Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the main city of Malaysia at a tertiary teaching hospital between January to April 2021. A total of 218 women diagnosed with endometriosis symptoms were recruited using the universal sampling method to answer the questionnaire. Results: The revised Malay version of the EHP-30 with 28 items demonstrated that the factor loading of the 28 items had an acceptable value range between 0.60-0.90. The model fit was acceptable after the inclusion …

Objectives: To establish local DRL (LDRL) for computed tomography (CT) examinations based on size-specific dose estimates (SSDEs), which consider patient size. The concept of diagnostic reference level (DRL) was introduced to limit patient exposure to unnecessary radiation. However, traditional DRL values do not consider patient size. Methods: Following institutional committee approval, data were collected from CT examinations of adult patients at Madinah General Hospital, Al Madinah Al Munawwarah, Saudi Arabia from January to March 2023. The SSDE was calculated for each patient using the effective diameter (D eff ). Results: The LDRLs of the brain, cervical spine, chest, thoracic spine …

Predictive Value Of Ferritin, Glucose, Urea, And Creatinine For Covid-19 Severity And Mortality In Patients From Asir, Saudi Arabia, Ahmad A. Shaikh, Turki A. Mubasher, Mohammed H. Makkawi, Sultan Z. Alasmari
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To correlate demographics, blood groupings, and laboratory characteristics of hospitalized COVID-19 patients with disease severity and outcomes. Methods: This study included 294 COVID-19 patients. Data on patient age, gender, laboratory results, clinical severity, mortality, comorbidities, and blood group were obtained from medical records retrospectively. Results: High levels of ferritin ( p <0.01), urea ( p <0.0001), and creatinine ( p <0.05) were detected in intensive care unit (ICU)-admitted patients. Ferritin ( p <0.05), glucose ( p <0.0001), urea ( p <0.0001), and creatinine ( p <0.0001) were significantly higher in non-survivor compared to survivor COVID-19 patients. Predictors for ICU admission among patients were ferritin (odd ratio [OR]=0.999, p =0.0055) and urea (OR=0.991, p =0.0001). Predictors for mortality were: age (OR=0.963, p =0.0001), ferritin (OR=0.999, p =0.0149), glucose (OR=0.993, p =0.0001), urea (OR=0.976, p =0.0001), and creatinine (OR=0.556, p =0.0001). The most reliable laboratory parameters in predicting mortality were: age (area under the curve [AUC]=0.685, p <0.0001), ferritin (AUC=0.610, p <0.05), glucose (AUC=0.681, p <0.0001), urea (AUC=0.856, p <0.0001), and creatinine (AUC=0.823, p <0.0001). Conclusion: High ferritin, glucose, urea, and creatinine levels may predict poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients. These findings could help predict admissions to the ICU and mortality among such patients.

Obesity is an alarming public health concern and needs to be addressed promptly in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Sedentary lifestyle, changes in dietary intake and choice, culture, gender, climatic conditions and, lately, COVID-19 have contributed to obesity as a near epidemic in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Interventions targeting obesity includes lifestyle management, pharmacotherapy, and surgery. Lifestyle interventions qualify as first-line therapies. Acinetobacter Baumannii: A Multidrug-Resistant Pathogen, Has Emerged In Saudi Arabia, Jehad A. Aldali
Saudi Medical Journal
A significant opportunistic pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii ( A. baumannii ) has evolved mechanisms of resistance to a wide variety of antimicrobials, including carbapenems. In this article, we assessed the prevalence, risk factors, antimicrobial sensitivity, and resistance mechanisms among A. baumannii in several locations in Saudi Arabia. Hospital-acquired infections caused by A. baumannii were prevalent in the country due to a variety of reasons, such as the high number of critically ill patients, the frequency of gastrointestinal colonization, and the widespread use of antimicrobial medications. There has been an increase in the frequency of A. baumannii strains that are resistant to …

The Usability Of Neopterin In Determining Disease Course In Covid-19, Duru Mıstanoglu Ozatag, Pınar Korkmaz, Havva Keskin, Havva Koçak
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To investigate the usability of neopterin in demonstrating the progression of COVID-19. As a result of uncontrolled activation of COVID-19 monocytes and macrophages, IFN gamma increases and the resulting inflammatory response causes organ damage. IFN released from T cells causes an increase in gamma neopterin levels. Therefore, measurement of neopterin levels can be used to indicate immune system activation and disease progression. Methods: The study was carried out prospectively in two different centers. The patients were divided into two groups (mild-moderate and severe) and clinical, laboratory, imaging findings and neopterin levels at hospitalization were compared. Results: 100 patients were …
