Prostate Cancer In The Arab Population: An Overview, Osman Z. Al-Abdin, Ibrahim Z. Al-Beeshi
Prostate Cancer In The Arab Population: An Overview, Osman Z. Al-Abdin, Ibrahim Z. Al-Beeshi
Saudi Medical Journal
This review evaluated prostate cancer studies from around the world and investigated the causes of differences among them. Prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates showed significant discrepancies between countries and ethnicities. In North America as well as in other western countries, the most common cancer was found to be prostate cancer; however, it appears to be not as prevalent among men in the Middle East and North Africa. Statistics show that screening of prostate-specific antigen levels should be applied depending on ethnicity and age. Other environmental aspects such as dietary and androgenic factors are believed to have caused these differences.

However, some other substances, such as honey and green tea, which have antimicrobial properties, and berries, which have anticarcinogenic potential, exhibit beneficial effects on oral health. The effectiveness of synthetic drugs in maintaining oral health cannot be ignored; however, the benefits of synthetic drugs are associated with adverse effects and high costs. By contrast, the medicinal use of natural substances is associated with safety, affordability, and long-term benefits. In this paper, we review …

Use Of Lipid Emulsion Therapy In Local Anesthetic Overdose, Ozgur Karcioglu
Saudi Medical Journal
The use of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) therapy as antidote in systemic toxicity of certain agents has gained widespread support. There are increasing data suggesting use of ILE in reversing from local anesthetic-induced systemic toxicity severe, life-threatening cardiotoxicity, although findings are contradictory. Efficiency of ILE was demonstrated in animal studies in the treatment of severe impairment of cardiac functions, via a mechanism for trapping lipophilic drugs in an expanded plasma lipid compartment (“lipid sink”). In patients with hemodynamic compromise and/or cardiovascular collapse due to lipid-soluble agents, ILE may be considered for resuscitation in the acute setting by emergency physicians. The …

Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To determine the accuracy of the Broselow tape on estimating body weights of selected Saudi children. Methods: This is prospective study of children aged 7 days to 13 years who attended the Emergency Department of King Fahd Hospital of the University, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia, from June 2015 to September 2015. Only children <34 kg were enrolled for the study and children with triage categories I and II were eliminated to avoid delay in providing appropriate treatment in these circumstances. Results: The relationship between the actual and tape estimated body weights showed a correlation coefficient of 0.945 ( p <0.001) for all children. When adjusting the correlation coefficient related to weight groups, the correlation coefficient was 0.911 ( p <0.001) for children with body weights between 10 to 25 kg. Conclusion: The Broselow tape measurements do not provide satisfactory results for all children in the selected population, but do provide highly correlated measurements for those children with body weights between 10 and 25 kg.

Celiac Disease In Saudi Children: Evaluation Of Clinical Features And Diagnosis, Anjum Saeed, Asaad Assiri, Hebah Assiri, Anhar Ullah, Mohsin Rashid
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To characterize the clinical presentations and diagnosis including serological tests and histopathological findings in children with celiac disease. Methods: All children (<18 years) with confirmed celiac disease diagnosed over a 6 year period at a private tertiary care health care center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia were studied retrospectively. Information collected included demographics, clinical presentation and diagnostic modalities with serology and small intestinal histology reported by Marsh grading. Results: A total of 59 children had confirmed celiac disease. Thirty (50.8%) were male. Median age was 8 years (range 1 to 16 years). The mean duration of symptoms before diagnosis was 2.3 (±1.5) years. Classical disease was present only in 30.5%, whereas 69.5% had either non-classical presentations or belonged to high risk groups for celiac disease such as those with type-1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroiditis, Down syndrome and siblings. Failure to thrive was the most common presentation followed by short stature, abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea. Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody was positive in 91.5%, and titers were no different between those with classical and non-classical disease. All had Marsh-graded biopsy findings consistent with celiac disease. Conclusion: Children with celiac disease usually present with non-classical features. A high index of suspicion needs to be maintained to consider this disorder in the diagnostic workup of pediatric patients. High risk group should be screened early to avoid complications associated with untreated celiac disease.
