Objectives: To evaluate the awareness of spina bifida (SB), risk factors and possible preventive measures among mothers who had been following in our clinic with a spina bifida affected child. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study with 38 mothers of SB patients who are following at SB and hydrocephalus clinic at King Fahad University Hospital, Khobar, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. Results: Thirty-eight mother were included in this questionnaire. Most of the participants were Saudi (94.7%). Objectives: To determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and related factors in individuals aged ≥65 years living in the Bornova district of Izmir, Turkey. Sarcopenia is one of the most serious health problems among elderly individuals. Objective: To investigate the public perception of morbid obesity and bariatric surgery in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2016 and November 2017 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, including Saudis aged ≥18 years. Medical students, physicians, and individuals who underwent bariatric surgery were excluded. Participants were interviewed using a new, validated questionnaire. Results: We interviewed 1,129 individuals of whom 744 (65.9%) were women. The educational level of most was a bachelor’s degree. Objectives: To present an unusual major mechanical complication of central venous catheterization (CVC). Methods: Between January 2016 and January 2017, data of the patients who underwent CVC in Cumhuriyet University in Sivas, Turkey, were retrospectively reviewed. The patients who experienced an unusual mechanical catheter-related complication are included in this study. Other complications of central venous catheter placement, except mechanical catheter complications such as infection or thrombosis, were excluded from the study. Methionyl-Trna Synthetase Novel Mutation Causes Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis, Mohammed Alzaid, Abdullah Alshamrani, Ayed Alenzi, Sarar Mohamed

The methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MARS) mutation is a very rare cause of congenital pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. We report a 6-month-old boy born with symmetrical intrauterine growth retardation presented with unexplained persistent tachypnea and hypoxemia associated with severe failure to thrive, anemia, hypoalbuminemia and hepatomegaly. Detailed pulmonary investigations including computed tomography chest scan, bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage revealed pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. Whole exome sequencing identified a homozygous novel variant in the MARS gene, c.854T>C p.(Ile285Thr).

Objectives: To analyze the overall trends in cancer incidence and mortality in Saudi Arabia between 1990 and 2016. Methods: Data were retrieved through a Global Burden of Disease (GBD, 2016) database (Viz Hub) that is developed by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. Objectives: To investigate HIV related discrimination among general dentists in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and to list factors affecting or causing healthcare providers to discriminate people living with HIV (PLWH). Methods: The current study takes place in Jeddah, western Saudi Arabia. The duration for accepting all responses was between March and November, 2017. In this cross-sectional study, we used a self-administered, structured questionnaire. The sample size was 430 general dentists practicing in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Descriptive statistics, mean, and standard deviation were calculated. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was carried out at p <0.05 level of significance. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used for data analysis. Results: In our study population, the total HIV related discrimination was 67.4%. Approximately 98.1% defer PLWH to the last appointment of the day, while 84.7% refer them to specialists. Furthermore,100% reported wearing double gloves, and 94.7% where wearing protective eye shields if they encounter HIV-patient in the clinic. Male participants were found to be 23% more likely to be discriminative compared to female participants, Moreover, participants who are confident to provide both surgical and non-surgical dental treatment for PLWH were found to be 52% less likely to be discriminative towards PLWH. Also, HIV discrimination is 33% higher in the private practice compared to the governmental practice. Conclusion: Human immunodeficiency virus related discrimination in the study population was affected by dentists’ gender, type of practice, and self-protective attitudes.

Objective: To detect changes in circulating strains of rotavirus in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) post rotavirus immunization drive. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and the Cochrane Library and specific database website (Nutrition and Food Sciences) for relevant articles. Our search included websites of a number of relevant organizations in addition to gray. literature search. Of the 2198 articles found, we included only 35 studies after excluding irrelevant, ineligible, duplicated, and very low-quality papers. Objectives: To evaluate the growth parameters in congenital adrenal hyperplasia patients in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This is a descriptive retrospective study over the period of 5 years. Data analysis was using Statistical Package for Social Science. The study included 90 participants in which 61 were girls and 29 were boys aged 0 to 18 years . They were evaluated in Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between January 2012 and January 2017. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of a multidisciplinary intensive education program (MIEP) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients’ outcomes. Methods: A retrospective study was used to evaluate the impact of MIEP on T2DM patients’ outcomes for between May 2016 and May 2017. Objectives: To observe the frequency of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), pattern of clinical presentation and diagnosis among Saudi children at 2 tertiary care hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: The database of children admitted or seen, and aged less than 18 years over 5 years period and diagnosed with EoE was collected and reviewed. Patients with esophagitis other than EoE were excluded. Patients who had eosinophils count more than 15/high power field (HPF) on esophageal biopsies were given the diagnosis of EoE.
