Even in the twenty-first century, welding is still a common and a highly skilled occupation. The hazardous agents associated with welding processes are acetylene, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, ozone, phosgene, tungsten, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, silver, tin, and zinc. All welding processes involve the potential hazards for inhalation exposures that may lead to acute or chronic respiratory diseases. OBJECTIVE: Data on the distribution of beta-thalassemia mutations in Arab populations are usually destined to disparate locations and much of these become increasingly difficult for an average researcher to locate. That is why we aimed at establishing an electronic database network, called Deniz, for beta-thalassemia allele frequency distributions in the Arab world at http://biobase.fatih.edu.tr. METHODS: The scheme of the database combines the benefits of the relational and hierarchical systems. Detailed statistics of the frequencies of beta-thalassemia mutations are retrieved in tabular forms. Multiple permanent connections allow flexible movement within the database. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to present the clinical pattern, surgical indication and management of primary hyperparathyroidism in a teaching hospital in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: The records of patients who underwent surgical treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism at the King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, KSA from March 1992 to October 2002 were reviewed for epidemiological data, biochemical, radiological investigation, operative procedures, histopathology result, preoperative localization studies included neck ultrasonogram, neck computerized tomography and thallium-technetium subtraction scan. OBJECTIVE: To determine the pattern of pitfalls of inhalation technique in chronic asthmatics; to assess whether an educational program can reduce the pitfalls of inhalation technique; and to evaluate whether reduction of the pitfalls could have a positive correlation with peak expiratory flow (PEF) measurements. OBJECTIVE: This study is conducted to detect metallothionein (MT) distribution in the epithelial cells of prostate gland from patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Prostatic tissues from patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and adenocarcinoma were processed for immunocytochemistry using indirect peroxidase antiperoxidase procedure and primary antibody against MT. The samples were collected over a period of 2-3 years and were processed at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan in the year 2002. This report describes a case of Takayasus arteritis in a 19-year-old Palestinian female. She conceived after diagnosis. Her pregnancy was complicated by uncontrolled hypertension, which was not associated with other markers of disease activity. Despite aggressive medical treatment, cesarean section had to be carried out at 34 weeks of pregnancy because of uncontrolled hypertension. A live fetus was borne, and her blood pressure was subsequently controlled with a single antihypertensive agent.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of diabetic patients who attained the optimal postprandial blood glucose level. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of type-2 diabetic patients being followed at the medical outpatient clinic of King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from January 1999 to December 2001. OBJECTIVE: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory periodic disorder characterized by febrile and painful attacks due to inflammation involving the serosal membranes. The gene implicated in this disorder, MEFV, has been cloned and mutations in its coding regions have been identified.
