Pemahaman makna tersirat bermaksud memahami maksud dalaman (tersirat) sesuatu ujaran iaitu maksud yang berbeza dari makna linguistik atau teks. Lenneberg mengatakan bahawa kebolehan kanak-kanak memahami ujaran telah wujud sebelum kanak-kanak boleh bertutur lagi. Lantaran itu, adalah tidak mustahil jika pemahaman makna tersirat juga telah wujud dalam diri kanak-kanak seawal usia tiga tahun lagi. This thesis investigates the complex and vicious circle of poverty and Human Immune Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (AIDS) in Sudan. The study focuses on selected dimensions of poverty that increase the risk and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, which is pertinent as poverty can hamper mitigating efforts. Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk mengenal pasti strategi-strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh murid-murid, untuk mengetahui fungsi sesuatu strategi itu digunakan dan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi sesuatu strategi komunikasi digunakan semasa pembelajaran Sains dalam Bahasa Inggeris. Five masters’ students from the University of Malaya participated in the study. The aim of this study is to find out what kind of shifts exist in the translation of inter-sentential conjunctive relations in the novel, Animal Farm, from English to Hausa based on Catford‘s (1965) notion of shifts in translation. The two novels used as the sources of data for this study were the source text in English, Animal Farm and its target language translation in Hausa, Gandun Dabbobi. This study focuses on a group of Chinese parents from the upper-middle class who are raising their children bilingually. It uses the lens of family language policy (FLP) to investigate the process of raising a bilingual child, how parents perceive language(s) and how their beliefs transform into actual language practices and management at home for their child’s language development. A study on the characteristics of ‘child directed speech’ in the discourse between a preschool teacher and 12 preschool children in a Malaysian preschool was conducted to analyse the features associated in a classroom-oriented ‘child directed speech’. Pilot study was done pre-recording to anticipate difficulties that might be encountered in the course of conducting the study and in the process of video-recording the discourse happening between the teacher and the preschool children. People who use drugs (PWUD) are a marginalised group of people in Malaysia. They experience multiple denunciation including being homeless, having limited educational and career opportunities, experiencing fear and paranoia, having medical issues, being exposed to street violence, and learning to be helpless. While it is undeniable that PWUD (albeit not all) engage in crime to fuel their addiction and to survive, it is argued in this research that the relatively persistent engagement of semantic characterisations of PWUD in mainstream news perpetuates a societal conception that PWUD are dangerous pariahs.
