Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To measure the plasma oxidant, lipid peroxidation and antioxidants, ascorbate, to magnify the prooxidants and antioxidants status as a marker of pre-eclampsia. METHODS: Included in the study were 50 preeclamptic and 100 normotensive pregnant women of singleton gestations in their third trimester, presented in Allavi Hospitals in Ardabil province of Iran from August 2004 to April 2005. Among these patients plasma malonaldehyde (MDA) and vitamin C concentration were analyzed. Blood samples (5 ml) were collected aseptically in heparin bulb. Spectrophotometric methods were employed to determine the plasma concentrations of vitamin C. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences software was …

Type 1 Diabetes-Related Epidemiological, Clinical And Laboratory Findings. An Evaluation With Special Regard To Autoimmunity In Children, Gulay Karaguzel, Seda Ozer, Sema Akcurin, Doga Turkkahraman, Iffet Bircan
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate our data related with epidemiologic features, clinical presentation, and laboratory findings in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) and to compare specific characteristics of immune-mediated subtype (DM 1A) with idiopathic one (DM 1B). METHODS: We classified 115 children with DM1 according to the presence (DM 1A, n=77) or absence (DM 1B, n=38) of diabetes-related autoantibodies in Akdeniz University Hospital, Turkey from January 2000 to December 2005. RESULTS: A total of 43 patients (37%) in the whole group, had onset of DM1 during the winter months and the lowest frequency occurred in summer (p<0.005). The duration of breast-feeding, introduction time of cow9s milk, and seasonal distribution of birth-month or onset of disease did not significantly differ in both groups. When compared with patients who had no documented honeymoon period, the patients who had a documented honeymoon period had lower HbA1c levels (p<0.01) at the onset. A large percentage of patients with DM 1A were positive for glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GAD65). CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference between patients with DM 1A and DM 1B with respect to epidemiologic features, and clinical presentation suggested that these factors do not play a major role either in creating a disease-initiating effect or in the development of islet autoimmunity. However, determination of GAD65 with HbA1c levels at the onset of the disease may ensure some useful information regarding clinical course.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is an association between fatty diet induced obesity and spleen enlargement by means of Cavalieri principle, unbiased stereological method and light microscopic examination. METHODS: In this study, we used 16 adult female Sprague Dawley rats, weighing between 150-200 g. All animals were obtained from the Ataturk University Experimental Research and Applying Center, Turkey in 2005. We performed rat models, fed with normal or high-fat diet for duration of 3 months. After this controlled nutritional process, spleens are removed from all anesthetized rats and performed by routine histological process. Stereologically, we estimated the spleen volumes in …

The Role Of Human Papillomavirus Infection In Prostate Cancer, Jaudah A. Al-Maghrabi
Saudi Medical Journal
Human papillomavirus HPV is the cause of the most common sexually transmitted diseases STDs of viral etiology worldwide. High-risk HPVs are the etiological agents of cervical and other anogenital malignancies and low-risk HPVs induce only benign genital warts. Since high-risk HPVs have been shown to possess oncogenic potential, an association between HPV infection and prostatic carcinoma Pca has been suggested. Some authors demonstrated that HPV infection play an important role in the pathogenesis of Pca. Active research is ongoing to highlight the mechanisms by which HPV involved in the development of cancer. The aim of this article is to review …

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of and the risk factors for Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in a primary health care setting in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study of Saudi patients aged >/= 45 years, who attended the primary health care center at King Khalid University Hospital between February 2006 and March 2006. A pre-designed questionnaire was used for each patient. Peripheral arterial disease was diagnosed, if the Ankle-Brachial index by Doppler were <0.90 and if the patient had signs or symptoms suggestively for PAD. Prevalence was estimated with 95% confidence intervals (CI), and multivariable logistics regression analyses were preformed to identify factors associated with PAD. RESULTS: A total of 471 patients were recruited. The mean age was 56 years and 32.3% were women. The prevalence of PAD was 11.7% (95% CI: 8.9-14.9%), and 92.7% of them were asymptomatic. Patients with PAD were slightly older than patients without PAD, suffered more often from diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, smoking, cerebrovascular event, and coronary artery disease. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of and risk factors for PAD in Saudi Arabia seem to be higher. A nationwide screening program is needed to confirm these results.

So we studied the effect of radiotherapy on nutritional status, weight changes, dietary intake, serum zinc and copper levels. METHODS: During the period of October to March 2005, 45 cancer patients who referred to the Radiotherapy Center, Imam Khomeini Hospital, Iran were recruited. We assessed the nutritional status of patients using Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) questionnaire. Patients on the basis of location of radiotherapy classified to mediastinum, head and neck and pelvic groups. Changes in dietary intake (using 24-hour recall method) and body …

The tumor was invading the penis and lower part of abdominal wall including bilateral groin lymph nodes. Histological examination revealed mature and immature teratoma. Further investigations showed no evidence of any metastatic lesions apart from a solitary pulmonary nodule on the right side of the chest which proved by ultra sonic guide fine needle aspiration biopsy. Radical excisions of the tumor including the shaft of the penis, combined with bilateral block dissection of the inguinal nodes and resection …

Prevalence And Severity Of Anemia In Pediatric Hemodialysis Patients., Afshin Azhir, Jafar Nasiri, Alaleh Gheisari
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and severity of anemia, and to identify independent predictors for anemia in children on hemodialysis. METHODS: We conducted this cross sectional study on 25 children aged 7-20 years receiving hemodialysis from September 2005 to January 2006 in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran. RESULTS: A total of 22 (82%) patients had hemoglobin (Hb) level of <11 g/dL (anemia) and 12 (48%) patients had Hb values <8 g/dL (severe anemia). The mean age was 15.5 ± 3.7 years. Mean time on hemodialysis was 20.44 ± 15.25 months. Anemia was more common and severe among children who were on dialysis <6 months. There was an inverse relation between severity of anemia and duration of hemodialysis (r=-0.465, p=0.019). Nearly all patients were treated with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO). Children with severe anemia received a slightly higher dose of erythropoietin (r=0.202 p=0.09). There was a correlation between serum albumin and Hb level (r=0.511, p=0.01). Intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels were >200 pg/mL in 16 patients (66%) and >400 pg/mL in 9 patients (37.5%). There was a reverse correlation between iPTH level >200 pg/mL and Hb level (r=-0.505, p=0.046). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of anemia in our study appears to be …11>
