Exploring Hypothyroidism’S Effects On Lipid Profiles: Evidence Of Metabolic Consequences In Subclinical Disease, Haifa M. Alnahdi
Saudi Medical Journal
ABSTRACT Objectives: To investigate the association between thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and lipid profiles in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) to assess the metabolic risks. Methods: This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with SCH between January 2023 and August 2024. Thyroid function markers (TSH, free triiodothyronine, and free thyroxine levels) and lipid profiles (total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels) were assessed in 137 patients. Results: The mean age of patients was 44.6±13.6 years, with 86.1% being female and 92.7% having dyslipidemia. Thyroid-stimulating hormone levels were correlated with serum creatinine levels (r=0.27, p =0.001) and showed a non-significant …

Hematological parameters, such as hemoglobin (HGB), white blood cells, hematocrit (HCT), platelets count, and red blood cells (RBCs) levels were determined for the dengue positive samples and all the controls. Results: Of the patients examined, 15% were dengue immunoglobulin M positive and 25% were immunoglobulin G positive. Dengue-infected patients …

An Exploration Of Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels After Unstable Femoral Intertrochanteric Fractures In Community-Dwelling Elderly, Hakan Zora, Gökhan Bayrak
An Exploration Of Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels After Unstable Femoral Intertrochanteric Fractures In Community-Dwelling Elderly, Hakan Zora, Gökhan Bayrak
Saudi Medical Journal
ABSTRACT Objectives: Inadequate vitamin D is related to increased fall risk, which leads to hip fractures among the elderly. Therefore, this study aimed to explore vitamin D levels and the variables potentially influencing the total hospitalization time of community-dwelling elderly patients with unstable femoral intertrochanteric fractures. Methods: Between 2020-2024, 75 elderly patients treated with total hip replacement (THR) were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into the deficient (<20 ng/mL, n=46), insufficient (20 to 29.99 ng/mL, n=16), and normal (≥30 ng/mL, n=13) serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) groups. Presence of delirium status, postoperative intensive care entrance, number of chronic diseases, preoperative waiting, and total hospitalization time after THR were recorded. Results: The cohorts’ mean serum 25(OH)D level was 20.11ng/mL. The deficient, insufficient, and normal serum 25(OH)D level groups displayed no significant difference in the postoperative intensive care entrance ( p =0.547) and the presence of delirium ( p =0.947). The multiple linear regression model indicated that elderly patients’ total hospitalization increases with the coefficients as the preoperative waiting time (β=0.466, p =0.001) and the number of chronic diseases (β=0.263, p =0.011) increase. Serum 25(OH)D level did not impact patients’ total hospitalization time (β=-0.072, p =0.474). Conclusion: This study indicated that community-dwelling elderly patients with unstable femoral intertrochanteric fractures had significantly decreased serum 25(OH)D levels. Reducing preoperative waiting time and monitoring and addressing chronic diseases may decrease total hospitalization. Efforts should focus on achieving and maintaining adequate vitamin D levels through supplementation post-hospitalization.

Comparative Study Of Pregnancy Risks In Different Maternal Age Groups, Amala Sunder, Yusuf Khaled Hadi, Noor Ammar Alkhuzaei, Nayla Jamal Bushaqer, Basma Darwish, Nawal Dayoub
Saudi Medical Journal
ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate and compare pregnancy complications associated with varying maternal age groups. Methods: A retrospective analysis of singleton pregnancy outcomes at Bahrain Defense Force Hospital from January to December 2022. The study population was divided into 4 age groups: <25 years, 25-29 years, 30-34 years, and ≥35 years. Data on demographics, maternal and fetal characteristics were collected, and statistical significance was set at p <0.05. Univariate logistic regression was performed to analyze maternal and neonatal outcomes, adjusting for maternal factors. Results: The study included 2,972 women aged 17-55. Significant associations were found between maternal age and outcomes. Body mass index (BMI) was significantly linked to age ( p <0.01), with younger women having lower BMI. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was more common in women ≥35 years (11.5%) vs. those <25 years (6.6%, p =0.027). Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) was more prevalent in the <25 years age group ( p =0.041).Logistic regression showed women 30-34 years had a lower risk of GDM compared to 25-29 years (odds ratio [OR]: 0.544, CI: 0.365-0.811), and women <25 years had a higher risk of preterm delivery (OR: 1.365, CI: 1.015-1.837). Conclusion: Maternal age is an independent risk factor for various adverse outcomes. Younger women (<25) are at higher risk for preterm delivery and IUGR, while older women (≥35) have higher rates of GDM.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To establish reference values for peripheral oxygen saturation levels in children using pulse oximetry. Pulse oximetry to assess peripheral oxygen saturation is widely used in pediatric care as part of vital signs monitoring. Although readings between 95% and 100% are often considered normal in clinical practice, recent studies suggest that the normal peripheral oxygen saturation range should be between 97% and 100%. Methods: This cross-sectional study included children aged ≤18 years attending pediatric clinics and not having respiratory distress or acute illness during their visit. Vital signs and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Oxygen saturation and pulse rate were …

ABSTRACT Objectives: To estimate the incidence of AP and determine potential predictors and the outcomes. Elevated lipase level of <3 times the upper limit of normal (ULN) cause diagnostic confusion for acute pancreatitis (AP). Methods: A multicenter, 6-year retrospective study enrolled adult patients who were detected with lipase level of 80–240 IU/L in the Emergency Department (ED). The Revised Atlanta Classification was used to identify AP within 72 hour (hr) from the first ED visit. Results: Of 1082 patients, 68 (6.3%) had AP, 393 (36.3%) were hospitalized, 64 (6%) required intensive care unit admission, and 2 (0.2%) died. Most AP cases were confirmed using computed tomography CT; 47 (69.1%), followed by repeated lipase level 15 (22.1%) and ultrasound 14 (20.6%). Alcohol exhibited the highest adjusted odds ratio of predicting AP (3.9–45.6), followed by white blood cell count (1.340–6.222), male gender (1.451–4.308), and higher lipase level (1.009–1.02). Among AP cases, 11.8% required ICU admission and 1 died within 72 hr. Chronic heart disease, obesity, fever, and tachycardia were associated with these critical outcomes. Conclusion: Among the study sample, 6.3% were diagnosed with AP. Most of the cases confirmed by CT and alcohol was the strongest risk factor in predicting AP. A prediction score system to stratify AP risk when lipase is <3 ULN is warranted.
