Integrating Thoughtways: Re-Opening Of The Environmental Mind?, Lakshman Guruswamy
Publications
The implementation of environmental law and policy has assumed that pollution could be contained, corralled and interdicted within the medium (air, land, or water) in which unpleasant effects are encountered. Sweeping, but piecemeal, federal legislation in the 1970s aspired to create healthy air, together with fishable, swimmable and drinkable waters. Despite impressive gains, these goals have not been achieved. There have been painful failures, compounded by the mounting costs of environmental protection. While the need for environmental protection is generally accepted, the effectiveness and efficiency of regulation based on the legislation of the 1970s has been questioned in the 1980s. …

Star: A Computerized Tutorial In General Psychology, Barbara S. Chaparro, Charles G. Halcomb
Publications
This study investigated the use of a computerized tutorial--Self-Test and Review (STAR)--in a computer-managed general psychology course. STAR consists of four major modules which provide the student with a variety of learning exercises, including practice quizzes, practice final exams, performance reviews, and structured study questions. The purpose of the study was to determine whether students would choose STAR as a study tool, the effect of lecture versus self-paced settings on the use of STAR, whether students who used STAR would perform better than those who did not, and the effect of the timing of feedback in STAR on performance. Students …
Isotopic Anomalies: Chemical Memory Of Galactic Evolution, Donald D. Clayton
Isotopic Anomalies: Chemical Memory Of Galactic Evolution, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
New mechanisms for the chemical memory of isotopic anomalies are proposed which are based on the temporal change during the chemical evolution of the Galaxy of the isotopic composition of the mean ejecta from stars. Because of the differing temporal evolution of primary and secondary products of nucleosynthesis, the isotopic composition of the bulk interstellar medium changes approximately linearly with time, and thus any dust component having an age different from that of average dust will be isotopically anomalous. Special attention is given to C, O, Mg, Si, and isotopically heavy average-stellar condensates of SiC.

Thermal Cyclotron Reprocessing Of Gammy-Ray Bursts - Theory And Model Spectra, Dieter H. Hartmann, S. E. Woosley, Jonathan Arons

We examine the generation of infrared, optical, and ultraviolet flashes from single, magnetized neutron stars are experiencing of gamma-ray burst. Cyclotron reprocessing of energetic gamma-ray burst photons in the neutron star magnetosphere is assumed to be the underlying mechanism reponsible for the display at longer wavelengths, and thermal equilibrium is assumed in order to calculate electron distribution function. It is shown that thesea good approximations for a wide range of conditions expected in neutron star magnetospheres. The thermal cycoltron model proves capable fo generating ptical outbursts similar to bright historical events. althrough opitcal transients most likely would be much fainter. …

Local Economic Development Strategic Planning: A Proposal To Develop Community Self-Help Training Materials, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)
Publications
Rural and small town economies suffer from a lack of economic diversification, and from small size and isolation. At the same time, small communities often need help in organizing regionally based and locally driven comprehensive programs for economic development. In response to the apparent need for training assistance, the Center for Applied Urban Research (CAUR) and the Department of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) developed during the past two years a strategic planning approach for use by small towns. Altogether, the process has been successfully used in projects involving twelve communities in Nebraska.
This proposal …
Gamma-Ray Limits On Na-22 Production In Novae, Mark D. Leising, Gerald H. Share, Edward L. Chupp, Gottfried Kanbach
Gamma-Ray Limits On Na-22 Production In Novae, Mark D. Leising, Gerald H. Share, Edward L. Chupp, Gottfried Kanbach
Publications
Data accumulated from 1980 to1987 by the gamma-ray spectrometer on SMM have been searched for evidence of cosmic line emission at 1.275 MeV. This emission would result from the decay of 22Na, which might be produced by classical nova outbursts. No evidence of any 1.275 MeV emission of celestial origin has been found. A limit of 3×10-6M_sun; is placed on the accumulated 22Na from many novae occurring near the Galactic center, and a limit of 7×10-7M_sun; is placed on the mass of 22Na ejected by the closest of the recent neon-rich novae. These limits, while lower than any previous ones, …
Effects Of Eddy Viscosity And Thermal Conduction And Coriolis Force In The Dynamics Of Gravity Wave Driven Fluctuations In The Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Effects Of Eddy Viscosity And Thermal Conduction And Coriolis Force In The Dynamics Of Gravity Wave Driven Fluctuations In The Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Publications
Recently, Walterscheid et al. (1987) have described a dynamical-chemical model of wave-driven fluctuations in the OH nightglow which incorporated a five-reaction photochemical scheme and the dynamics of linearized acoustic-gravity waves in an isothermal, motionless atmosphere. The intensity oscillation (δI) about the time-averaged intensity (I0) and the temperature oscillation (δT) about the time-averaged temperature (T0) were related by means of the complex ratio η ≡ (δI/I0)/(δT/T0). One of the main conclusions of their work was that the inclusion of dynamical effects is absolutely essential for …
Wavelength Dependence Of Eddy Dissipation And Coriolis Force In The Dynamics Of Gravity Wave Driven Fluctuations In The Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Wavelength Dependence Of Eddy Dissipation And Coriolis Force In The Dynamics Of Gravity Wave Driven Fluctuations In The Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Publications
The theory of Walterscheid et al. (1987) to explain internal gravity wave induced oscillations in the emission intensity I and rotational temperature T of the OH nightglow was modified by Hickey (1988) to include the effects of eddy dissipation and Coriolis force. In the theory of Walterscheid et al. (1987) the ratio η = (δI/I0)/(δT/T0) (δ refers to a perturbation quantity, and a zero subscript refers to an average) was found to be independent of horizontal wavelength at long periods, while in the extended theory of Hickey (1988) some such dependence was …

Subjective Well-Being Among The Rural Elderly, Jay Meddin, Alan Vaux
Publications
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychosocial factors and subjective well-being among rural elderly persons. A broad range of psychosocial factors (such as mastery, social support, and perceived health) and measures of well-being (such as positive and negative affect and life satisfaction) were employed in bivariate correlation, canonical correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The findings show significant relationships between subjective well-being measures and psychosocial factors that are concomitant with other populations, both elderly and general.
