Food Preferences, Food Intake, And Growth Of The F1 Hybrid Of Grass Carp ♀ X Bighead Carp ♂, Leroy M. Young, James P. Monaghan, Roy C. Heidinger

Publications

Hybrid carp from the cross grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella ♀ X bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis ♂ preferred filamentous algae and Najas guadalupensis over Ceratophyllum demersum. Medium-sized (273 g) and large hybrids (360 g) consumed more plant material and grew faster than small hybrids (77 g) at 14 and 22 C in aquaria. Aquarium data suggest that it will require at least twice as many hybrids as grass carp of the same size to obtain the same level of vegetation control.

Discovery Of S-Process Nd In Allende Residue, Donald D. Clayton Aug 1983

Discovery Of S-Process Nd In Allende Residue, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

New interpretation is given to the isotopic anomalies detected by Lugmair et al. in an acid-resistant residue of the Allende meteorite. If the 142Nd excess is due to 146Sm decay, as the discoverers proposed, the author argues that the decay has occurred in interstellar grains, so that the conclusion that 146Sm (1.03×108 yr) was alive in the solar system is premature. It is shown that the discovery is likely to be s-process Nd, confirming the survival of red-giant stardust in carbonaceous interstellar dust.

Anatomy Of Motor Axons To Direct Flight Muscles In Drosophila, David G. King, Mark A. Tanouye Jul 1983

Anatomy Of Motor Axons To Direct Flight Muscles In Drosophila, David G. King, Mark A. Tanouye

Publications

The direct flight muscles of Drosophila melanogaster are innervated by the anterior dorsal mesothoracic (ADM) nerve and the mesothoracic accessory (MAC) nerve. Each of the four conspicuously large axons in the ADM nerve serves one of the muscles designated pal, pa3, pa4 and pa5. Muscle pa4 is additionally innervated by a very small neurosecretory axon. Muscle pa6, also innervated by the ADM nerve, receives at least one small nerve fibre but no large axon. Muscle pa2 is innervated by a large axon from the MAC nerve. Large motor axons, identified by serial section tracing …

Operational Comparison Of Three Electrofishing Systems, Roy C. Heidinger, D R. Helms, T I. Hiebert, P H. Howe

Publications

Three different electrofishing systems were compared to determine their relative efficiency with respect to species and numbers of fish collected. These results indicated that modifications or changes in electrofishing gear during a monitoring program should not be made unless it can be demonstrated that collecting efficiency is not altered.

Extinct Radioactivities: A Three-Phase Mixing Model, Donald D. Clayton May 1983

Extinct Radioactivities: A Three-Phase Mixing Model, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

A new class of models is advanced for interpreting the relationship of radioactive abundances in the early solar system to their average concentration in the interstellar medium. The model assumes that fresh radioactivities are ejected from supernovae into the hot interstellar medium, and that the time scales for changes of phase into molecular clouds determine how much survives for formation therein of our solar system. A more realistic and physically motivated understanding of the low observed concentrations of 129I, 244Pu, and 107Pd may result.

Review Of Applied Urban Research 1983, Vol. 11, No. 02, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "An Economic Profile of the Omaha Office Space Market," by Donald A. Nielsen.

During the first half of the twentieth century, the distance between residence and worksite tended to increase in most American cities for white collar office workers and managers. This was due to increases in real income, improvements in transportation networks, and the increased availability of the auto· mobile to the middle income class, all of which correlated with the purchase of new homes in the suburbs. Traditionally, the journey to work took the labor force from their homes …

Membrane Proteins Of The Vacuolar System. Iii. Further Studies On The Composition And Recycling Of Endocytic Vacuole Membrane In Cultured Macrophages, William A. Muller Jan 1983

Membrane Proteins Of The Vacuolar System. Iii. Further Studies On The Composition And Recycling Of Endocytic Vacuole Membrane In Cultured Macrophages, William A. Muller

Publications

In previous publications, we found that the membrane of macrophage phagolysosomes could be selectively radioiodinated in living cells. The technique required phagocytosis of lactoperoxidase covalently coupled to latex spheres (LPO-latex), followed by iodination on ice with Na125I and hydrogen peroxide. In this paper, we use the LPO-latex system to further analyze the composition and recycling of phagocytic vacuole membrane. Three approaches were employed to examine the polypeptide composition of the phagolysosome (PL) and plasma membranes (PM). The efficiency of intracellular iodination was increased by increasing lysosomal pH with chloroquine. By one-dimensional SDS PAGE, the heavily labeled chloroquine-treated PL …

Internalization And Degradation Of Macrophage Fc Receptors During Receptor-Mediated Phagocytosis, Ira S. Mellman, Helen Plutner, Ralph M. Steinman Jan 1983

Internalization And Degradation Of Macrophage Fc Receptors During Receptor-Mediated Phagocytosis, Ira S. Mellman, Helen Plutner, Ralph M. Steinman

Publications

Macrophage receptors for the Fc domain of immunoglobulin G (IgG) can mediate the efficient binding and phagocytosis of IgG-coated particles. After internalization, phagocytic vacuoles fuse with lysosomes, initiating the degradation of their contents. Using specific monoclonal and polyclonal antireceptor antibodies, we have now analyzed the internalization and fate of Fc receptors during the uptake of IgG-coated erythrocytes and erythrocyte ghosts by mouse peritoneal macrophages. Receptor-mediated phagocytosis led to the selective and largely irreversible removal of Fc receptors (>50%) from the macrophage plasma membrane. The expression of several other plasma membrane proteins (including a receptor for complement), recognized by a …

Clear Writing For Public Administrators: A Refresher Workshop, Richard Streckfuss

Publications

Since you have been writing for years and since you have had many hours of classroom instruction in writing, you have a right to be skeptical about a writing workshop. What can be accomplished in a few hours that could not be accomplished in the preceding hundreds?

That question has been the guiding principle behind this material. The most promising approach seemed to lie in comparing the work of professional writers with amateurs. To this end, the writing of a dozen public administrators was compared to the writing of authors published in such works as Harper's, Smithsonian, INC, Nation's Business, …

Section 14(E) Of The Williams Act And The Rule 10b-5 Comparisons, Mark J. Loewenstein Jan 1983

Section 14(E) Of The Williams Act And The Rule 10b-5 Comparisons, Mark J. Loewenstein

Publications

The passage of the Williams Act in 1968 added a set of provisions to the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 to govern tender offers. In this article, Professor Loewenstein examines the antifraud provision of the Williams Act, codified as section 14(e) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and the development of decisional law under it. After discussing the propriety of inferring a private cause of action from section 14(e), Professor Loewenstein argues that the judiciary's reliance on rule 10b-5 precedents to set the bounds of the 14(e) cause of action is unwarranted. He concludes: 1) that scienter should not …
