OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of low serum vitamin D level (25[OH]D) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared with healthy controls, and to analyze the association between 25(OH)D and disease activity. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of treatment with acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: We searched PUBMED, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from July to October 2011 for randomized controlled trials that compared needle acupuncture with sham acupuncture, standard care, or waiting list control groups in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Of the 490 potentially relevant articles, 14 RCTs involving 3,835 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Two authors independently extracted outcome data on short-term and long-term pain and functional measures. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, 6323 participants free of CVD (3255 women), with age of more than 35 years from 3 cities (Isfahan, Najafabad, and Arak) and their rural districts in central Iran were followed-up from 2001 to 2007. This study was carried out at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of celiac disease (CD) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) using anti-tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) antibodies. METHODS: A retrospective hospital record-based study of all children and adolescents with T1DM who were screened for CD was conducted at the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic of King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) between October 2002 and June 2011. OBJECTIVE: To explore the experience of interns in sensitive area examination during their undergraduate medical course and identify factors interfering with such examinations. METHODS: A cross sectional study was carried out from May to June 2010. Interns (n=315) at King Saud University College of Medicine were invited via email to complete a web-based questionnaire developed using surveymonkey.com. RESULTS: Out of 315 interns, 211 completed the questionnaire; 60% males and 40% females. Cowden syndrome is a rare genodermatosis characterized by the formation of hamartomas in various organs and increased risk of malignancy. This disease has variable expression and often presents with subtle skin signs, which can be missed. We report a 39-year-old Saudi male who presented with acral keratoses of Cowden syndrome, and misdiagnosed and treated by many dermatologists as viral wart. We aim to increase awareness of Cowden syndrome among health care workers.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the breastfeeding practices of Arab mothers by measuring breastfeeding indicators, and to identify the related determinants that affect maternal practices in Qatar. METHODS: Using interview administered questionnaires, we carried out this cross-sectional study with cluster sampling of 770 Arab mothers of children below 24 months of age attending primary health care centers in Qatar from June to October 2009. RESULTS: Early initiation of breastfeeding was found in 57%, exclusive breastfeeding under 6 months in 18.9%, and continued breastfeeding at one year in 49.9% of mothers. OBJECTIVES: To compare proseal laryngeal mask airway (PLMA) with an endotracheal tube (ET) for airway safety, maintained ease of insertion, and hemodynamic stability in pediatric strabismus surgery (PSS). METHODS: A retrospective review of histopathology archives in the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia of the period 1984-2010 was carried out from September 2010 to February 2011. Diagnosis was confirmed according to the World Health Organization histological classification for odontogenic tumors published in 2005. The relevant clinicopathological data were analyzed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence, indications, and factors associated with successful induction of labor (IOL), and maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: All women booked for IOL at King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from April 2010 to March 2011 were included. The characteristics of women who had successful IOL were compared to those who delivered by cesarean section (CS). A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the factors associated with successful IOL. RESULTS: During the study period, 564 women had IOL. OBJECTIVES: To determine the distribution of skeletal and dental malocclusions in a sample of Saudi orthodontic patients. METHODS: Six hundred and two randomly selected pretreatment orthodontic records were evaluated in this descriptive, retrospective study conducted between June to September 2009 at the Orthodontic Clinic of the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Cephalometric analysis using Dolphin software to measure the A point, Nasion, B point (ANB) angle and Wits appraisal was performed to determine the skeletal malocclusion. OBJECTIVES: To determine predictive fatality criteria based on clinical and laboratory findings on admission to hospital in patients diagnosed with pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus infection. METHODS: The study was conducted at the School of Medicine, Karadeniz Technical University, Trabzon, Turkey. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data for hospitalized cases with a diagnosis of A (H1N1) virus infection between October 2009 and May 2010 were analyzed retrospectively.
