OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the extent and quality of the patient9s education on warfarin and its possible impact on the international normalized ratio (INR). METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study using a 20-item, self administered questionnaire of knowledge, offered to patients who were taking warfarin for at least 2 months and attending the medical or cardiology anticoagulation clinics in Hamad General Hospital, Hamad Medical Corporation, State of Qatar between August 2008 to November 2008. OBJECTIVE: To examine the in vitro antimicrobial effect of a 20% Miswak extract against a mixture of Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) using the dilution tube susceptibility test, which allows direct contact between the tested material and the microorganisms. OBJECTIVE: To describe the initial results of open ventral hernia repair by sublay placement of the self-expanding ring polypropylene patch (Kugel patch). METHODS: Twenty-four patients with ventral/incisional hernias were operated upon with this technique between December 2004 and August 2008 in the Department of General Surgery, Affiliated Zhong-Da Hospital, Southeast University, Nanjing, JiangSu Province, China. Hernia defect sizes, operative technique, operative times, postoperative complications, and recurrence were recorded. OBJECTIVE: To determine knowledge of osteoporosis in middle-aged and elderly Saudi women, and to identify women in need of education on osteoporosis. METHODS: We conducted this cross-sectional analytical study of 368 women who attended the well-person clinic in a primary health care center (PHCC) in the Dirab area, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between January and July 2006, using a validated questionnaire. RESULTS: Seventy-six percent of women were postmenopausal, 62% had heard of osteoporosis, and younger women had more knowledge of this disease. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between resistin gene RETN C-180G variant and circulating resistin concentration in Saudi colon cancer patients. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted in the Biochemistry Department, King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from April 2009 to December 2009. The serum concentration had been measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 60 colon cancer patients and in 60 controls matched in gender and age. OBJECTIVE: To derive the normal reference values for Middle East population using a standard method, and to validate its performance in functional dyspepsia. METHODS: A prospective study was designed to derive gastric emptying parameters in 36 healthy control subjects. We measured the lag phase, half time, and gastric retention at the first, second, and third hours. Values were compared to 49 patients with functional dyspepsia. OBJECTIVE: To compare the traditional yogurt and probiotic yogurt in improving acute non-inflammatory gastroenteritis. METHODS: A double blinded case-control clinical trial, performed in 100 patients aged 6 months to 12 years of age from October 2008 to September 2009 in Ghaem and Dr. Sheikh Hospitals in Mashhad, Iran. METHODS: All preterm and full term live and stillborn babies delivered at Al-Ramadi Maternity and Children9s Hospital, Al-Anbar Governorate, Iraq, from the 1st of November 2007 to the 1st of November 2008 were examined for gender, gestational age, NTDs, and associated congenital malformations. METHODS: A retrospective review was carried out on all children (n=90) with the diagnosis of classical cystic fibrosis who attended the Respiratory Pediatric Clinic at King Hussein Medical Center, Amman, Jordan from January 2002 - December 2008. OBJECTIVE: To study the knowledge and attitude of Saudi women towards breastfeeding. METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted in 3 major hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during the period 7 July - 22 July 2009. Eight hundred and forty-eight women in the post-natal and post-cesarean section wards were included in the study along with women attending antenatal clinics. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of opium smoking cessation on the frequency and type of microorganisms in the nasopharynx of opium smokers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed in the Psychiatry, and Ear, Nose, and Throat Departments, Moradi Hospital, Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences, Rafsanjan, Iran from June to November 2008. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among health care professionals working at Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, Qatar. METHODS: Between 15th January 2007 and 15th January 2008, 340 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Each subject completed a diary to determine the duration of sunlight exposure, and vitamin D supplements. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, and albumin were obtained. OBJECTIVES: To establish a reliable cost-effective screening criterion for cystic fibrosis (CF) among underweight children suffering from frequent chest infections using the sweat chloride test (SCT). METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 145 children with frequent chest infections were seen in the Pediatric Department at Prince Rashed Bin Al-Hassan Hospital, Irbid, Jordan, between January and December 2008. Their age ranged from 2-12 years (87 males and 58 females). We obtained 11 children with positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for CF from hospital laboratory records, and 134 had no confirmed CF. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of oral bony outgrowths (OBOs); torus palatinus (TP), torus mandibularis (TM), and exostoses in Jordanian dental patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between November 1 and December 31, 2008 at the University of Jordan Hospital, Amman, Jordan. Clinical examinations of 618 patients (354 men and 264 women), 10-82 years of age, were conducted to determine the presence of OBOs. RESULTS: There were 239 subjects (38.7%) who had OBOs.
