Saudi Medical Journal
This paper presents a review to explore the literature focusing on portfolio in postgraduate general practice (GP) training, and to examine the impact of implementation of portfolio on learning process, as well as proposing recommendations for its implementation in postgraduate GP training. An electronic search was carried out on several databases for studies addressing portfolio in postgraduate GP training. Six articles were included to address specifically the effectiveness of portfolio in postgraduate GP training. Five of them described successful experiences of portfolio-based learning implementation. Only one article addressed portfolio-based assessment in postgraduate GP training. The existing evidence provides various benefits …

OBJECTIVE: To devise a new and simple technique to help select normal embryos that are human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matched to their affected siblings for diseases, such as beta-thalassemia or sickle cell anemia, which are common in this part of the world. METHODS: This study was conducted between March 2008 and April 2011 at the preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Laboratory, Saad Specialist Hospital, Al-Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Embryos were obtained after 7 in vitro fertilization preimplantation genetic diagnosis (IVF-PGD) cycles. Single cells were biopsied, and extracted DNA was amplified by the multiple displacement amplification (MDA) technique. Amplified DNA was then …

Dual Ectopic Thyroid With Lingual And Anterior Hyoid Ectopic Thyroid Tissue In A Chinese Girl, Rui Dong, Kai Li, Gongbao Liu, Shan Zheng
Saudi Medical Journal
Ectopic thyroid is not a common disease, and a double ectopic thyroid is extremely rare. We report a recent case of dual ectopic thyroid in an 11-year-old girl mimicking mono-ectopic lingual thyroid on the anterior view of the thyroid scan. The dual ectopic thyroid was shown on the lateral view, with foci in the lingual and anterior hyoid regions, but no thyroid tissue in the pre-tracheal region. She had originally been scheduled for surgery with a diagnosis of neck schwannoma, however, pre-operative thyroid scan and CT scan of the neck revealed the presence of dual ectopic thyroid tissue. Thyroid scan, …

Contact sports, such as football are widely practiced in Saudi athletes, little is carried out to educate them of measures regarding playing conditions and prophylactic steps like foot wear, warming up, and similarly. The usual potential complications associated with trauma to mature skeleton, as well as immature selection includes post-traumatic arthritis, stiffness, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, as well as those seen with physeal damage including leg length discrepancy, angular deformities, or a combination. Knowledge of these injuries, as well as the differences between children and adult …

Liposarcoma is the second most common soft tissue sarcoma after malignant fibrous histiocytoma in adults. It is frequently found in the extremities and retroperitoneum; rarely it can be seen in the chest wall. We report a rare case of giant liposarcoma originating from the chest wall representing a transformation of a relapsing lipoma in the same region. We performed chest wall resection, reconstruction with latissimus dorsi muscle transposition via posterolateral thoracotomy. The patient received 4 series of adjuvant chemotherapy after the postoperative diagnosis of dedifferentiated liposarcoma. The patient had no postoperative complication and has remained disease-free for 30 months.
