OBJECTIVE: To determine the blood lead level in the non-occupationally exposed Jordanian population as a baseline for comparative studies. METHODS: Seven hundred and forty six blood samples were collected and analyzed using Graphic Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. A representative sample for the Jordanian community was selected. RESULTS: The arithmetic mean for blood lead level in the whole sample was 1.96 µg/d1 which was lower than the other means determined by international studies. CONCLUSION: The blood lead level among the Jordanian population was found to be less than the levels in other countries, this may be partly explained by the low …

OBJECTIVE: To study the referral pattern of physical diseases in psychiatric in-patients in a university teaching general hospital. METHODS: A longitudinal prospective study, over 12 months with a consecutive series of referrals from psychiatric in-patient unit to other specialties, in King Khalid University Hospital, using a predesigned format that included information on age, sex, physical examination on admission, consulted medical specialties and opinion of the consulted physician. RESULTS: Referral rate was 38% of the total psychiatric in-patients. The most common consulted specialties were endocrinology (14.5%), dermatology (12.5%) and cardiology (12%). A 22 year old unbooked female patient presented to our Prince Hashem Hospital in Al-Zarqa with labor pain. The patient was admitted to our labor room and delivered normally. Diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia was made after she developed left eye macular hemorrhage on the second day of delivery and confirmed by bone marrow biopsy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus infection among male patients with sexually transmitted disease in Kuwait with emphasis on the type of sexually transmitted diseases and sexual partners. METHODS: A sentinel surveillance was conducted among male sexually transmitted disease patients, randomly selected among all new sexually transmitted disease patients who visited the Family Planning Clinic during June 1996 to June 1997. OBJECTIVE: The study was undertaken to compare the frequencies of the various types of malignant neoplasms affecting females in the Asir Region of Saudi Arabia during the years 1996-1998, to the experience of a previous report (1987 to 1989) in the same population with rapid advancing health care services. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to study the pattern of deafness among boys of Al-Amal Institutes for the Deaf in Abha, the capital city of Asir Region, Southwestern Saudi Arabia. OBJECTIVE: The association between cancer and thromboembolic disease has been known for over a century. Increased tissue factor expression by endothelial cells, monocytes or macrophages is implicated. Thus, monocyte tissue factor measurements may reflect disease presence or progression. METHODS: Using a 2 stage kinetic chromogenic assay, monocyte tissue factor levels were assessed in normal controls (n=60), patient controls (hernia or cholecystectomy, n=60) and in patients with benign and malignant disease of the bladder (n=73), prostate (n=81), breast (n=83) and colorectum (n=62). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to study the pattern, prevalence, knowledge and practice of smoking among parents of 6-15 years old schoolboys in Al-Khobar City, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. The methodology included the distribution of a self-administered questionnaire, which was filled out by 2964 parents of 1482 schoolboys who satisfied the selection criteria of the study. RESULTS: The overall rate of smoking among parents of this sample was 18% (32% among fathers and 4% for mothers). OBJECTIVE: The specific objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and practice of workers in small industries regarding preventive measures of occupational hazards. METHODS: Three workshops were randomly selected from each of the 8 types of industries in the industrial area. This gave a total sample of 24 workshops. OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of reporting communicable diseases in Jeddah region, and to compare the recording system between the governmental and private sector. METHODS: This is a review of records study, in which the reports of communicable diseases from all hospitals and health centers (with or without cases) were studied, during the period of study; 1st to 25th international weeks 1999, and the reporting rate was calculated. A simple random sample was collected from these international weeks to evaluate the quality of recorded information. RESULTS: The reporting rate was 74%.
