Beyond The Binary Opposition Between Collectivism And Individualism: A Reflection On The Concept Of Collective Memory, Dongfeng Tao
Beyond The Binary Opposition Between Collectivism And Individualism: A Reflection On The Concept Of Collective Memory, Dongfeng Tao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since Maurice Halbwachs put forward the concept of collective memory, the relationship between individual memory and collective memory has been under debate. Literary study cannot avoid this issue as literature is a typical field of contestation between collective memory and individual memory. Interestingly, the two representative theories that doubt collective memory have opposite views. Paul Connerton argues that Halbwachs only takes the collective as the restrictive framework for individual memory rather than as the subject of individual memory. Other scholars such as Susan Sontag criticize the concept of collective memory for its overlooking the differences in individual memories and its …

On The Four Forms Of Contemporary Cultural Criticism, Minghua Xiao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the last 30 years, cultural criticism emerged in studies of literature and art thanks to changes in social and cultural context. Some scholars are appealed to interpretative criticism as a result of epistemological interest in the rising popular culture. Some are stimulated to practice cultural criticism by the anxiety about the change of intellectual identity. Some are dedicated to cultural criticism in order to break through disciplinary restraints or to fulfil intellectuals’ role of responding to public concerns. These forms of cultural criticism can be respectively dubbed as “cultural criticism as popular literary criticism,” “cultural criticism as cultural research,” …
Cultural Studies And The Intellectual Genealogy Of Chinese American Scholars: The Controversies On Lydia H. Liu's Study Of The “National Character” And Beyond, Shi Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Lydia H. Liu's criticism on Lu Xun's discourse of national character is not an isolated case in literary criticism, but part of the theoretical nomadism of “translated modernity.” Be it Lydia H. Liu’s conceptualization of “translated modernity,” Leo Ou-fan Lee’s “pursuit of modernity,” David Der-wei Wang’s “repressed modernity,” Rey Chow’s “repressed visuality” or Shu-mei Shih’s “lure of the modern,” the theoretical purport of theirs tends to examine the complex relationship between Chinese literature and politics in the 20th century from the perspective of power criticism, and reflect on the “repressive regime” behind the modern nation-state. The formation of this knowledge …
Shock And Immersion: The Complex Aesthetic Experience Of Chinese New Mainstream Film, Xiaofang Lu
Shock And Immersion: The Complex Aesthetic Experience Of Chinese New Mainstream Film, Xiaofang Lu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The new mainstream cinema in China, instead of providing a simple mixture or hybrid of artistic styles and genres, advocates that audiovisual spectacles created by film technologies should "break into" the established experience of audiences and their customary protective mechanism of consciousness so as to produce a psychological strike. Meanwhile, new mainstream cinema also creates an aesthetic experience, through which the audience are drawn deeply into the film thanks to their surrealistic sensory and emotional engagement. The surrealistic sensory experience brings "shock" to the audience, while emotional identification results in "immersion." Provided with such aesthetic effects, the new mainstream film, …
The Image Of Characters In Twentieth-Century Chinese Fiction, Zidong Xu
The Image Of Characters In Twentieth-Century Chinese Fiction, Zidong Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Scholars generally believe that the most important characters in modern Chinese literature are intellectuals and peasants, and their relationship is central to the literary theme of "reforming national character". However, in the late Qing Dynasty and contemporary fictions, officials become the third important image of characters. The complicated triangular relationship between intellectuals, peasants and officials in fictions is since formed. If the relationship between intellectuals and peasants can be summarized as "enlightenment and national salvation", the process of "mutual transformation" between intellectuals and officials in twentieth-century Chinese fictions and the historical evolution of the "contradictory and interdependent" relationship between peasants …
The Modern Origin Of Animation And The Intermediality Of Animation Art, Xueqin Feng
The Modern Origin Of Animation And The Intermediality Of Animation Art, Xueqin Feng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Giannaberto Bendazzi, an Italian historian of animation, believes that Emile Cohl and his Fantasmagorie are the origins of animation art. Bendazzi's view is problematic as he considered the origins of animation and film share the same genealogy, ignoring the significant differences on media basis. From the perspective of intermediality of art, Emile Reynaud's Luminous Pantomimes presents the media difference between animation and film, representing a heterogeneous origin of animation in the modern era. Analyses of this origin will provide an insight into the ontology of animation, which is a cross-media art.
On The Edition Criticism Of New-Era Novels And Its Academic Value, Xianhai Luo
On The Edition Criticism Of New-Era Novels And Its Academic Value, Xianhai Luo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Different versions of novels in the new era through the writers' revision or rewriting has not been paid due academic attention. Different versions of novels are produced in three periods particularly. Among these revisions and rewritings, the "substantive textual variants" center round expressions that are politically sensitive or that are concerned with sex scenes. Other changes are made concerning artistic perfection and socio-historical requirements. Apart from political factors, literary awards, commercialization, film and television adaptation, copyright, regional culture, network and new media, as well as changes in the context of globalization, are also contributing reasons for textual modification and variation. …
The Compilation Of Anthologies And The Theoretical Issues In Constructing Contemporary "Study Of The Literary Selection", Yong Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In order to construct a contemporary "study of literary selection", we should center on the compilation of anthologies while taking into consideration of other mechanisms concerned with the selection of literary works, so as to construct a multi-dimensional system through multi-layered analysis of the "study of literary selection". The multi-layered structure of contemporary "study of literary selection" allows for its departure from the study of "The Selection of Refined Literature", and manifests as the important features of its modernity as well the anxiety of modernity. An investigation of contemporary "study of literary selection" informs our understanding of literary canonization.
The Crisis And Future Of National Memory In The Digital Age, Jingrong Zhao
The Crisis And Future Of National Memory In The Digital Age, Jingrong Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The concept of national memory can be interpreted in two ways, either as "memory about a nation" (or "a nation as a kind of memory") or as "a nation that remembers" (or "a nation's memory"). With a reference to nation which could be understood as country, native land, nation, and state, the national memory also unfolds as memory of China in geopolitical sense, memory of the native land in cultural and psychological sense, memory of nation in ethnographic sense, and memory of the state in political sense. The signification of the national memory changes in different contexts. There are two …
Articulation Theory And The Evolution Of Cultural Studies, Dongli Yang
Articulation Theory And The Evolution Of Cultural Studies, Dongli Yang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Articulation theory has special value for cultural studies. This article discusses the evolution of the concept "articulation" from its origin through Ernesto Laclau to Stuart Hall, and goes on to portray articulation theory’s developing landscape in cultural studies – from "articulation", "double articulation" to "triple articulation". The developments of articulation theory have updated foundational concepts in cultural studies, helping it break the conflicts between "culturalism" and "structuralism". However, articulation theory has also complicated the scene of cultural studies, as it overemphasizes the agency of audiences in decoding activities and overly relies on language's expressive logic in the interpretation of cultural …

Post-Structural Theories And Chinese Feminist Criticism: On The Theorization Of Women's “Subjectivity” In The Cultural Studies Of Socialist China, Xi Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Centering on the conceptualization of "subjectivity," this article first traces the post-structural theories' impact on as well as their complex relationship with Western feminism. It then explores the development of the theorization of “women 's subjectivity" in academic research on Chinese women and gender discourses in socialist China from the 1980s. By examining the application of three influential theorists, Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, and Judith Butler, in the Chinese context, this article intends to show the complex genealogy of "appropriating" post-structural theories for different agendas of contemporary Chinese feminist criticism. Some scholars integrated post-structural ideas into liberal-humanist discourses; some employed …

A Study Of The Phenomenon Of The Quasi-Peach Blossom Spring And The Poetry In The Late-Qing Dynasty, Qihua Sun, Shijin Luo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The image of "The Peach Blossom Spring" created by Tao Yuanming (365?-427) became a motif since the Liang dynasty in Chinese ancient literature. The reception of the Peach Blossom Spring had shown two dimensions of the nothingness and the concreteness during the Tang and Song dynasties. However, toward the late Qing dynasty, the gradual appearance of quasi-Peach Blossom Springs and the poeticization of them, perhaps due to the social turmoil, especially brought by the Taiping Civil War. The understanding of the unrealistic vision of the Peach Blossom Spring and the wish for it during the turmoil constructed the mindset of …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
During the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, there emerged in large numbers of paintings under the title of Ten-Thousand-Mile Yangtze River. On the one hand, these paintings with inscribed poems and essays by elite literati collectively shaped the image of the Yangtze River, and established a cultural community with regional and historical identity centering on the Yangtze River. This greatly strengthened the sense of national identity and its presence. On the other hand, these paintings were collected into classified books as encyclopedic references during the late Ming dynasty, and became cultural products for mass consumption. Through copying, reproduction and dissemination …
Letters On Literature And The Internalized Drive For Literary Debates In The Ming Dynasty, Hua Ye, Huan Du
Letters On Literature And The Internalized Drive For Literary Debates In The Ming Dynasty, Hua Ye, Huan Du
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As one of the traditional forms of literary criticism since the Han and Wei dynasties, letters on literature played an important role in the establishment of Chinese literary criticism framework. Based on the writers' identities and attitudes, these letters can be grouped into "the presenting type", "the replying type" and "the dialogue type". The theoretical nature of the epistolary style and the contextual constraints resulted from its reciprocal relationship, promoted in-depth scholarly dialogue and avoided the possibility of forcible reinterpretation of the text by later generations. Primary contents in the literary correspondences shifted from summaries of writing experience, reviews of …
On The "Portrait Paintings" In The Late-Ming Fictions And Xiqu, Yaping Cai, Guofu Cheng
On The "Portrait Paintings" In The Late-Ming Fictions And Xiqu, Yaping Cai, Guofu Cheng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Portrait paintings were prominent in ancient Chinese fictions and xiqu (traditional Chinese opera), and the close relationships between them have not been duly explored. In late Ming-Dynasty fictions and xiqu, portrait paintings have been used in eighteen fictions and xiqu to construct the plots. These paintings usually gave a frontal image of the characters, with occasional glamorization for a unified representation of both the appearance and the spirit to achieve the integration of the character with the scenery. Three developments in the late-Ming Dynasty may explain why portrait paintings were prominent in the fictions and xiqu: the revival of figure …
From Function To Semantics: History And Theories Of The Picture Frame, Yuan Gao
From Function To Semantics: History And Theories Of The Picture Frame, Yuan Gao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As a key element linking art history and art theory, the frame inherently has both historical and theoretical implications; its historical transformation, either in form or conceptualization, is inextricably linked to methodologies and theoretical discourses in art history. This study begins with the historical transformation of a form and its function, and discusses, combining the discourse of various theorists, the generation and development of the picture frame, especially its application to art history. It also introduces theoretical perspectives from the twentieth century on the shift and interdisciplinary significance of the concept of the picture frame in the field of visual …

In so doing, he revisits the founding fathers of cultural studies and points to a radical utopia by defamiliarizing the naturalness of the here and now.

On The Perspectives Of Gender Representation And Ethical Contradiction In Women's Self-Portraits, Chenguang Ling
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Women's self-portraits demonstrate female artists' unique pursuit in the constructions of self-image, performances of interpersonal relationship, and means of expression. Female artists' special connection to mirrors during the process of self-portrayal and their reflection on this relationship are an important approach to understand feminist ideas. The contradictions and conflicts …
The Art Of Guan Hanqing's Dramaturgic Structure, Jianzhong Xu
The Art Of Guan Hanqing's Dramaturgic Structure, Jianzhong Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The 15 existing plays by the Yuan-Dynasty playwright Guan Hanqing reflect the playwright's originality in processing subject matter through transformation of conventional themes and his realistic concerns with profound thoughts. Guan Hanqing's plays, literally variety dramas in Chinese, demonstrate a variety of structural types with different dramaturgic techniques. The plot from suspense, misunderstanding, and discovery to return is well adapted into plays with each act comprising two sections, and this greatly promotes the expressiveness of the plays. His story is strengthened by his thoughtful construction of plot with added sections that broke through the "one-play-of-four-act" convention. In Guan's ingenious casting, …
The Substance Of Wei Xi's "Genuine Air" And Its Theoretical Implications, Zebao Zhu
The Substance Of Wei Xi's "Genuine Air" And Its Theoretical Implications, Zebao Zhu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Wei Xi(1624-1681), an early Qing-Dynasty prose theorist, proposed the concept of "genuine air(zhen-qi)," and it is an important component to his literary theory. In essence, the concept highlights author's personality and centers round author's reason, while it also implicitly promotes cultural pluralism. With this concept, Wei's theory framework can refrain from overreliance on the rules, reason and knowledge. The political implication of "genuine air" respond to the socio-cultural background in which the Ming-Dynasty subjects tried to reflect the fall of their nation, and his theory also embodies his intention of upholding mores of the intellectuals through changing literary mode. Wei …
Incorporation Of Tang Short Stories Into Song Poetic Verses, Zhenqian Zhang
Incorporation Of Tang Short Stories Into Song Poetic Verses, Zhenqian Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Tang short stories (xiaoshuo) have had an important influence on the creation of poetic verses (ci) in the Song dynasty, but this literary phenomenon received little academic discussion. The most salient manifestation of such influence is textual, including poetic verse's lyric patterns, titles, sequences, and main content. Additionally, writers of poetic verses in the Song dynasty composed their works by tailoring, rewriting and selecting verses, literary quotations, characters, and plot from Tang short stories. This kind of incorporation was further motivated by the sufficiency of short stories and their popularity among Song literati, as well as the practice of crossing …
Changxieyao And Changjiedeng: Prosodic Theory And The Evolvement Of Five-Character Poetry In The Early Tang Dynasty, Hongqiang Xiang
Changxieyao And Changjiedeng: Prosodic Theory And The Evolvement Of Five-Character Poetry In The Early Tang Dynasty, Hongqiang Xiang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Changxieyao was a common prosodic phenomenon in the five-character poetry of the Six Dynasties. After the transformation by Xie Tiao and He Xun, the style of Changjiedeng became more mature, but the number of poems written in this style was still small, hence the lack of diversity in the prosody of poetry. Since 663 CE, the situation began to change: Lu Zhaolin, Cui Rong, Du Shenyan, among many others started to use Changjiedeng and Changjiedeng interchangeably in their five-character poems, which enriched prosody in poetic writing. This move was related to Yuan Jing's theory of Changxieyao and Changjiedeng. Ever since, …
Expressing Feeling Through Scenery: On The Fashion Of Travel Among Literati And Its Influence On Xiqu During The Late Ming Period, Ji Yang

The model of portraying travel experiences in xiqu during the late-Ming period not only accorded with the requirement of xiqu's narrative mechanism, but also displayed its aesthetic characteristics and artistic features.
On The Formation Mechanism Of Contemporary Discourse On The Public, Chonghong Luo
On The Formation Mechanism Of Contemporary Discourse On The Public, Chonghong Luo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The formation of contemporary discourse on the public is embedded in the cultural context of humanism and post-revolution, taking culture as the main criterion to divide the elite and the public. The era of consumerism in which revolutionary discourse is absent is characterized by the formation of discourse contestation in a multicultural field. As consumerism gradually shows itself in the public culture, traditional humanistic intellectuals' criticism of it leads to a discourse contestation between the traditional elite and the contemporary public. Meanwhile, the sustained prosperity of popular culture and the developing theorization of cultural studies result in a gradual shift …
