Positron Annihilation Gamma Rays From Novae, M D. Leising, Donald D. Clayton
Positron Annihilation Gamma Rays From Novae, M D. Leising, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The potential for observing annihilation gamma rays from novae is investigated. These gamma rays, a unique signature of the thermonuclear runaway models of novae, would result from the annihilation of positrons emitted by beta(+)-unstable nuclei produced near the peak of the runaway and carried by rapid convection to the surface of the nova envelope. Simple models, which are extensions of detailed published models, of the expansion of the nova atmospheres are evolved. These models serve as input into investigations of the fate of nearby Galactic fast novae could yield detectable fluxes of electron-positron annihilation gamma rays produced by the decay …

Fy Aquilae And The Gamma-Ray Burst Event Of 1979 March 31, Dieter H. Hartmann, Richard W. Pogge
Publications
We present deep CCD images, spectrophotometry, and astrometry of the variable star FY Awuilae, which is located within the error box of the 1979 March 31 gamma-ray burst event. Deep red CCD images reveal that FY Aql is surrounded by a faint, extended nebulosity centred of the variable star. Spectrophotometry of FY Aql and its nebulosity suggests that it is an M4e III Mira variable star embedded in an extended reflection nebula. We argue that there is a present no compelling observational evidence to suggest that this system is the optical counterpart of the 1979 March 31 gamma-ray burst.

Galactic Chemical Evolution: Z Versus In(1/Mu) Relationship, Donald D. Clayton
Galactic Chemical Evolution: Z Versus In(1/Mu) Relationship, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The ways in which a radial abundance gradient in a disk galaxy may be interpreted are reexamined, asking how metallicity Z depends upon gas mass fraction mu in analytic models characterized by a temporally varying history of metal-poor infall. Six different such models are studied, and it is shown that the metallicity versus gas fraction relationship is well approximated by an expression which is the analog of the Z = y ln(1/mu) relation for closed evolution. The approximation appears valid when the infall rate is nonneglible, but not so great that it dominates the gas budget.

Microcomputers In City Hall: Case Studies Of Their Uses And Effects, Donald F. Norris, Vincent J. Webb
Microcomputers In City Hall: Case Studies Of Their Uses And Effects, Donald F. Norris, Vincent J. Webb
Publications
Microcomputers first appeared on the commercial marketplace in 1976. Since then, an estimated 40 million microcomputers have been sold and more are being sold each day. A survey conducted in 1982 found that 13 percent of American cities owned microcomputers and that 35 percent planned to buy one or more microcomputers within two years (Norris and Webb, 1984). A follow-up survey conducted three years later found that between 75 percent and 90 percent of city governments owned microcomputers (Scoggins, 1986).

Vexar Seedling Protectors Did Not Reduce Nutria Damage To Planted Baldcypress Seedlings, William Conner, John R. Toliver
Publications
Vexar seedling protectors were tested for preventing nutria damage to baldcypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich) seedlings planted in Louisiana
swamp forests. Five areas were planted with 1-year-old baldcypress seedlings. Half the seedlings in each area were protected with Vexar seedling protectors. The protectors slowed down the rate of destruction in some areas, but after 3 months, 85% of the guarded seedlings and 87% of the unguarded seedlings were destroyed.
Religion, Rights And Difference In The Early Woman's Rights Movement, Elizabeth B. Clark
Religion, Rights And Difference In The Early Woman's Rights Movement, Elizabeth B. Clark
Publications
The meeting of feminists at Seneca Falls in July of 1848 marked the nominal beginning of the movement which in the nineteenth century was labeled "woman's rights." For us that term has become commonly interchangeable with "suffrage," and we often assume that "woman's rights" describes a seventy-odd year campaign to gain civil and political power and protection from a government which -- although it had perpetrated outrages against women and blacks -- had an unquestioned legitimacy as the guarantor and enforcer of rights.

Interstellar Fossil 26mg And Its Possible Relationship To Excess Meteoritic 26mg, Donald D. Clayton
Interstellar Fossil 26mg And Its Possible Relationship To Excess Meteoritic 26mg, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
A plausible scenario is advanced for explainig a linear correlation found in some solar system solids between their Mg-26/Mg-24 isotopic ratios and their Al/Mg elemental abundance ratios. This scenario involves three stages: (1) the mechanical aggregation of an average ensemble of Al-bearing dust particles that is postulated to be modestly enriched in the Al/Mg abundance ratio because the aggregated particles themselves are; (2) the extraction, perhaps but not necessarily by hot distillation, of almost all Mg, leaving an aggregate with a large Al/Mg ratio and a large Mg-26 excess; and (3) the uptake of normal ambient Mg by the resulting …

Secondary Metallicity In Analytic Models Of Chemical Evolution Of Galaxies, Donald D. Clayton, Irani Pantelaki
Secondary Metallicity In Analytic Models Of Chemical Evolution Of Galaxies, Donald D. Clayton, Irani Pantelaki
Publications
Analytic models of the chemical evolution of galactic regions that grow in mass owing to the continuous infall of matter are characterized, emphasizing the solutions for secondary nuclei (defined as those nuclei whose stellar yields are proportional to the abundance of a primary seed nucleus) in the families of models described by Clayton (1984 and 1985). Wide variations in time dependence of both primary and secondary nuclei as well as in the ratio of secondary to primary are displayed by these model families, confirming again the usefulness of these families as interpretive guides if galaxies do in fact evolve with …

Preliminary Study Of The Homeless In Omaha-Douglas County, Jeff Luke
Preliminary Study Of The Homeless In Omaha-Douglas County, Jeff Luke
Publications
Homelessness is not a new phenomenon. The period between the Civil War and World War I, for example, witnessed a large increase in predominantly male transients who followed an active labor market and formed a highly visible subcommunity called skid row. Today's homeless population, however, includes more women, children, and minorities and fewer single men and drifters than previous populations. In addition to changes in the demographic composition of the homeless population, most experts agree that the problem of homelessness is increasing.
