Familial Mediterranean Fever is a genetic disorder frequently diagnosed among the Arabs. It is also prevalent among Jews, Armenians and Turks. The clinical picture consists of febrile and painful attacks that differ in quality across patients and even within the same patient. There may be accompanying joint pain, chest pain, skin manifestations and other findings, and amyloidosis may occur in some patients as a complication. The primary treatment is Colchicine, which decreases the frequency of the attacks and prevents the occurrence of amyloidosis. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the knowledge and attitude of physicians, regarding fever in children. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to 600 randomly selected pediatricians, family practice physicians, emergency medicine physicians and general practitioners, who practice in Saudi Arabia. Appropriateness of responses to questions was determined on the basis of current medical literature. A rectal temperature of 38.0oC is generally accepted as indicative of fever in children. RESULTS: Of the 600 physicians surveyed, 419 (70%) completed and returned the questionnaire; 17% of the physicians were consultants, 28% specialists and 55% general practitioners. OBJECTIVE: To report on the prevalence and implications of hypertension in hospitalized type 2 diabetic patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. METHODS: Relevant data was retrieved from the medical charts of type 2 diabetic patients admitted to the medical unit of King Abdulaziz University Hospital in the period between January 1998 and September 1999. OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to assess the incidence of diabetic neuroarthropathy and its related morbidity. METHODS: The medical records of 296 diabetic patients were analyzed retrospectively between June of 1998 and July of 1999. The patients with long standing, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and associated peripheral neuropathy were evaluated clinically and radiographically for the presence of arthropathic changes in the feet. OBJECTIVE: To explore the possibility of controlling established tumors by active immunization through specific and nonspecific methods. METHODS: By subcutaneous methylcholanthrene, a fibrosarcoma was produced in adult Swiss male mice. The fibrosarcoma was transplanted into the isogenic strain. OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanism and to measure the oxygenation/reduction activity of Ehrlich ascetic tumor cells in an isotonic solution by means of lucigenin dependent chemiluminesence. METHODS: All the measurements of the chemiluminesence redox activity of Ehrlich ascetic tumor cell samples in suspension medium, were carried out using a photon counting system especially designed to the purpose. OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to determine the degree of control of hypertension and the most commonly used drugs for hyertensive patients attending our community health center. METHODS: A cross sectional study carried out by randomly examining the case notes of patients attending our primary care clinics. RESULTS: Case notes of 3747 patients were examined, 2064 (55%) females (mean age 23.76 years) and 1683 (45%) males (mean age 24.63 years). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of bronchial asthma among Saudi School boys at Al-Khobar city. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. The methodology included the distribution of a self administered questionnaire which was filled by the parents of 1482 school boys who satisfied the selection criteria of the study. RESULTS: The prevalence rate of Questionnaire Diagnosed Asthma and Physician Diagnosed Asthma were 9.5% and 8%. OBJECTIVE: The objectives are to analyse corpus callosum agenesis in children with various neurological problems in a hospital set-up, and to study the neurological and systemic abnormalities associated with this condition. METHODS: The children with various neurological problems who underwent computerized tomography brain from January 1993 to December 1997, and were found to have corpus callosum agenesis, formed the subjects of this study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability and safety of penile implants in the treatment of organic impotence at the Saudi Aramco - Dhahran Health Center. METHODS: A series of 108 cases of organic impotence that underwent 125 penile implantation procedures between 1988 and 1997 was reviewed. The follow-up period ranged between 6 months and 10 years. The mean age was 57.9 years (range 26-76). The prostheses used were AMS (American Medical System) inflatable (92 cases) and malleable (16 cases). A male infant presented with intrahepatic cholestasis due to idiopathic eosinophilia damaging the biliary epithelium. No other etiological agent or cause could be identified. He responded well to prednisone therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the factors that influence the reproductive performance in patients who had previous salpingectomy by laparotomy for ectopic pregnancy in the South-west Region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Fifty four patients who had pregnancies following salpingectomy for previous ectopic pregnancy were studied retrospectively at Abha Maternity Hospital in the Southern Region of Saudi Arabia. RESULTS: There were 130 ectopic pregnancies during the study period out of which 54 patients became pregnant subsequently. Of the subsequent pregnancies, there were 41 (80%) intrauterine pregnancies and 13 (20%) extrauterine recorded pregnancies. Out of the intrauterine pregnancies, 36 (88%) resulted in full term …
