Identification Of A Novel Cell Type In Peripheral Lymphoid Organs Of Mice. Iv. Identification And Distribution In Mouse Spleen, Ralph M. Steinman, Judy Adams, Zanvil A. Cohn

White pulp nodules of mouse spleen contain a minor population of cells with morphologic features that are identical to those of dendritic cells, a cell type recently described in vitro. They have characteristic large, irregularly shaped nuclei with distinctive chromatin patterns and small nucleoli. The cytoplasm is extended in processes that contain relatively few organelles. These presumptive dendritic cells can be distinguished from other cell types that are known to exist in spleen including those that have irregular or branching cell shapes. In particular, dendritic cells do not contain the large number of lysosomes seen in phagocytes, and do not …

S-Process Studies: Exact Evaluation Of An Exponential Distrubution Of Exposures, Donald D. Clayton, Richard A. Ward
Publications
We show that the solution of the s-process chain can be easily evaluated exactly if the seed nuclei have been irradiated with an exponential distribution of exposures. For the same distribution of exposures, the shape of the akNk curve past the last seed is independent of the distribution of seed nuclei. Evaluation of these results confirms the accuracy of the well-known CFHZ approximation.
Thermonuclear Astrophysics, Donald D. Clayton, Stanford E. Woosley
Thermonuclear Astrophysics, Donald D. Clayton, Stanford E. Woosley
Publications
We discuss the types of thermonuclear reactions that are of importance to stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis, with particular attention to the explosive ejection of shells of He, C, O, and Si. We present tables of the reactions important in the various burning phases, including the reason for their importance and an estimate of the value of a carefully measured rate. This format is chosen for dual purpose: (1) to clarify the nuclear needs by evaluating the importance of specific reactions within the astronomical settings and (2) by assigning a value scale for cross-section measurements.

The pattern of abundances within the iron-abundance peak of the solar system is analyzed for various Cr, Fe, and Ni abundances, and a method is developed for finding the best fit to a given set of abundances with a chosen number of zones, i.e., mass contributions characterized by differing values of eta. This material can be synthesized by a superposition of e-process compositions in a low-eta region (eta = 0.003) and a high-eta region (eta = 0.065 -0.080) with at least 85% coming from the low-eta region. Addition of a third eta zone is unproductive. The applicability of the particle-poor …

S-Process Studies: Exact Solution To A Chain Having Two Distinct Cross-Section Values, Donald D. Clayton, Michael J. Newman
Publications
We present the exact solution to an s-process chain having two distinct values for the cross-sections. The comparison of this exact solution with the CFHZ approximate solution to the same problem reveals that approximate solution to be adequate for most astrophysical problems.
Nucelosynthesis In White-Dwarf Atmospheres, Fred Hoyle, Donald D. Clayton
Nucelosynthesis In White-Dwarf Atmospheres, Fred Hoyle, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
Consideration of events by which both s- and r-process nucleosynthesis may occur on the surfaces of white-dwarf stars. The main requirement is that the accreted hydrogen be mixed with comparable numbers of C-12 (or other alpha nuclei) before a runaway capture of protons takes place. Subsequent events offer many possibilities for nucleosynthesis and stars of peculiar composition. A new mechanism for a surface s-process due to few-MeV protons is also described. Concluding comments concern cosmic gamma-ray bursts and the origin of anomalous low-energy galactic cosmic rays.

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Omaha-Council Bluffs Tax Border Issue."
Recently governmental administrators and politicians of Omaha have voiced concern over the sales losses that might result because of Iowa's exemption of food purchases from the retail sales tax--a measure which took effect July 1, 1974.1
Generally, it is felt that a sales tax rate differential between two border cities will influence sales as favorable rate differentials are reduced or unfavorable rate differentials are created or widened. However, the magnitude of the problem will depend on many factors, e.g., location of major shopping facilities, distance, …
Development Of The Rio Grande Compact, Raymond A. Hill
Development Of The Rio Grande Compact, Raymond A. Hill
Publications
Thirty-six years have elapsed since the Rio Grande Compact of 1938, N.M.S.A. Section 75-34-3 (Repl. 1968), was entered into by Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas, and approved by the United States of America. Administration of the Compact since then has been the responsibility of many different persons, few of whom had personal knowledge of the circumstances of the negotiation of this Compact. Consequently, there has been a growing tendency towards interpretation of some of the provisions of the Rio Grande Compact in a manner contrary to the intent of those who participated in its negotiation.
Mr. Hill has intimately connected …
Line 57co Gamma Rays: New Diagnostic Of Supernova Structure, Donald D. Clayton
Line 57co Gamma Rays: New Diagnostic Of Supernova Structure, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The nuclear gamma-ray lines emitted when 57Co decays to 57Fe should be detectable for several years following Galactic supernovae, and the time structure of their intensity relative to those emitted following the 56Ni and 56Co decays can reveal the structure of the exploding star. An analysis of a simplified analytic model is presented as an example.

Pinocytosis In Fibroblasts: Quantitative Studies In Vitro, Ralph M. Steinman, Jonathan M. Silver, Zanvil A. Cohn
Publications
Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used as a marker to determine the rate of ongoing pinocytosis in several fibroblast cell lines. The enzyme was interiorized in the fluid phase without evidence of adsorption to the cell surface. Cytochemical reaction product was not found on the cell surface and was visualized only within intracellular vesicles and granules. Uptake was directly proportional to the administered concentration of HRP and to the duration of exposure. The rate of HRP uptake was 0.0032-0.0035% of the administered load per 106 cells per hour for all cells studied with one exception: L cells, after reaching confluence, progressively …

Nuclear Gamma Rays From 7li In The Galactic Cosmic Radiation, G J. Fishman, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The observation of a y-ray line feature from the direction of the galactic center by Johnson, Harnden, and Haymes is interpreted as the 478-keV nuclear de-excitation of low-energy 7Li cosmic rays as they inelastically scatter from the interstellar gas. The prediction of an associated line at 432 keV is proposed as a definitive test of this idea.
An Analysis Of Effective Property Tax Rates In The City Of Omaha, Ralph H. Todd
An Analysis Of Effective Property Tax Rates In The City Of Omaha, Ralph H. Todd
Publications
Concern over the nature and extent of local property tax rate variation is not uncommon. Yet published empirical evidence is practically nonexistent. This is especially so when intrajurisdictional comparisons are made. This study was undertaken to shed light on this issue as it relates to census tracts and housing markets in the City of Omaha.
The general conclusions of the study suggest : (1) there exists substantial inequality in the levying of property taxes between housing market areas, hereafter referred t o as HMA's, (2) there is a lack of uniformity in tax assessments, and (3) the property tax , …

Hydrostatic Oxygen Burning In Stars. Ii. Oxygen Burning At Balanced Pwer, S E. Woosley, W David Arnett, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The nucleosynthesis that occurs during hydrostatic oxygen burning in a "typical" stellar zone is examined in detail under the assumption that such stellar zones are in an approximate state of balanced power from 160 + 160 energy generation and from neutrino (or photon) energy loss. Special attention is paid to the amount of neutron enrichment that occurs and the implications for nucleosynthesis theory. Accuracy of a common approximation for 160 + 160 energy generation is discussed also. Theoretical models which assume the existence of a direct e- coupling in the weak interaction give results that are more consistent with current …

Nucelosynthesis Of Rare Nuclei From Seed Nuclei In Explosive Carbon Burning, W Michael Howard, W David Arnett, Donald D. Clayton, Stanford E. Woosley
Publications
We demonstrate that a Population I concentration of primordial heavy seed nuclei, when present in the carbon- and oxygewrich core of the presupernova star and exposed to the temperature and free nucleon densities of explosive carbon burning, is efficiently transmuted into the rare species 365, 40K, 43Ar, 43Ca, 46Ca, 48Ca, 405c, 45Ti, 0Ti, 50V, 62Ni, 64Ni, 68Zn, 70Zn, and 76Ge in approximately their solar-system abundance ratios. If the temperature is high enough (T0 2.1) that at least 10 percent of the Fe and Ni seed nuclei undergo (p, ) reactions during the explosion, the nuclei 60Cu, 63Zn, 71Ga, 73Ce, and …

Weak S-Process Irradiations, James G. Peters, William A. Fowler, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
We calculate the overabundances of rare neutron-rich species produced when seed nuclei between silicon and nickel are exposed to small neutron irradiations in order to ascertain whether those species may owe their natural abundances to such a cause, Particular attention is given to 54Cr and 58Fe, two relatively prominent neutron-rich species that have been bypassed by calculation of explosive nucleosynthesis. Although it is possible that 58Fe is due to weak s-processes, it seems unlikely that 54Cr can be produced along with it because its calculated overabundance is so much less than that of 55Fe. Uncertainties in key neutron-capture cross-sections do …
The Interaction Of Soluble Horseradish Peroxidase With Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages In Vitro, Ralph M. Steinman, Zanvil A. Cohn
The Interaction Of Soluble Horseradish Peroxidase With Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages In Vitro, Ralph M. Steinman, Zanvil A. Cohn
Publications
The in vitro interaction of soluble horseradish peroxidase (HRP) with homogeneous mono layers of mouse macrophages has been studied using sensitive biochemical and cytochemical techniques. The compartmentalization of HRP in extracellular and intracellular sites has been quantitatively evaluated. A significant fraction is bound to a serum-drived layer, which coats the surface of culture vessels and may be removed by appropriate washes. Macrophages interiorize HRP as a solute in pinocytic vesicles without appreciable binding of the glycoprotein to the plasma membrane. Uptake is directly proportional to the concentration of HRP in the culture medium. 1 X 106 cells ingest 0.0025% …

The Interaction Of Particulate Horseradish Peroxidase (Hrp)-Anti Hrp Immune Complexes With Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages In Vitro, Ralph M. Steinman, Zanvil A. Cohn
Publications
The uptake, distribution, and fate of particulate horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-anti HRP aggregates has been studied in homogeneous monolayers of mouse macrophages in vitro. Macrophages rapidly interiorize the immune complexes after binding to the cell surface. The rate of interiorization is maximal for complexes formed in a broad zone of 4-fold antibody excess to equivalence and corresponds to a rate of 10% of the administered load/106 cells per hour. This rate is 4000-fold greater than the uptake of soluble HRP. The binding and endocytosis of HRP-anti HRP by macrophages is mediated by the trypsin insensitive Fc, receptor. Cytochemically, …

Explosive Nucleosynthesis In Helium Zones, W M. Howard, W David Arnett, Donald D. Clayton
Explosive Nucleosynthesis In Helium Zones, W M. Howard, W David Arnett, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
We study by numerical integration the network of nuclear reactions that are expected to occur when the helium zones of a star are instantaneously heated and allowed to expand adiabatically. The dependence of the results on nuclear cross-sections, on the peak temperature, and on the time scale of the hydrodynamic expansion are discussed. Of particular interest is the result that the nucleus `4N, constituting about 2 percent by mass following the earlier operation of the CNO cycle, is substantially converted into 150, 15F, 15Ne, and 21Ne in ratios close to the solar abundances of 55N, 80, 55F, and 21Ne. It …
