Negotiation Of Meaning In L2 Vocabulary Acquisition In Synchronous Computer-Mediated And Face-To-Face Contexts / Cheah Kah Mun, Kah Mun Cheah
Student Works (2010-2019)
Learning the vocabulary of a language is one of the essential components of learning of a second language (L2). In a language classroom, time factor prompts most of the teachers to conduct explicit vocabulary teaching which requires the learners to memorise a large amount of vocabulary (Alemi, Sarab & Lari, 2012). But, according to Cervatiuc (2008), although the students try to recite the new vocabulary repeatedly, it is impossible to memorise a large amount of vocabulary. Thus, the negotiation of meaning is recognised as a good alternative method in learning vocabulary (Smith, 2003; Varonis and Gass, 1985). The mixed-method design …

Feature Extraction From Natural Language To Aid Requirements Reuse In Software Product Lines Engineering / Noor Hasrina Bakar, Bakar Noor Hasrina
Student Works (2010-2019)
Product Lines Engineering (SPLE) is a systematic approach towards realising software reuse. Among important software assets to be reused includes architectural documents, test cases, source codes and also requirements. Requirements Reuse (RR) in SPLE is the process of systematically reusing previously defined requirements for an earlier software product and applying them to a new, slightly different product within similar domain. SRS documents are not easily accessible, therefore many researchers in this area opted to use other forms of requirements including product brochures, user manuals and software reviews when SRS is not available. Unfortunately, to extract reusable features from natural language …

Learners’ Perceptions Of Learning English Through Metaphors / Ervinna Luk Yee Woon, Luk Yee Woon Ervinna
Student Works (2010-2019)
Learners and teachers often hold deep beliefs about language learning (Mariani, 2010) resulting in complexities based on attitudes, experiences and expectations (Riley, 2009). Effective language learning can potentially take place when the learners’ needs are met by the teachers through different classroom approaches. In the context of postgraduate teaching, learners come from various nationalities. Therefore, it is crucial to understand their perceptions on what constitutes language learning process and language teachers’ roles, especially in various socio-cultural educational settings (Borg, 2006) to ensure successful implementation of theoretical teaching methodologies (Sykes, 2011). Perception studies, however, revealed that examining the metaphors used by …

Click Chemistry Derived Sugar-Based Surfactants With Various Shapes: Synthesis And Physical Studies / Tammar Hussein Ali, Ali Tammar Hussein
Student Works (2010-2019)
Surfactants are important bulk chemicals with diverse applications in various fields, ranging from food over detergents to industrial products like lubricants. Growing environmental awareness and limitation of petrochemical resources have shifted the focus towards the utilization of renewable resources. Good candidates are sugar based surfactants. A series of new surfactants were prepared by click chemistry using functionalized glucosides as the hydrophilic domain. Variations of the molecular structure led to three different shapes, i.e. Y-shape, X-shape and reverse Y-shape, referring to the geometric arrangements of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains, respectively. Since the shape of a surfactant affects its molecular assembly …

A Trust Model For Advisor Networks In Multi-Agent Environments / Elham Majd, Elham Majd
Student Works (2010-2019)
Multi-agent systems can break interactions in distributed and heterogeneous environments. One of the fundamental challenges in such settings is that agents can enter and leave the system at will; hence malicious agents may take advantage of others by behaving in an untrustworthy way. In this case, if an agent wants to interact with unknown provider agents, they need to request other agents to advise a trustworthy provider. The crucial issues are then how to rely on the information provided by advisor agents. A trust mechanism was proposed that measures and analyzes the trust value of advisors. In fact, the proposed …
