A Follow-Up Study Of The Goodrich Scholarship Program, The University Of Nebraska At Omaha, Wilda C. Stephenon
A Follow-Up Study Of The Goodrich Scholarship Program, The University Of Nebraska At Omaha, Wilda C. Stephenon
Publications
In 1972 the Goodrich Amendment to the state appropriation for the University of Nebraska at Omaha gave the University an "unparalleled opportunity" to develop further its educational offerings and services to students from low-income backgrounds. The intent of the amendment was to make funds available "for a program to get economically deprived young people in and through UNO." Named for State Senator Glenn Goodrich who introduced the legislation, the program was designed to provide an intellectually stimulating academic course of study augmented by whatever supportive services were needed. It would aid achievement rather than provide a remedial program to prepare …

A best set of neutron-capture cross sections has been evaluated for the most important s-process isotopes. With this data base, s-process studies have been carried out using the traditional model which assumes a steady neutron flux and an exponential distribution of neutron irradiations. The calculated sigma-N curve is in excellent agreement with the empirical sigma-N-values of pure s-process nuclei. Simultaneously, good agreement is found between the difference of solar and s-process abundances and the abundances of pure r-process nuclei. The abundance pattern of the iron group elements where s-process results complement the abundances obtained from explosive nuclear burning is discussed. …

The Cyclic Stocking Of Parentals In A Farm Pond To Produce A Population Of Male Bluegill X Female Green Sunfish F1 Hybrids And Male Redear Sunfish X Female Green Sunfish F1 Hybrids, Kenneth F. Kurzawski, Roy C. Heidinger
Publications
A population of male bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) x female green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) F1 hybrids was established by parental stocking in a southern Illinois farm pond containing male redear sunfish (Lepomis microlophus) x female green sunfish F1 hybrids and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). In 1967, male redear sunfish and female green sunfish parentals, along with fingerling bass, were stocked into a new farm pond. Nine years later in 1976, male bluegill and female green sunfish were stocked into the same pond. At the time of sampling in the fall of …

We have tested the ability of several types of trinitrophenyl (TNP)-labeled Ia+ cells to induce contact hypersensitivity (CS) after intravenous injection. Most labeled cell types (spleen cells, splenic macrophages, various types of peritoneal-exudate cells) not only fail to induce CS after this type of inoculation but, rather, activate T suppressor cells leading to specific immunological tolerance. Occasionally, some of these immunizing cells managed to bypass the T suppressor system and induced CS. In these cases the response was short-lived and could be blocked by concomitant injection of trinitrobenzelsulphonic acid (TNBS), a potent inducer of T suppressor cells. In sharp …

Intralysosomal Accumulation Of Polyanions. I. Fusion Of Pinocytic And Phagocytic Vacuoles With Secondary Lysosomes, Margaret Carol Kielian, Ralph M. Steinman, Zanvil A. Cohn
Publications
The long-term exposure of macrophages to low concentrations of a number of polyanions leads to their accumulation in high concentration within secondary lysosomes. This was associated with enlargement of the lysosomes, the presence of membranous whorls, and intense toluidine blue staining of the organelles at pH 1.0. After the ingestion of a particulate load by these cells, newly formed phagocytic vacuoles failed to fuse with polyanion-laden lysosomes. The lack of fusion was evident in both fluorescence and electron micrographic studies which followed the transfer of acridine orange or Thorotrast from 2° lysosomes to phagosomes. Agents that inhibited phagosome-lysosome (P-L) fusion …

Human Dendritic Cells. Enrichment And Characterization From Peripheral Blood, Wesley C. Voorhis, Laura S. Hair, Ralph M. Steinman, Gilla Kaplan

Previous studies demonstrated that lymphoid tissues of mice and rats contain small numbers (<1% of nucleated cells) of dendritic cells (DC) with special cytologic surface, and functional properties. We show here that similar DC represent 0.1-0.5% of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. DC can be enriched to 20-60% purity by a multistep procedure analogous to that used in mice. Adherent peripheral blood mononuclear cells are cultured overnight, and the released cells are depleted of monocytes and B cells by readherence to plastic, rosetting with erythrocytes coated with anti-human IgG, and centrifugation in dense albumin columns. Enriched DC have similar cytologic features to rodent DC by light and electron microscopy. DC express HLA, and HLA-DR and the leukocyte-common antigens. They lack phagocytic capacity, receptors for antibody-coated and neuraminidase-treated erythrocytes, surface and intracellular Ig, esterase, peroxidase, and azurophilic granules. DC do not react with several monoclonal antibodies directed to phagocytes (OKM 1, 'mac-1,' 63D3, and 61D3) and T cells (OKT 3, 6, 8). Unlike the mouse, human DC express complement receptors. When maintained in culture for 4 d, human DC did not give rise to either B cells or monocytes. Therefore, DC identified by cytologic criteria are distinct from other leukocytes. Enriched populations of DC have been compared to fractions enriched in monocytes, B cells, and T cells in three functional assays: stimulation of the primary allogeneic mixed leukocyte reaction, stimulation of the primary syngeneic MLR, and accessory function for the proliferation of periodate-modified T cells. In each case, the DC fraction was 10-fold or more active than other cell fractions. We conclude that DC circulate in man, and represent the principal cell type-required for the initiation of several immune responses.

Origin Of Ca-Al-Rich Inclusions. Ii. Sputtering And Collisions In The Three-Phase Interstellar Medium, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The theory put forward by Clayton (1977) for the formation of the Ca-Al-rich inclusions within C3 meteorites is extended to an evolutionary history in a three-phase interstellar medium. Widespread supersonic turbulence in the hot interstellar medium is maintained by supernova shock waves, giving rise to heavy sputtering of the refractory dust. Subsequent reaccumulation with varying dust/gas ratios or varying particle sizes produces isotopically fractionated Ca-Al-rich accumulates. It is thought that the Ca-Al-rich inclusions themselves are formed by the following sequence in the solar system: (1) cold accumulation of larger-than-average Ca-Al-rich particles containing supernova condensate cores into macroscopic (approximately 1 cm) …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Broadening the Sales Tax Base in Nebraska," by H. Wade German and Mary D. Sianis.
With the demand for state and local government services increasing at a rate greater than most present tax structures can accommodate, either additional resources must be shifted from the private to the public sector, or public services must be adjusted within tax revenue expectations. The recent debates surrounding the extension of the additional one-half percent sales tax in Omaha and the continuing public pressure to minimize the burden of taxation highlight the basic problem that, at …

Social and economic changes during the past two decades have contributed to a substantial increase in the number of women participating in the American work force. The women's movement, for example, has increased the social acceptability of married women working outside the home and has raised single and married women's professional expectations and opportunities. From an economic perspective, inflation has probably motivated more married women to seek employment, and, at least until the past few years, the American economy has been healthy enough to provide jobs for most of them.

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Omaha Area Demographic Change 1970-80," by David R. DiMartino; compilations by Jim Farho; and cartography by Jason Chen and Eric Myers.
Data from the 1980 Census ofPopu· lation and Housing are confirming and adding detail to the anticipated demographic trends of the 1970's. This issue of the Review examines those demographic trends for Omaha and Douglas County. With 311,681 people in 1980, Omaha included nearly one-fifth (19.9 percent) of Nebraska's 1,5 70,006 people. Furthermore, Douglas County included one-quarter (25.3 percent) of the state's population, and the Nebraska portion of the Omaha …

Chemical Energy In Cold-Cloud Aggregated: The Origin Of Meteoritic Chondrules, Donald D. Clayton
Chemical Energy In Cold-Cloud Aggregated: The Origin Of Meteoritic Chondrules, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
If interstellar particles and molecules accumulate into larger particles during the collapse of a cold cloud, the resulting aggregates contain a large store of internal chemical energy. It is here proposed that subsequent warming of these accumulates leads to a thermal runaway when exothermic chemical reactions begin within the aggregate. These, after cooling, are the crystalline chondrules found so abundantly within chondritic meteorites. Chemical energy can also heat meteoritic parent bodies of any size, and both thermal metamorphism and certain molten meteorites are proposed to have occurred in this way. If this new theory is correct, (1) the model of …
