal experiences. Imaginative exaggeration plays an important part. As Mark Twain once said, "I am the wellspring of truth. However, one does not bring up the entire well at once, but a bucket at a time." In each of these stories is a drop of truth.

The stories are a look at middle class life and various situations encountered by everyday people. The characters in these stories are based on real people, but their individual traits are stretched a bit to create satire and humor. …

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers Jan 1992

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers

Theses

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive, irreversible disease of the brain. It is not a normal or inevitable result of the aging process. However, as more people live to advanced age, the susceptible population will increase, as will the number of people afflicted with this disease. Alzheimer's Disease presents a challenge by taking away the patient's ability to remember, as well as the ability to learn.

Alzheimer's Disease has been characterized by many professionals as "the thief of minds" (Gewertz 23). Memories of life experiences and even one's own family members fade away leaving the person a stranger to those who …

Levels Of Differentiation Of Self In Married Couples, Margaret Galantowicz Jan 1992

Levels Of Differentiation Of Self In Married Couples, Margaret Galantowicz

Theses

The construct of differentiation of self, a key concept in the family theory of Murray Bowen, is examined with the purpose of testing Bowen's hypothesis that married couples are differentiated to the same degree. The Differentiation of Self Scale was used with 45 recently married couples from St. Louis County ranging in age from 20 to 71. Results of this study demonstrate that there is no significant correlation between the wives' and husbands' scores.

The Effects Of Railroad Deregulation, Patrick H. Murphy Jan 1992

The Effects Of Railroad Deregulation, Patrick H. Murphy

Theses

This thesis focuses on the hypothetical question: Would American railroads meet their obligation to provide freight service at reasonable cost if no regulation restrictions were imposed?

Railroads were originally regarded as great industrial giants spearheading the development of this country . Wild West movies depicted men driving a golden spike where the railroad from the West met the railroad from the East. This was pictured as a very exciting and romantic time in our history.

However, there were too many abuses. In 1887, the Congress decided to control special rates, the pass system, rebates and discrimination, and passed into law …

The Disinhabited Body: A Somatic View Of Personality Development And Psychotherapy, Mecca Antonia Burns Jan 1992

The Disinhabited Body: A Somatic View Of Personality Development And Psychotherapy, Mecca Antonia Burns

Theses

The body's role in personality development. and psychotherapy :is investigated. The "mind/body split" which pervades our culture prevents us from fully experiencing bodily sensation.

This phenomenon is deeply rooted in the psychophysical dualism postulated by Descartes, and chapter one inquires into the reasons why his theories took hold so firmly. There is a prevailing tendency to treat mind and body as separate entities, and I examine the reasons for this. The emotions appear to be a link between body and mind, but this is specifically where resistance can enter in.

In chapter two, we look at the process in terms …

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich Jan 1992

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich

Theses

This thesis will focus on the causes of infant mortality in the United States. The lack of adequate prenatal care will be specifically addressed.

Research has attributed the majority of preventable infant deaths to socio-economic factors as opposed to the lack of technology. Since the percentage of the United States GNP spent on medical care continues to rise without subsequent decreases in infant deaths, it becomes necessary to focus on causal relationship.

Since a nation's infant mortality rate has long been viewed as an indicator of the country's effectiveness in meeting health needs, many areas must be targeted. The importance …

An Investigation Into Price, Quality And Value, And Their Effects On Sales And Profits, John W. Fries Jan 1992

An Investigation Into Price, Quality And Value, And Their Effects On Sales And Profits, John W. Fries

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of promoting price, quality, and value and the effect they have on sales and profits.

Research reveals that promotion of products with price alone has varied short and long-term effects. Most managers and marketers are only concerned with the short-term effect price promotion has on increasing sales. Long-term effects of pricing should be considered because of t heir possible harmful effect on sales and profits. Marketers and managers need to better understand how price promotion affects consumers and their buying habits.

The purpose of this present study is to investigate how companies have …

An Examination Of Attitudes In Females Identified With An Eating Disorder, Iris Jo-Ann Lee

Theses

The main purpose of this study was to investigate attitude demonstrated by participants in an outpatient multidimensional group treatment program for eating disorders. The problem concerned clarifying the attitudinal differences between eating disordered and non-eating disordered females after involvement in a time-limited treatment group. Procedural guidelines of the study were described for two groups designated as 5 eating disordered experimental subjects and 29 non-eating disordered control comparison subjects. Both groups completed the Eating Disorder Inventory, a 64-item self- report inventory which allowed measurement at pretest and posttest intervals. Data from this measure were collected before the beginning of treatment and …

A Simplified Drive-Reinforcement Model For Unsupervised Learning In Artificial Neural Networks, David B. Suits Jan 1992

A Simplified Drive-Reinforcement Model For Unsupervised Learning In Artificial Neural Networks, David B. Suits

Theses

Partly in response to the apparent limitations of explicit symbol processing used by traditional artificial intelligence research, there has been, within the last decade, a growing interest in artificial neural networks. This thesis focuses on the development and testing of a model for describing certain kinds of biological phenomena. The many artificial neural networks available may be classified into three types: (1) self-organizing networks, which have input but no feedback; (2) unsupervised networks, requiring minimal feedback (perhaps a signal indicating success or failure); and (3) supervised models, which employ far more extensive (and, I think, biologically implausible) feedback mechanisms. In …

Sexual Abuse: The Victim's Role In The Incestuous Family System, Margaret Angus Wedbush Jan 1992

Sexual Abuse: The Victim's Role In The Incestuous Family System, Margaret Angus Wedbush

Theses

The present study was an investigation of the incestuous family system. Adult survivors of incest were compared with adults currently receiving treatment for stress . It was hypothesized that the extent of reported assumption of maternal roles within the family system would be significantly higher in the abused sample than in the control sample. A secondary hypothesis was that the degree of assumption of maternal roles would be greater for abused subjects reporting an incapacitated mother (due to alcohol/drug abuse) than for abused subjects not reporting an incapacitated mother.

It was found that there was no significant difference between reported …

Context Sensitive Optical Character Recognition Using Neural Networks And Hidden Markov Models, Steven C. Elliott Jan 1992

Context Sensitive Optical Character Recognition Using Neural Networks And Hidden Markov Models, Steven C. Elliott

Theses

This thesis investigates a method for using contextual information in text recognition. This is based on the premise that, while reading, humans recognize words with missing or garbled characters by examining the surrounding characters and then selecting the appropriate character. The correct character is chosen based on an inherent knowledge of the language and spelling techniques. We can then model this statistically. The approach taken by this Thesis is to combine feature extraction techniques, Neural Networks and Hidden Markov Modeling. This method of character recognition involves a three step process: pixel image preprocessing, neural network classification and context interpretation. Pixel …

Analysis Of Power Factor Correction Converters, Thomas Yeh Jan 1992

Analysis Of Power Factor Correction Converters, Thomas Yeh

Theses

Power Converter with capacitive input filter is a non-linear load to the Utility AC power lines. There are widely used as Switch-Mode Power Supplies in office equipment applications ranging from Personal Computers to Office Printers and Copiers. The distorted input current waveform extracted by the capacitive input filter of the power converters produces unwanted harmonics which propagates to other line powered equipments. The harmonic pollutes the AC lines and interferes with the operations of sensitive line powered equipments. The distorted current waveform also leads to inefficient utilization of the available power from the AC outlet. This is because the AC …

Senior Japanese Tourists To Taiwan And Their Marketing Potential: A Case Study, Nai-Chieh Jessie Chen Jan 1992

Senior Japanese Tourists To Taiwan And Their Marketing Potential: A Case Study, Nai-Chieh Jessie Chen

Theses

For decades, Taiwan's tourism industry enjoyed the great number of Japanese visitors until a few years ago, when the growth rate slowed and even declined. This decline was caused by several factors such as rising price, high appreciation of the New Taiwan dollar, inconvenient visa application procedures, limited airline seats, rising public disorder, and strong competition from neighboring countries. With much money to spend the Japanese tourists were the most welcome group to the world tourism industry. The senior (50 years and older) members among them, in increasing quantity and good financial ability, have become even more desirable among the …

Automated Knowledge Acquisition For Knowledge-Based Systems: Ke-Kit, John Parsons Scott Jan 1992

Automated Knowledge Acquisition For Knowledge-Based Systems: Ke-Kit, John Parsons Scott

Theses

Despite recent progress, knowledge acquisition remains a central problem for the development of intelligent systems. There are many people throughout the world doing studies in this area. However, very few automated techniques have made it to the market place. In this light, the idea of automating the knowledge acquisition process is very appealing and may lead to a break through. Most (if not all) of the approaches and techniques concerning intelligent, expert systems and specifically knowledge-based systems can still be considered in their infancy and definitely do not subscribe to any kind of standards. Many things have yet to be …

Computational Analysis Of Boundary Layer Control By Suction In A Space Transfer Vehicle Engine Turbopump Diffuser, Brian Richard Yoshida Jan 1992

Computational Analysis Of Boundary Layer Control By Suction In A Space Transfer Vehicle Engine Turbopump Diffuser, Brian Richard Yoshida

Theses

Future space missions planned by NASA will be more complex in nature than current missions scheduled as part of the Space Shuttle Program. Examples of future missions include the construction and inhabitance of space stations, orbital transfers, and Lunar/Mars transfers and descents. The Space Transfer Vehicles (STV's) that will perform these missions must have the capability to provide deep-engine throttling thrust. To accomplish this, the turbopumps used to propel the STV's in space must operate at off-design flow rates to provide a wide range of flow outputs. Current state-of-the-art cryogenic fuel and oxidizer turbopump designs can not perform efficiently at …

Computational Techniques In Turan Problems, Jing Zou Jan 1992

Computational Techniques In Turan Problems, Jing Zou

Theses

A Turan set system, T(n, I, k), is a k -uniform hypergraph on n points, such that any subset of / vertices contains at least one edge. The Turan number T{n, l, k) is the minimal number of edges in any Turan set system T(n,l,k). The known nontrivial values of Turan numbers are rare. Using the algorithm turexp for extending T(n, I, k) systems to 7(n+1, I, k) systems and procedures nauty for determining the automorphism group of a graph, the new Turan numbers 7(13, 4, 3), 7(11, 5, 3), 7(12, 5, 3), 7(13, 5, 3) are determined, a new …

Two New Ramsey Numbers, James N. Mcnamara Jan 1992

Two New Ramsey Numbers, James N. Mcnamara

Theses

A graph with many vertices cannot be homogeneous, i.e., for any pair of integers (i,j) all large graphs must contain either a complete subgraph on i vertices or an independent set of size j. The Ramsey number for (i,j) is the smallest integer R such that all graphs with at least R vertices have this property. For example, the (3,3) Ramsey number is 6; if a graph has 6 or more vertices, then is must contain a triangle or an independent set of size 3. The (4,4) Ramsey number is 18, found in 1954 [GG] . The (5,5) Ramsey number …

Theses

The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) has demonstrated its usefulness on a nanometer scale surpassing the resolution of conventional profilometers and optical microscopes. The principle of operation and the instrumentation design of the AFM, as well as some application aspects, are described. Emphasis is placed on the imaging mode of the force microscopy in the regime of attractive forces. A new method which is capable of stabilizing attractive mode operation is introduced, along with analysis of the detection mechanism and evaluation of the system performance. Numerous examples illustrate the applicability of attractive mode AFM to a wide variety of samples. The …

Detection And Estimation Of Outliers In Low-Resolution Saturated Factorial Experiments, George F. Cretekos Jan 1992

Detection And Estimation Of Outliers In Low-Resolution Saturated Factorial Experiments, George F. Cretekos

Theses

The detection and estimation of outliers in a saturated factorial experimental setting is researched and discussed. Methods for detection and estimation are developed and tested in both simulated and "real" data sets. The techniques developed proved themselves useful in both detection and estimation of outlying values. The simulated data sets also showed how an outlier can affect the interpretation of an experiment depending on the number and sizes of active effects and on the amount the outlying value is actually shifted.

Steady-State Oscillations Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Christopher A. Tucher Jan 1992

Steady-State Oscillations Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Christopher A. Tucher

Theses

In this paper, an efficient algorithm is developed for the identification of stable steady-state solutions to periodically forced linear and nonlinear dynamical systems. The developed method is based on mapping techniques introduced by Henri Poincare' and the theory of one-parameter transformation groups. The algorithm successfully identifies initial conditions which give rise to strictly periodic orbits. The technique is demonstrated on selected problems associated with linear as well as nonlinear systems.

User Characteristics In Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Michelle Buckenmeyer Jan 1992

User Characteristics In Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Michelle Buckenmeyer

Theses

The development of individualized educational environments, to facilitate learning for the diverse population of students in today's secondary school system, has become more prevalent with the increased ease of access to computers that many schools are now enjoying. The use of Computer Aided Instruction is becoming more common as a means for individual tutoring. This thesis explores the problem of individualizing this instruction by analyzing the relationship between preferred teaching methods and computer users" personality types, as defined by the Myers-Briggs type indicator and two other "unscientific" user characteristics. The preferred teaching method was analyzed using various criteria, including user …
