OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis among Saudi postmenopausal women with non-insulin dependent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: The study was carried out at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from February 2000 to September 2002. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and femoral neck using dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA; Lunar Wisconsin), were performed in 104 postmenopausal Saudi women with T2DM, and 101 postmenopausal non-diabetic women (control). OBJECTIVE: To compare the lifestyle related risk factors for breast cancer such as physical activity, cigarette smoking, the use of contraceptive pills and increased body weight between non-familial and familial breast cancer females in Jordan. METHODS: This study was carried out in the Kingdom of Jordan during the period 2000 through to 2002. Risk Factors Of Major Noncommunicable Diseases In Bahrain. The Need For A Surveillance System, Randah R. Hamadeh

Saudi Medical Journal

Noncommunicable diseases NCDs are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in Bahrain. The review examines the prevalence of risk factors of major NCDs from the available literature and determines the impact of the rapid socio economic changes on their burden. It further recommends ways of improving their reporting and monitoring. Smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, physical activity and nutrition are considered. The review points out that data on some of the factors is available but deficient for others. The call for the establishment of an integrated surveillance system using the World Health Organization STEPwise approach is stressed.

The objective of this paper is to report on the indications and yield of endoscopy. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of data of all patients below 18 years of age who underwent upper GIT endoscopy from 1414 H (1993 G) through to 1424 H (2002 G) over a 10-year period at King Khaled University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the characteristics and trends of colorectal cancer registered in Aden Cancer Registry. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all registered cancers (1735) was performed at Aden Cancer Center, University of Aden, Aden, Yemen from the years 1997-2001, to describe colorectal cancers with regards to age, sex and residency distribution, subsites and histopathology, and incidence rates. RESULTS: The results indicate that digestive system cancers are the most common cancers (17.1%); and colorectal cancer (28%) is the most common of these. OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk factors of protein energy malnourishment (PEM) among 0-5 year old children in South Batinah region, Oman. Malignant duodenocolic fistulas are the most rare and evolutive complication of colonic cancer due to their rapid nutritional disturbances and difficult surgical management. This case report details a 23-year-old female who presented with diarrhea, anorexia, weight loss, anemia and abdominal pain. A series of examinations showed a transverse colon carcinoma with a malignant duodenocolic fistula and direct infiltration of the right lobe of the liver. The patient underwent extended right hemicolectomy with wide local excision of the duodenum and segmental hepatic resection. Postoperative recovery was uneventful. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on indices of oxidative stress and lipid profiles in maternal and cord blood samples. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 40 normal pregnant women and 46 women with GDM during the period 1998 through to 1999 at the Armed Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. OBJECTIVE: Internet use has grown considerably in recent years throughout the world, particularly among young people. This study aimed at assessing Internet use among high school students. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study involving 246 students in 7 classes representing first, second, and third year students (754 persons) at a high school in Ankara, Turkey during March 2001. An Internet use questionnaire comprising 34 questions was used. RESULTS: It was found that 86.5% of the students used the Internet at home. This article attempts to define a complicated, yet not rare disease of the neonate, which presents with extreme hypoxemia due to increased pulmonary vascular resistance, resulting in diversion of the pulmonary venous blood through persistent fetal channels, namely ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale. Pathophysiology, diagnostic approach and the various modalities of management are analyzed. Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn is multi-factorial, which is reflected in the management as well. OBJECTIVE: To identify the distribution of Candida species causing bloodstream infections. METHODS: This study was conducted at the Armed Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. All cases of candidemia from the period 1996 through to 2002 were retrospectively identified through the records from the Department of Clinical Microbiology. RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety-four candidemic episodes were identified, 176 (59.9%) occurred in the intensive care units (ICUs), 32 (10.9%) medical, 30 (10.2%) surgical wards, 24 (8%) from patients with hematologic malignancies and 15 (5%) from pediatric wards. Necrolytic migratory erythema was first described in 1942 in a patient with pancreatic islet cell carcinoma. The disease can, however, have other etiologies including nutritional dermatoses. Here, we describe the clinicopathological picture of a 7-year-old female patient who presented with necrolytic migratory erythema which we believe is secondary to a rare combination of zinc deficiency and propionic acidemia.
