The present study seeks to provide a practical and descriptive structural grammar in terms of tense and mood and to identify the areas of difficulty encountered by Persian EFL learners as well. The verb is one of the main parts of speech in a language and the correct use of tense has an important role in language learning and communication in the tense languages like English and Persian. In the CA, the verbal forms …

Some Aspects Of Spiritual Thoughts Of Shaykh ‘Abd Al-Ṣamad Al-Falimbānī (D. 1243/1828) / Nik Roskiman Bin Abdul Samad, Abdul Samad Nik Roskiman

Student Works (2010-2019)

It is commonly believed that in the early phase of Islamization of the Malay Archipelago, Islam was presented to the indigenous people in the form of syncretistic Sufism. The version of Sufism that had been widely propagated then was the wujūdiyyah doctrine identical to the waḥdat al-wujūd attributed to Ibn ‘Arabī (d. 637/1240). Early Malay scholars like Hamzah al-Fansūrī (d.1015/1607) and Shams al-Dīn al-Sumatrānī (d. 1039/1630) were among the forerunners of this doctrine. This group was vehemently opposed by Orthodox Sunni scholars represented by people like Nūr al-Dīn al-Ranīrī (d.1068/1658) and moderately by ‘Abd al-Ra‘ūf al-Sinkilī (d. 1104/1693). Around the …

Query Proof Structure Caching For Incremental Evaluation Of Tabled Prolog Programs / Taher Muhammad Ali, Ali Taher Muhammad

Student Works (2010-2019)

PROLOG is the most well known, widely used programming language for logic programming. PROLOG is a programming language that uses a small set of basic mechanisms to create surprisingly powerful programs. These mechanisms are pattern-matching, treebased data structuring and backtracking. PROLOG is used for the development of scheduling systems, knowledge systems, expert systems and many other applications. However, being goal-driven (query driven) PROLOG’S query engine suffers from some well-known problems such as susceptibility to infinite looping, repeated subcomputation and unsatisfactory semantics of negation. These limitations have been addressed by the tabled extensions (TLP) to PROLOG evaluation. The main idea of …

An Exploratory Study On Utilization Of Organic Farming For Sustainable Agriculture At Selected Farms In Malaysia And India / Prasad A/L Vasudevon, Prasad Vasudevon Jan 2013

An Exploratory Study On Utilization Of Organic Farming For Sustainable Agriculture At Selected Farms In Malaysia And India / Prasad A/L Vasudevon, Prasad Vasudevon

Student Works (2010-2019)

Industrial agriculture has become the prominent agriculture system worldwide. In this system, farmers have become less dependent to environmental processes in shaping food production systems. They begin to adapt monoculture farming and rely on increasing quantities of agrochemicals, automated machineries, hybrid seeds and, more recently, Genetically modified crops. However, these practices have caused environmental consequences such as depletion of biodiversity, soil degradation, pollution and global warming. Furthermore concentration and vertical integration of corporate undermines farmer’s participation in the agrifood system. Farmers merely act as technology adopters and passive producers. In this system, farmers’ knowledge and innovations are impeded. In addition …

Biodiversity Database / Agan Adun Shashi Mohan, Shashi Mohan Agan Adun

Student Works (2010-2019)

There is a growing interest in academia to provide biodiversity data to both the scientific community and the public. Biodiversity Informatics Laboratory Portal was developed to provide useful information to both scientists, who can easily navigate and find all parasite related resources in one place, and bioinformaticians, who are provided with interoperable resources containing data which can be mined and integrated. This thesis demonstrates how Web service technology provide the ability to create a dynamic integration of multiple heterogenous databases while maintaining the existing database schemas and not losing control over the administration of the databases.

Scientific Realism, Relativism And The Problem Of Theory Choice In Science / Tee Sim Hui, Sim Hui Tee

Student Works (2010-2019)

Theory choice in science is a central and fascinating issue in the literature of philosophy of science that has been argued from different perspectives. One of the important problems in the thesis of theory choice is the rationality of theory choice. Interestingly, philosophers of science incline to defend the rationality of theory choice, regardless of their philosophical standpoint, by demonstrating that the criteria of choice are plausible and rational in promoting scientific progress. This study attempts to discuss and analyze the implications of the thesis of theory choice in scientific realism and relativism, which is a lacuna awaited to be …

Quorum Sensing And Quorum Quenching Abilities Of Selected Bacteria Isolated From Antarctic / See-Too Wah Seng, Wah Seng See-Too Jan 2013

Quorum Sensing And Quorum Quenching Abilities Of Selected Bacteria Isolated From Antarctic / See-Too Wah Seng, Wah Seng See-Too

Student Works (2010-2019)

Quorum sensing (QS) is a phenomenon which refers to bacterial cell-to-cell communication in a population manner. QS regulates diverse activities in bacteria. Bacteria that possess QS activity communicate through secreted signal molecules or autoinducer. The Gram-negative bacteria and archaeon use acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) as a QS signal to achieve regulation through the luxI-luxR homolog system, wheareas Gram-positive bacteria use small peptides as autoinducers. Some of the Proteobacteria use quinolone compound as signaling molecules. Quorum quenching (QQ) on the other hand refers to interference of QS that inactivates the signaling molecules. Even though QS and QQ were extensively studied in …

Probabilistic Properties And Statistical Inference For A Family Of Generalised And Related Distributions / Liew Kian Wah, Kian Wah Liew Jan 2013

Probabilistic Properties And Statistical Inference For A Family Of Generalised And Related Distributions / Liew Kian Wah, Kian Wah Liew

Student Works (2010-2019)

Three generalised distributions are studied in this thesis from different aspects. The Hurwitz-Lerch zeta distribution (HLZD) that generalises the logarithmic distribution and a class of distributions that follows the power law is considered. To investigate the effects of parameters on the stochastic properties of the HLZD, stochastic orders between members in this large family are established. A relationship between the tail behaviours of the HLZD and that of a class of generalised logarithmic distribution is highlighted. The HLZD has shown good flexibilities in empirical modelling. A robust probability generating function based estimation method using Hellinger-type divergence is implemented in data-fitting …
