Distribution Of Horseradish Peroxidase (Hrp)- Anti-Hrp Immune Complexes In Mouse Spleen With Special Reference To Follicular Dendritic Cells, Lei L. Chen, Andrea M. Frank, Judy Adams, Ralph M. Steinman
Publications
The distribution of immune complexes has been studied in mouse spleen stimulated to contain many germinal centers (GC′s). Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-anti-HRP complexes were used as an appropriately precise and sensitive model. We were primarily interested in the relative abilities of three cell types to interact with complexes: lymphocytes, macrophages, and follicular dendritic cells (FDC′s). The latter are distinctive, nonendocytic, stellate cells located primarily at the transition of mantle and GC zones of 2° lymphoid follicles (Chen, L. L., J. C. Adams, and R. M. Steinman, 1978, J. Cell Biol. 77: 148). Binding of immune complexes to lymphocytes could not be …

for his treatment before, during and after the court appearance. In some instances a child is not represented by an attorney other than that of other family members. Often the case revolves around a question of custody, and whenever the court decision results in changes of family circumstances the consequences may be greatest for the child. Any delay in recognizing an error in a custody decision or in establishing permanent custody intensifies the psychological stress and may even endanger his physical well being. …
Isotopic Anomalies And Proton Irradiation In The Early Solar System, Donald D. Clayton, Eliahu Dwek, S E. Woosley
Isotopic Anomalies And Proton Irradiation In The Early Solar System, Donald D. Clayton, Eliahu Dwek, S E. Woosley
Publications
Nuclear cross sections relevant to the various isotopic-abundance anomalies found in solar-system objects are evaluated in an attempt to set constraints on the hypothesized mechanism of irradiation of forming planetesimals by energetic protons from the young sun. A power-law proton spectrum is adopted, attention is restricted to proton energies less than about 20 MeV, and average cross sections are calculated for several reactions that might be expected to lead to the observed anomalies. The following specific anomalies are examined in detail: Al-26, Na-22, Xe-126, I-129, Kr-80, V-50, Nb-92, La-138, Ta-180, Hg-196, K-40, Ar-36, O-17, O-18, N-15, C-13, Li, Be, and …
Women In Astronomy In The United States 1875-1920, Pamela Etter Mack
Women In Astronomy In The United States 1875-1920, Pamela Etter Mack
Publications
In the period from about 1875 to 1920 (the dates are only intended to be approximate) more than 164 women held astronomical jobs in the United States, and a few became famous for important scientific contributions. This seems surprising at first, because it is not a period in which many opportunities were open to women, particularly for intellectual pursuits. This thesis will examine the development of a role for women in astronomy and the reasons for the acceptance of women into this field. The goal is to show how the scientific work done by the women astronomers was affected by …
Author's Reply: Extinct Radioactivities As Trapped Residuals Of Presolar Grains, Donald D. Clayton
Author's Reply: Extinct Radioactivities As Trapped Residuals Of Presolar Grains, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
Trivedi's attempted disproof of presolar grains as carriers of special 129Xe* in meteorites is rejected on three grounds: (1) the high-T losses of 129Xe* and 1271 are tightly correlated, (2) the sharply isochronous meteorites are partially differentiated but not truly metamorphosed, and (3) evidence that much of solar 129Xe was trapped in presolar grains has strengthened the plausibility of the presolar-grain picture.

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "A Demographic Analysis of the Omaha Jewish Community" by Murray Frost.
The 1970 Census asked no questions about religious identification and therefore a religious community must make its own studies to determine the characteristics of its population. A study conducted for the Omaha Jewish Federation by the Center for Applied Urban Research provided this data for the Omaha Jewish community.
This report presents data from a ten-page questionnaire mailed in Fall 1975 to all households on the "community list" maintained by the Omaha Jewish Federation. Responses were received from 1,165 of …

An Essay On The Determination Of Relevancy Under The Federal Rules Of Evidence, Arthur H. Travers Jr.
Publications
The scope of the general definition of "relevant evidence" in the Federal Rules of Evidence is ambiguous. It is unclear whether Congress, for instance, intended that certain issues be considered legislatively determined or that those issues rest within the discretion of the courts. There is also some uncertainty over the definition's applicability to several types of evidence--particularly undisputed facts such as those that provide background information or are judicially admitted.

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Economic Status in Midcontinent Metropolitan Areas, Third Quarter 1976," by Ralph H. Todd.
During the third quarter of 1976, Midcontinent metropolitan areas experienced the most universal decline in unemployment rates since the monitoring system was initiated for the fourth quarter of 1975. September unemployment rates in all 25 areas were lower than the United States rate, which declined from 8.1 percent during September of 1975 to 7.4 during September of 1976. Only Fargo, Rapid City and Cheyenne experienced unemployment rates higher than during September of 1975. The increase in average weekly …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Mid-Continent City Crime Rates: A Multivariate Analysis," by Ralph H. Todd.
Preliminary crime data (1975) provided the basis for analysis of variations in major crime among cities of the MidContinent Region. The Uniform Crime Reports measure seven Crime Index Offenses: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft. Remaining criminal offenses were not considered in this study. Crime rates per 100,000 population were compiled using the FBI Uniform Crime Reports and current population estimates (Table 1 ).
Gamma-Ray Emission And Nucleosynthesis Of Lithium By Young Pulsars, Donald D. Clayton, Eliahu Dwek
Gamma-Ray Emission And Nucleosynthesis Of Lithium By Young Pulsars, Donald D. Clayton, Eliahu Dwek
Publications
We propose that 7Li is produced in the Galaxy primarily by α-α collisions surrounding newly born pulsars. About 10 percent of the pulsar energy losses are converted to medium-energy α-particles which collide in a dominantly He nebula. The problem of the origin of lithium would be solved by the scenario, and clear-cut tests by nuclear γ-ray astronomy are described.

S-Process Studies: Branching And The Time Scale, Richard A. Ward, Michael J. Newman, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The theory of S-process heavy-element formation is reformulated to allow for competition between beta decay and neutron capture at various nuclei along the path. Solutions to the resulting branching network equations are presented (under the assumption of constant temperature and neutron flux) that do not require steady flow for the neutron current. Using the exponential exposure distribution rho (tau) =G exp(-tau/tau0) and recently calculated temperature-dependent beta-decay rates, comparison of several key branches yields the following average conditions for the solar-system S-process environment: Tapprox. =3.1 x 108 K, n/subn/approx. =1.6 x 107 neutrons cm-3. For tau0=0.25 n mb-1 we find that …
Grains Of Anomalous Isotopic Composition From Novae, Donald D. Clayton, Fred Hoyle
Grains Of Anomalous Isotopic Composition From Novae, Donald D. Clayton, Fred Hoyle
Publications
We study the effects of grain formation in nova ejecta with double purpose: (1) to schematically model the optical and infrared luminosities, (2) to identify the anomalies of isotopic composition that should be present in large abundance in these grains. The large carbon concentration makes the rapid and efficient grain formation possible, and accounts for the peculiar luminosities observed in Nova Serpentis 1970. In the anticipated range of nova conditions, rapid addition of hot protons during the outburst produces large overabundances of 13C, 18O, 22Na, 26Al, 30Si, and perhaps others. Anomalous 14C is expected subsequent to the 13C (α,n)16O reaction, …

Membrane Flow During Pinocytosis: A Stereologic Analysis, Ralph M. Steinman, Scott E. Brodie, Zanvil A. Cohn
Publications
HRP has been used as a cytochemical marker for a sterelogic analysis of pinocytic vesicles and secondary lysosomes in cultivated macrophages and L cells. Evidence is presented that the diaminobenzidine technique (a) detects all vaculoes containing encyme and (b) distinguishes between incoming pinocytic vesicles and those which have fused with pre-existing lysosomes to form secondary lososomes. The HRP reactive pinocytic vesicle spaces fills completely within 5 min after exposure to enzyme, while the secondary lysosome compartment is saturated in 45-60 min. The size distribution of sectioned (profile) vaculoe diameters was measured at equilibrium and converted to actual (spherical) dimensions using …

Solar Models Of Low Neutrino-Counting Rate: The Central Black Hole, Donald D. Clayton, Eliahu Dwek, Michael J. Newman, Raymond J. Talbot Jr.
Publications
Partial evolutionary sequences have been calculated for several solar models with central black holes of the order of one hundred-thousandth of a solar mass. If these are assumed to radiate their Eddington-limiting luminosity, the central temperature is depressed to the extent that the predicted count rate for the Cl-36 solar neutrino experiment nears the current upper limit of 1 SNU. This occurs when the auxiliary energy source provides about half of the solar luminosity. Count rates below this limit would result from an even larger black-hole luminosity. Consequences for stellar evolution of the occasional presence of black holes inside normal …

Extinct Radioactivities: Trapped Residuals Of Presolar Grains, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The xenon anomalies trapped in meteorites and the moon may have first been trapped in circumstellar grains formed in or outside of postexplosive stars. In that case, the initial solar nebula need not have contained most of their radioactive progenitors, and this would necessitate major revision of the history of solar system formation.

Solar Models Of Low Neutrino-Counting Rate: The Depleted Maxwellian Tail, Donald D. Clayton, Eliahu Dwek, Michael J. Newman, Raymond J. Talbot Jr.
Publications
Evolutionary sequences for the sun are presented which confirm that the Cl-37 neutrino counting rate will be greatly reduced if the high-energy tail of the Maxwellian distribution of relative energies is progressively depleted. Thermonuclear reaction rates and pressure are reevaluated for a distribution function modified by the correction factor suggested by Clayton (1974), and the effect of the results on solar models calculated with a simple Henyey code is discussed. It is shown that if the depletion is characterized by a certain exponential dependence on the distribution function, the counting rate will fall below 1 SNU for a distribution function …

Publications
We calculate the composite spectrum of γ-rays resulting from the decay of 56Ni to 56Co to 56Fe throughout the history of the universe. The results for several cosmological models are presented and compared with the Apollo 15 measurements at low resolution of the cosmic background. The radioactivity background is a significant fraction of the total, and several of its features may be detectable.
