OBJECTIVE: Accidental injuries are the leading cause of death among children. Many of these injuries could be prevented if the parents took additional safety precautions. We aimed to study the parent9s safety practices and explore the possible correlating and contributing factors to unfavorable safety behaviors. METHODS: Prospective interviews with the parents of infants seen consecutively during a routine well baby clinic visit were conducted using a structured 38-item questionnaire. RESULTS: Two hundred and eighty nine structured interviews were conducted and the mother was interviewed in 88% of cases. Only 4% of families had a smoke detector at home and 8% …

The global emergence of antimicrobial resistance has become a pre-eminent concern in medicine and public health. Antimicrobial resistance is of particular concern because the problem is widespread, the causative factors are uncontrolled, and national strategies to address the problem are lacking. The persisting burden of infectious diseases makes elimination of antibiotic use unethical, but dramatic overuse and misuse of antimicrobial agents around the world must be reduced to extend the useful lifetimes of these drugs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the validity of using some physical characteristics to estimate gestational age of the Yemini newborn babies and to compare the results with the findings of other similar studies. METHODS: By using the definitions of 12 physical characteristics and the simple and multiple regression methods, the gestational ages of 184 Yemeni newborns were estimated. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prescribing pattern of depot neuroleptics and the clinical characteristics of patients attending depot clinic. METHODS: A case series of chronic psychotics attending the depot clinic in the day care center at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Riyadh, over 10 years. Data was obtained from hospital records, patients interview and contact with patients9 relatives and social workers. RESULTS: The total number of patients was 69 (55% were males). The majority were single schizophrenics between 25 and 45 years. Fifty-one percent of patients lost contact with the service. The Chlorpromazine equivalent depot dose was 188.5 mg/day. We report our experience of obstetric handling of a deaf pregnant patient antenatally, in labor and postpartum. The patient was deaf from childhood. The attending obstetrician had no training in the necessary skills for communication with the deaf. Fortunately, the patient could read and write English very well and communication was carried out through pen and paper. This proved to be difficult, time-consuming and required a lot of patience. The clinical, psychological and human aspects of the management were gratifying. The patient brought up interesting aspects that need to be considered when dealing with similar patients. This study is aimed at investigating the presence of diabetic autonomic neuropathy in a group of Sudanese diabetic patients and its relationship to factors like glycemic control, duration of diabetes and presence of peripheral neuropathy. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether treatment of the sexual partners of women with vulvo-vaginal candidiasis with oral Ketoconazole can affect the cure and recurrence rate of candida vaginitis. METHODS: A total number of 144 women with vaginal candidiasis were treated with Ketoconazole 400 mg daily for 7 days, and half the male partners were treated with Ketoconazole 400 mg daily for 7 days. OBJECTIVE: To report the result of causative organisms in chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma. METHODS: Eighty eight patients clinically diagnosed with chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma, and confirmed intra-operatively and by histological examination were pre-operatively studied for the causative bacteria and fungi. RESULTS: A single isolate was obtained in 42 (48%) cases, no growth was isolated in 11 (12.5%) cases. Most common bacteria isolated were, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in 51%, Staphylococcus Aureus in 31%, and Proteus species in 17%. Among the 15 fungal isolates, 9 (10%) were Aspergillus species and the remaining 6 (7%) were Candida Albicans. CONCLUSION: Conventional …

OBJECTIVE: To study the frequency, type, and severity of adverse reactions to intravenous immunoglobulin infusions and possible preventable measures. METHODS: We prospectively studied the frequency, type, and severity of adverse reactions in 104 intravenous immunoglobulin infusions (IntraglobinTMF) given to 13 patients suffering from several immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases over 15 months in King Hussein Medical Center. The severity of the reaction was classified as mild, moderate and severe. Transmission of infections such as human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B, and C was monitored. All published data on benign prostatic hyperplasia in Saudi Arabia was reviewed. The age of presentation of the benign prostatic hyperplasia Saudi patient is between 60 and 70 years. Until the introduction of medical therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia, presentation by complication was common, mainly by retention of urine in 40-50% of the cases. Diagnostic modalities are improving and both biochemical and imaging techniques are now available. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the profile of ankylosing spondylitis as seen in the Rheumatology Practice at Prince Rashid Ben Al-Hassan Hospital, lrbid, Jordan over a period of 14 months. METHODS: Fifty-two cases that met the modified New York clinical criteria for ankylosing spondylitis were accumulated.
