Breaking Of Thunderstorm-Generated Gravity Waves As A Source Of Short-Period Ducted Waves At Mesopause Altitudes, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko
Publications
Numerical simulation results indicate that the breaking of atmospheric gravity waves generated by tropospheric convection can excite short-period secondary waves, which are trapped in the lower thermospheric duct and which closely resemble quasi-monochromatic structures commonly observed in airglow imaging experiments.

We present a comparison of CO fundamental rovibrational lines (observed in the M band near 4.7 μm) from the inner circumstellar disks around the Herbig AeBe stars AB Aur and HD 141569. The CO spatial profiles and temperatures constrain the location of the gas for both stars to a distance of less than 50 AU. The CO emission from the disk of the ~4 Myr star AB Aur shows at least two temperature components, the inner disk at a rotational temperature of 1540 ± 80 K and the outer disk at 70 ± 10 K. The hot gas is located …
Fire Behavior Of Some Southern California Live Chaparral Fuels, Lulu Sun, Xiangyang Zhou, Shankar Mahalingam, David R. Weise
Fire Behavior Of Some Southern California Live Chaparral Fuels, Lulu Sun, Xiangyang Zhou, Shankar Mahalingam, David R. Weise
Publications
Wildfire spread in living vegetation, such as chaparral in southern California, often causes significant damage to infrastructure and ecosystems. In order to study wildfire spread in living vegetation, four of the most common chaparral in southern California, chamise, manzanita, scrub oak and ceanothus, were burned and compared. The observed fire behavior included mass loss rate, flame height, temperature structure and velocity field above the burning fuel bed. It was observed that flame height increases mainly with heat release rate. By using successive images of the temperature field, a recently developed thermal particle image velocity (TPIV) algorithm was applied to estimate …
A Human Error Analysis Of General Aviation Controlled Flight Into The Terrain Accidents Occurring Between 1990-1998, Scott A. Shappell, Douglas A. Wiegmann
A Human Error Analysis Of General Aviation Controlled Flight Into The Terrain Accidents Occurring Between 1990-1998, Scott A. Shappell, Douglas A. Wiegmann
Publications
Although all aviation accidents are of interest to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), perhaps none is more disconcerting than those in which a fully functioning aircraft is inexplicably flown into the ground. Referred to as controlled flight into terrain (CFIT), these accidents continue to be a major safety concern within aviation, in particular general aviation (GA). A previous study as part of the FAA's Safer Skies agenda examined 165 CFIT accidents using root cause analysis and developed 55 interventions to address their causes. While the study represented the work and opinions of several experts in the FAA and industry, the …

Use Of Bridges As Day Roosts By Bats In Southern Illinois, George A. Feldhamer, Timothy C. Carter, Anita T. Morzillo, Erica H. Nicholson
Publications
From May through July 2001, and June through August 2002 we surveyed 232 bridges in 9 southern Illinois counties for the presence of roosting bats. Fifteen bridges (6.5%) had bats roosting at the time they were surveyed. We encountered big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) most frequently. Eastern pipestrelles (Pipestrellus subflavus), little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus), and northern long-eared bats (M. septentrionalis) also were found roosting under bridges. The number of bats per bridge ranged from 1 to >100. Bats occurred in four of the five types of bridge designs surveyed. Of the …
Stormwater Management In Cold Climates – A Historical Perspective, Daniel Holzman
Stormwater Management In Cold Climates – A Historical Perspective, Daniel Holzman
Publications
Stormwater management has evolved tremendously in sophistication and complexity over the last 25 years. Stormwater is now often managed as a resource rather than an enemy, requiring groundwater recharge as one component of an interconnected system of collection, treatment, infiltration, and detention systems. Management of stormwater in cold climates requires consideration of widely variable soil permeability and groundwater levels over the course of a year. This paper traces some of the evolutionary changes in stormwater management philosophy, and examines a case history illustrating problems that can arise from inadequate stormwater control within a subdivision.
Efficient Targeting Of Protein Antigen To The Dendritic Cell Receptor Dec-205 In The Steady State Leads To Antigen Presentation On Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Products And Peripheral Cd8+ T Cell Tolerance, Laura C. Bonifaz, David P. Bonnyay, Karsten Mahnke
Publications
To identify endocytic receptors that allow dendritic cells (DCs) to capture and present antigens on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I products in vivo, we evaluated DEC-205, which is abundant on DCs in lymphoid tissues. Ovalbumin (OVA) protein, when chemically coupled to monoclonal αDEC-205 antibody, was presented by CD11c+ lymph node DCs, but not by CD11c- cells, to OVA-specific, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Receptor-mediated presentation was at least 400 times more efficient than unconjugated OVA and, for MHC class I, the DCs had to express transporter of antigenic peptides (TAP) transporters. When αDEC-205:OVA was injected …
Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells, Ralph M. Steinman, Daniel Hawiger, Michel C. Nussenzweig
Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells, Ralph M. Steinman, Daniel Hawiger, Michel C. Nussenzweig
Publications
Dendritic cells (DCs) have several functions in innate and adaptive immunity. In addition, there is increasing evidence that DCs in situ induce antigen-specific unresponsiveness or tolerance in central lymphoid organs and in the periphery. In the thymus DCs generate tolerance by deleting self-reactive T cells. In peripheral lymphoid organs DCs also induce tolerance to antigens captured by receptors that mediate efficient uptake of proteins and dying cells. Uptake by these receptors leads to the constitutive presentation of antigens on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II products. In the steady state the targeting of DC antigen capture receptors with …
Dendritic Cells Charged With Apoptotic Tumor Cells Induce Long-Lived Protective Cd4+ And Cd8+ T Cell Immunity Against B16 Melanoma, Romina S. Goldszmid, Juliana Idoyaga, Alicia Inès Bravo
Dendritic Cells Charged With Apoptotic Tumor Cells Induce Long-Lived Protective Cd4+ And Cd8+ T Cell Immunity Against B16 Melanoma, Romina S. Goldszmid, Juliana Idoyaga, Alicia Inès Bravo
Publications
Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent APCs and attractive vectors for cancer immunotherapy. Using the B16 melanoma, a poorly immunogenic experimental tumor that expresses low levels of MHC class I products, we investigated whether DCs loaded ex vivo with apoptotic tumor cells could elicit combined CD4+ and CD8+ T cell dependent, long term immunity following injection into mice. The bone marrow-derived DCs underwent maturation during overnight coculture with apoptotic melanoma cells. Following injection, DCs migrated to the draining lymph nodes comparably to control DCs at a level corresponding to ∼0.5% of the injected inoculum. Mice vaccinated with tumor-loaded DCs …
Documenting The Experience Of Participating In A Regionalization Effort To Control Stormwater Pollution In Southern Maine: A Qualitative Study Of The Casco Bay Interlocal Stormwater Working Group, Brenda M. Zollitsch
Publications
The Casco Bay Interlocal Stormwater Working Group is being held up as that model for regionalization efforts by officials outside the group. This study addresses two hypotheses: 1) Members of the ISWG believe that their participation on the ISWG has been beneficial to them and 2) Better understanding of the overall experience of being a member of the ISWG can provide insight into what makes regionalization efforts in Maine successful. The study used indepth interviews, observation and historical information data collection techniques. Study findings indicate that the experience of being a municipal member on the ISWG board has been seen …

Urban Snowmelt Processes – Current Research And Modelling Needs, Annette Semadeni-Davies
Urban Snowmelt Processes – Current Research And Modelling Needs, Annette Semadeni-Davies
Publications
Despite the water balances of cold region towns being dominated by low intensity, long duration snowmelt events, urban drainage systems continue to be designed according to standards developed for short, high intensity rain storms. During the 1980s and early 1990s, work in Scandinavia (Bengtsson, 1983, 1984, 1986; Westerström, 1984; Bengtsson and Westerström, 1992; Thorolfsson, 1990) and Canada (Xu and Buttle, 1987; Buttle and Xu, 1988, Todhunter et al., 1992) identified fundamental differences between rural and urban snowmelt processes. They found that snow properties such as density and albedo varied both between town and country and within the town depending on …

“Required Reading For Library Administrators Part 2”, Eric C. Shoaf, Tobeylynn Birch, Mark T. Day, William B. Edgar
Publications
The library and information science literature is overflowing with how-to articles, particularly how to manage the library. Increasingly, library managers find that the time they have available to peruse such literature lessens as other professional demands intrude. With this trend in mind, members of the Comparative Library Organization Committee (CLOC), a LAMA/LOMS standing committee, decided that a list of required readings is in order. Not just another bibliography, the selection of titles was developed using citation analysis, or bibliometrics, to select highly cited authors and titles for works published outside of the professional library literature, and for works published within …

Fuel Consumption Modeling Of A Transport Category Aircraft: A Flight Operations Quality Assurance (Foqa) Analysis, Alan J. Stolzer
Fuel Consumption Modeling Of A Transport Category Aircraft: A Flight Operations Quality Assurance (Foqa) Analysis, Alan J. Stolzer
Publications
"Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA)-derived data was used to develop parsimonious model(s) for fuel consumption on a Boeing 757 airplane using regression analysis. Using the model(s), it should be possible to identify outliers (specific flights) with respect to fuel consumption, which will enable the air carrier to investigate the cause of excessive fuel consumption and remedy the problem A major air carrier provided the database used for the study. Fuel flow was predicted by calibrated airspeed, gross weight, and n2 (ENG[1 or 2]n2). The models containing these three variables explained approximately 85% of the variation in fuel flow. A reporting …
Mitigating The Negative Effects Of Stress In Space Flight: A Transactional Approach, Haydee Maria Cuevas
Mitigating The Negative Effects Of Stress In Space Flight: A Transactional Approach, Haydee Maria Cuevas
Publications
The primary goal of this theoretical paper is to highlight how a transactional approach to investigating stressor effects during space flight can lead to a greater understanding of the complex processes by which humans adapt psychologically and physically to the adverse conditions encountered in this extreme environment.Transactional approaches conceptualize stress as occurring in the nature of the "transaction" (Le., interaction) between the individual and the stimulus environment, emphasizing the role of cognitive appraisal (Le., perceived ability to cope with the situation). Interventions that positively influence this cognitive appraisal process may, therefore, lessen the experience of stress and optimize human performance …
