Evolution Of Feeding And Case-Making Behavior In Trichoptera, John S. Weaver Iii, John C. Morse Jan 1986

Evolution Of Feeding And Case-Making Behavior In Trichoptera, John S. Weaver Iii, John C. Morse

Publications

A phylogeny of the families of Trichoptera is reviewed to provide a basis for understanding the probable evolution of feeding tactics and case or retreat constructions by larvae. At lease 48 hierarchically inclusive homologues are known, mostly from larval, pupal, and adult morphology. Their resulting phylogeny indicates that Rhyacophilidae, Hydrobiosidae, Glossosomatidae, and Hydroptilidae are more closely related to Philopotamidae, Hydropsychidae, and their allies than to Limnephilidae, Leptoceridae, and their allies. This phylogeny implies that the ancestral caddisfly larva was probably a tube-dwelling detritivore, inhabiting humus and detrial mats near the shores of lentic or lotic-depositional habitats. This ancestor evolved into …

The Trail Of Education In Two Cities: Omaha And Manila, Navidad T. Nacianceno, Floyd T. Waterman Dec 1985

The Trail Of Education In Two Cities: Omaha And Manila, Navidad T. Nacianceno, Floyd T. Waterman

Publications

Never, perhaps, in the history of local communities has the educational system been recognized openly as being interwoven with the community as it is now. In individuals' aspiration, for better lives and as a primary component of the equation of education and community, education is viewed as an avenue of promise. There can be no doubt of its universal acceptance as the key to the most fervently desired goals, security for the future and an understanding of self and others.

Publications

Throughout the nation, most individuals with severe disabilities are unemployed and reside with their parents, or they are in institutions, segregated work activity centers, or sheltered workshops. Today, many youths leave public schools and find that vocational training or employment opportunities are not available.

As we studied these programs, it became clear to us that most of these programs have some intrinsic values and that it would not be practical or advisable for us to evaluate the programs, Instead of rating programs, we selected programs that met at least one of our ten critical factors for program selection, and many of them met several. Our decisions were also based on a desire to present a variety of programs, especially those that seemed to be appropriate for program planners in Nebraska.

We thought that it would be best to have program personnel describe their programs. …

Angular Distribution Of Interstellar Al-26, Mark D. Leising, Donald D. Clayton Jul 1985

Angular Distribution Of Interstellar Al-26, Mark D. Leising, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

The angular distribution and local concentration of interstellar Al-26 are calculated for five theoretical models of its origin, as a guide for future observations. The models considered relate Al-26 to current star formation (with surface CO density as its indicator), treat Al-26 as a secondary-nucleosynthesis product on seed nuclei with the same metallicity gradient as O, assume the Al-26 ejection rate is proportional to present light output, make Al-26 synthesis depend on total H I + H2 gas density, or assume that Al-26 is formed mainly in novae. The local decay and production rates for the five models are found …

The Frontal Hydraulic Head: A Micro-Α Scale (~1 Km) Triggering Mechanism For Mesoconvective Weather Systems, M. A. Shapiro, Tamara Hampel, Doris Rotzoll, F. Mosher

Publications

Measurements from the NOAA Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) 300 m tower, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Sabreliner aircraft, and the NOAA GOES-5 satellite, give evidence for the cross-front scale collapse of nonprecipitating surface cold-frontal zones to horizontal distances of ∼1 km or less. The leading edges of these frosts possess the characteristic structure of density current flows: an elevated hydraulic head followed by a turbulent wake. Vertical motions at the frontal heads exceed 5 m s−1 at 300 m (AGL). The ascent at the frontal head may act as a (∼1 km-scale) triggering mechanism for the release of …

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "The Omaha Office Space Market: 1980-1984," by Donald A. Nielsen and Murray Frost.

This article is an update of the Omaha office space market study that was published in the February, 1983 issue of the Review fl[ Applied Urban Research.1 The purpose of this article is to provide a profile of the spatial concentration of the Omaha office space market2 over the period 1980 through 1984 by examining the evolving spatial pattern of development as well as office space distribution delineated on the basis of zip code areas. It …

Astration Of Cosmological Deuterium, Donald D. Clayton Mar 1985

Astration Of Cosmological Deuterium, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

Attention is given to the degree of primordial deuterium's astration through the continuous galactic processes of star formation and chemical evolution. Exact analytic solutions are given for galactic chemical evolution when infall of constant composition occurs at a rate, f(t), which is presently defined. Solutions are given for the linear model with instantaneous recycling and with constant return fraction R. The results suggest that Big Bang D/H was at least three times larger than the largest values observed in today's solar neighborhood, and even larger if matter falling into the disk is already astrated.

Galactic Chemical Evolution And Nucleocosmochronology: Analytic Quadratic Models, Donald D. Clayton Jan 1985

Galactic Chemical Evolution And Nucleocosmochronology: Analytic Quadratic Models, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

The author presents a new analytic model of the chemical evolution of the galaxy. Explicit solutions for a gas mass, star mass, metallicity, and radiochronometers are obtained for models with parametrized galactic infall, and for which the star formation rate is proportional to the gas mass. Because all physically interesting observables have a simple explicit dependence on the parameters which themselves map a wide space of physical possibilites, the author suggests adopting this model as a reference standard for studies of chemical evolution.

A Comparison Of Murine Epidermal Langerhans Cells With Spleen Dendritic Cells, Gerold Schuler, Nikolaus Romani, Ralph M. Steinman Jan 1985

A Comparison Of Murine Epidermal Langerhans Cells With Spleen Dendritic Cells, Gerold Schuler, Nikolaus Romani, Ralph M. Steinman

Publications

To establish if epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) are related to spleen dendritic cells, we have considered the morphology, phenotype, and function of the 2 cell types in culture. Cultured LC could be partially enriched (up to 50%) on the basis of 2 simple physical properties: nonadherence to plastic, and low buoyant density in dense albumin columns. The morphology of cultured LC and spleen dendritic cells were similar. In particular both cell types had many cell processes and/or veils, and cultured LC lost their distinguishing Birbeck granules. Freshly isolated LC exhibited nonspecific esterase and ATPase, as well as the F4/80 (α-macrophage) …

Identification Of Immunostimulatory Dendritic Cells In The Synovial Effusions Of Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Nathan J. Zvaifler, Ralph M. Steinman, Gilla Kaplan

Publications

Dendritic cells in the circulation are leukocytes that are rich in Ia antigens and that actively stimulate T cell replication. We have identified dendritic cells in the joint effusions of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. By phase-contrast and immunofluorescence microscopy, synovial mononuclear cells contained 1-5% dendritic profiles that were rich in HLA-DR and DQ, had small amounts of C3bi receptor, and lacked a battery of monocyte and lymphocyte markers. These dendritic cells could be enriched to 60-80% purity by cytolytic depletion of monocytes and lymphocytes with a group of monoclonal antibodies (MAb) and complement. By transmission electron microscopy, the dendritic cell …
