An Analysis Of Non-Comparison Based Sorting Algorithms, Jacob M. Gomez, Edgar Aponte, Brad Isaacson May 2022

An Analysis Of Non-Comparison Based Sorting Algorithms, Jacob M. Gomez, Edgar Aponte, Brad Isaacson

Publications and Research

Sorting algorithms put elements of a list into an order (e.g., numerical, alphabetical). Sorting is an important problem because a nontrivial percentage of all computing resources are devoted to sorting all kinds of lists. For our project, we implemented two non-comparison based sorting algorithms from pseudocode and compared them to various comparison based sorting algorithms. The two algorithms have their advantages and disadvantages as well as their unique features. We found that Radix Sort (which is a modified version of Counting Sort) was the most efficient of them all.

T Reflexivity is a process in qualitative research involving frequent examination of one’s position in the project. These positions include one’s assumptions, feelings, and so forth. An essential question for qualitative researchers, according to Leavy (2011), is “Has the researcher engaged …

Biometal Distribution And Diffusion: Contrast Resolution By Low Energy Mammography Versus High Spatial Resolution By Computed Tomography, Guito Charles, Robert O’Brien, Areeba Masroor May 2022

Biometal Distribution And Diffusion: Contrast Resolution By Low Energy Mammography Versus High Spatial Resolution By Computed Tomography, Guito Charles, Robert O’Brien, Areeba Masroor

Publications and Research

Low energy X-rays from a Mammography system were used to capture small differences in inherent tissue contrast in two-dimensional images of cut samples of select fruit and vegetable models avoiding excessive volume averaging. High spatial resolution CT images were also acquired of whole fruits to avoid volume averaging to help detect low tissue contrast. A limitation of CT imaging is the high kVp unavoidable in CT that lowers tissue contrast while the advantages are that of non-invasive 3D visualization. Using these two approaches that are very different in physical principles it is not known if either one could display possible …

Ferrate Vi: An Environmentally Friendly Oxidant For Water Treatment, Le Van La, Vishwas Joshi

Publications and Research

Water contamination is a common problem all over the world. Safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene are crucial to human health and well-being. Some of the common water purification methods are sedimentation or settling, boiling/distillation, chemical treatment, disinfection, and filtration. Chlorine and its compounds can kill waterborne bacteria and viruses, and they are used as disinfectants in water treatment. However, some of their byproducts can cause harmful health effects. The higher oxidation state of iron i.e., Ferrate (VI) possesses relatively higher redox potential as compared to other commonly used oxidants (chlorine dioxide, iodine, bromide, ozone), in water treatment. Further, Ferrate …

Publications and Research

Tau is a cytosolic protein that has also been observed in the nucleus, where it has multiple proposed functions that are regulated by phosphorylation. However, the mechanism underlying the nuclear import of tau is unclear, as is the contribution of nuclear tau to the pathology of tauopathies. We have previously generated a pathological form of tau, PH-tau (pseudophosphorylation mutants S199E, T212E, T231E, and S262E) that mimics AD pathological behavior in cells, Drosophila, and a mouse model. Here, we demonstrated that PH-tau translocates into the nucleus of transiently transfected HEK-293 cells, but wildtype tau does not. We identified a putative …

Background Drug discovery is time-consuming and costly. Machine learning, especially deep learning, shows great potential in quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) modeling to accelerate drug discovery process and reduce its cost. A big challenge in developing robust and generalizable deep learning models for QSAR is the lack of a large amount of data with high-quality and balanced labels. To address this challenge, we developed a self-training method, Partially LAbeled Noisy Student (PLANS), and a novel self-supervised graph embedding, Graph-Isomorphism-Network Fingerprint (GINFP), for chemical compounds representations with substructure information using unlabeled data. The representations can be used for predicting chemical properties such …

A Role For Myosin Ii Clusters And Membrane Energy In Cortex Rupture For Dictyostelium Discoideum, Emmanuel Asante-Asamani, Daniel Grange, Devarshi Rawal, Zully Santiago, John Loustau, Derrick Brazill

Publications and Research

Blebs, pressure driven protrusions of the cell membrane, facilitate the movement of eukaryotic cells such as the soil amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum , white blood cells and cancer cells. Blebs initiate when the cell membrane separates from the underlying cortex. A local rupture of the cortex, has been suggested as a mechanism by which blebs are initiated. However, much clarity is still needed about how cells inherently regulate rupture of the cor- tex in locations where blebs are expected to form. In this work, we examine the role of mem- brane energy and the motor protein myosin II (myosin) in facilitating …

Superfluidity Of Dipolar Excitons In A Double Layer Of Α -T3 With A Mass Term, Oleg L. Berman, Godfrey Gumbs, Gabriel P. Martins, Paula Fekete Apr 2022

Superfluidity Of Dipolar Excitons In A Double Layer Of Α -T3 With A Mass Term, Oleg L. Berman, Godfrey Gumbs, Gabriel P. Martins, Paula Fekete

Publications and Research

We predict Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of dipolar excitons, formed by electron-hole pairs in spatially separated gapped hexagonal α − T3 (GHAT3) layers. In the α − T3 model, the AB-honeycomb lattice structure is supplemented with C atoms located at the centers of the hexagons in the lattice. We considered the α − T3 model in the presence of a mass term which opens a gap in the energy-dispersive spectrum. The gap opening mass term, caused by a weak magnetic field, plays the role of Zeeman splitting at low magnetic fields for this pseudospin-1 system. The band structure of GHAT3 …

Variation In Compensatory Strategies As A Function Of Target Constriction Degree In Post-Glossectomy Speech, Christina Hagedorn, Yijing Lu, Asterios Toutios, Uttam Sinha, Louis Goldstein, Shrikanth Narayanan

Publications and Research

Individuals who have undergone treatment for oral cancer oftentimes exhibit compensatory behavior in consonant production. This pilot study investigates whether compensatory mechanisms utilized in the production of speech sounds with a given target constriction location vary systematically depending on target manner of articulation. The data reveal that compensatory strategies used to produce target alveolar segments vary systematically as a function of target manner of articulation in subtle yet meaningful ways. When target constriction degree at a particular constriction location cannot be preserved, individuals may leverage their ability to finely modulate constriction degree at multiple constriction locations along the vocal tract.

Publications and Research

Viral mRNAs that lack a 5 m 7 GTP cap and a 3 poly-A tail rely on structural elements in their untranslated regions (UTRs) to form unique RNA-protein complexes that regulate viral translation. Recent studies of the barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) have revealed eukaryotic initiation factor 3 (eIF3) plays a significant role in facilitating communication be- tween its 5 and 3 UTRs by binding both UTRs simultaneously. This report uses in vitro translation assays, fluorescence anisotropy binding assays, and selective 2 -hydroxyl acylation analyzed by primer ex-tension (SHAPE) footprinting to identify secondary structures that are selectively interacting with eIF3. …

The Solar-Electric Sail: Application To Interstellar Migration And Consequences For Seti, Gregory Matloff Apr 2022

The Solar-Electric Sail: Application To Interstellar Migration And Consequences For Seti, Gregory Matloff

Publications and Research

The Solar-Electric Sail accelerates by reflecting positively charged solar wind ions. If it is used to propel an interstellar migration mission, its interstellar cruise velocity relative to the home star cannot exceed the solar wind velocity. In an effort to analytically determine interstellar cruise velocity for a 107 kg generation ship, a constant solar wind velocity within the heliosphere of a Sun-like star of 600 km/s is assumed. The solar wind proton density at 1 AU is also considered constant at 10 protons per cubic centimeter. Solar wind density is assumed to decrease with the inverse square of solar distance. …

Acknowledging The Relevance Of Elephant Sensory Perception To Human–Elephant Conflict Mitigation, Robbie Ball, Sarah L. Jacobson, Matthew S. Rudolph, Miranda Trapani, Joshua M. Plotnik

Publications and Research

Elephants are well known for their socio-cognitive abilities and capacity for multi-modal sensory perception and communication. Their highly developed olfactory and acoustic senses provide them with a unique non-visual perspective of their physical and social worlds. The use of these complex sensory signals is important not only for communication between conspecifics, but also for decisions about foraging and navigation. These decisions have grown increasingly risky given the exponential increase in unpredictable anthropogenic change in elephants’ natural habitats. Risk taking often develops from the overlap of human and elephant habitat in Asian and African range countries, where elephants forage for food …
