Does Ramadan Fasting Affect Expiratory Flow Rates In Healthy Subjects?, Qamar A. Siddiqui, Mohammed N. Khan, Salman Sabir

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Ramadan fasting affects the expiratory flow rates in healthy subjects, and to know if these effects correlate to a change in other variables. METHODS: This unmatched case-control longitudinal study includes 46 non-smoking healthy subjects who undertook lung function testing at the Aga Khan University, Pakistan. Expiratory flow rates and body mass were measured in 3 Islamic months, corresponding to November 2001 to January 2002. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in body mass in Ramadan compared to pre and post Ramadan. No significant changes in expiratory flows were seen during Ramadan as compared to the pre …

OBJECTIVE: To review the intestinal parasites diagnosed in a university hospital in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of intestinal parasitic infections reported in patients visiting at King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH), Riyadh, KSA from 1996 to 2003. Information regarding positive cases detected during the study period was collected from the hospital records, using the Hospital Information System database of KKUH. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of retinopathy in hypertensive patients referred to a teaching hospital in Yazd, Iran. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 213 hypertensive patients referring to a teaching hospital in Yazd, Iran between November 2004 and June 2005. Data were collected using a questionnaire after an interview and ocular examination. Demographic variables, hypertensive retinopathy, familial history of hypertension, duration of diagnosis, and other hypertension side effects such as cardiac, renal, cerebro-vascular complications were analyzed. OBJECTIVE: To find out the prevalence and relation between osteoarthritis of knees and obesity in Al-Ahsa region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: The study included 243 male and female patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of knees between June 2001 to March 2003. OBJECTIVE: To determine the concentration of plasma leptin and other metabolic hormones in offspring of diabetic and none diabetic mothers after 2 weeks of age. The relationship between leptin and metabolic hormones was also investigated. METHODS: Included in the study were 79 newborns from the Neonatal Unit at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from January 2004-January 2005. OBJECTIVE: To develop a molecular technique that is fast and reliable in detecting porcine contamination or ingredients in foods. METHODS: The method applied involved DNA amplification using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. Thus, the sequence of a certain gene found uniquely in pork was identified and its sequence was used to design specific primers for the PCR. The extraction of DNA was optimized in respect to PCR and detection limits were established. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of hospitalization in the internal disease clinics on nutrition variables. METHODS: This study was a cohort-type study performed in the Internal Diseases Clinics, University Hospital in Turkey. We included 208 patients who were hospitalized in the Internal Diseases Clinics of the University between June and August 2003. The clinical nutrition parameters of all the patients were evaluated from anthropometric measurements and laboratory results at admission and discharge. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the factors associated with patients with Fournier9s gangrene, and to clarify the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) as a comorbid disease on morbidity and mortality of patients with Fournier9s gangrene. METHODS: Twenty-six Fournier9s gangrene patients who were admitted to the Emergency Department of Ankara Numune Teaching and Research Hospital, Ankara, Turkey from 1997 to 2003 were examined retrospectively. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic factors affecting morbidity and mortality in severe preeclampsia, eclampsia and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome cases. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated, 2245 cases who delivered in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Cukurova University, Turkey between January and December 2002. Ninety-three cases had severe preeclampsia, 26 cases eclampsia, 19 cases HELLP syndrome, and 6 cases with eclampsia and HELLP syndrome were included in this study.
