OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the changes in pulmonary volumes during and after Islamic fasting. METHODS: It is a cohort study conducted on 117 healthy subjects selected on a random basis from employees, professors and students of Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, between December 1999 and January 2000. All of them underwent spirometry 10 days prior to Ramadan, 2 times during Ramadan, and one time 10 days post-Ramadan. OBJECTIVES: To establish reference growth charts for Saudi children and adolescents. METHODS: Multi-stage probability sampling of a cross-section of Saudi children and adolescents residing in all 13 regions of the Kingdom. Family interviews, and physical examinations of children and adolescents from birth to 19 years of age were conducted over a 2-year period (2004-2005). Only healthy children and adolescents were included for the measurement of length/stature, weight, and head circumference. All measurements were performed by trained physicians and nurses according to World Health Organization guidelines. OBJECTIVES: To detect and compare the degree of malnutrition as well as the anthropometric and biochemical abnormalities among male and female patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out at hemodialysis units in 7 Jordanian hospitals, between 2004 - 2005. Two hundred and seventeen ESRD outpatients who underwent hemodialysis were recruited using the convenience-sampling technique. A subjective global assessment (SGA) was used to assess the degree of malnutrition in both male and female patients. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were also assessed in all patients. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of major and minor congenital malformations among liveborn infants at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Estimation of risk factors were also evaluated. METHODS: Between March 2004 and May 2005, a total of 5356 babies born at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, were enrolled in this study for malformations. Details of cases were recorded after parents9 interviews, clinical, radiological, and laboratory evaluations. RESULTS: One hundred and forty-seven (27.06/1000 livebirth) and 13 (2.39/1000 birth) stillbirth had congenital anomalies. OBJECTIVE: To study the main causes of fistula, and to determine the factors related to a successful treatment. METHODS: From November 2002 to October 2005, a total of 70 consecutive patients with enterocutaneous fistula in Gastroenterology and Hepatology Teaching Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq, were studied prospectively. Fifty-two patients received total parenteral nutrition. Internal gastrointestinal fistula, and pure pancreatic and biliary fistula were excluded from this study. RESULTS: In 68 patients, the fistula developed postoperatively, the most common primary cause was missile injury (42%), and 2 patients have fistula that developed spontaneously. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of flour fortification with folic acid on the incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs) in babies. We also report the pattern of NTDs, and we compare it with those reported previously. METHODS: All babies who were born with NTDs at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between 1997 and 2005 were included in the study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the virtual importance of identified barriers to preventive interventions and to explore the association between physicians9 characteristics and their attitudes towards prevention. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 182 randomly selected family and general physicians (164/182=90% response rate) from total of 385 general physicians from 5 health sectors of Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2005. A pre-tested questionnaire asking physicians to rate the general importance of 8 preventive health strategies was used. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic outcome and prognostic factors in patients with non-metastatic esophageal carcinoma. METHODS: Between January 1989 and December 2003, 171 patients with non-metastatic esophageal carcinoma patients were retrospectively assessed in the Department of Radiation and Oncology, Institute of Oncology, Turkey. OBJECTIVE: To determine contemporary patterns of presentation and trends in the management and outcome of 51 newborn infants with intestinal atresia. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 51 cases of intestinal atresia between January 1983 and February 2003. Clinical data included antenatal history, age, gender, weight, presenting symptoms and signs, diagnostic procedures, location and type of atresia, associated abnormalities, surgical treatment, associated problems, morbidity, mortality and plans of treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of periodic health examination. METHODS: The follow-up results of 2005-2006 of periodic health examination clinic of the Department of Family Medicine of Ondokuzmayis University Medical School were evaluated using a questionnaire and constant follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 387 (195 women, 192 men) patients were provided a periodic health examination. In 186 patients, the total cholesterol values were high at the time of the first visit. OBJECTIVE: To compare the blood lead levels of mothers and cord blood in intrauterine growth retarded (IUGR) neonates and normal term neonates. METHODS: From April to December 2005, we carried out a cross-sectional, prospective study in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran. Blood lead levels were measured in the umbilical cord and maternal venous blood samples in 32 mother-infant pairs with IUGR full term neonates, and 34 mother-infant pairs with normal full term neonates.
