Assessment Of Floating Vertical Raceways For The Culture Of Phase-Ii Hybrid Striped Bass, Eric T. Volkman, Christopher C. Kohler, Susan T. Kohler

Publications

A floating vertical raceway is a system designed to provide a constant, unidirectional flow of water to fish confined in a flexible raceway that is suspended vertically in the water column. This study evaluated the potential of floating vertical raceways for the culture of phase-II sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops × male striped bass M. saxatilis) reared at two densities (125 and 188 fish/m3). Fish with a mean starting weight of 0.7 g were fed a diet containing 40% crude protein to satiation for 121 d. Fish in the low-density treatment reached a significantly higher …

Surveys and interviews reveal that general aviation manufacturers rely on user[s] to identify problems in maintenance documentation with corrections typically initiated in response to users-reported problems found in the manual;. This investigation compares techniques that manufacturers can use to improve the quality of the maintenance documentation developed by technical writing groups. The techniques, User Performance and Cognitive Walkthrough, were used to identify problems in aircraft maintenance documentation.

Laser Induced Desorption Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometer Analysis Of Adsorbed Contaminants On Vacuum Ultraviolet Lithography Optic Materials, Susan D. Allen, Yamini Surpaneni Feb 2004

Laser Induced Desorption Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometer Analysis Of Adsorbed Contaminants On Vacuum Ultraviolet Lithography Optic Materials, Susan D. Allen, Yamini Surpaneni

Publications

Adsorbed surface contaminants on optical elements absorb light energy in an optical lithography system and, if left unclean, will result in reduced wafer yield. In order to nondestructively analyze the surface adsorbate of different CaF2 samples, a laser induced desorption-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer (LID-TOFMS) technique was developed. The main object of this technique is to investigate the surface composition of adsorbed contaminants as a function of position on the sample. An Er:YAG laser at 2.94 μm was used as the light source to induce desorption. Electron impact ionization was used to obtain ionization of desorbed molecules. The detection of …

In Vivo Targeting Of Antigens To Maturing Dendritic Cells Via The Dec-205 Receptor Improves T Cell Vaccination, Laura C. Bonifaz, David P. Bonnyay, Anna Charalambous Jan 2004

In Vivo Targeting Of Antigens To Maturing Dendritic Cells Via The Dec-205 Receptor Improves T Cell Vaccination, Laura C. Bonifaz, David P. Bonnyay, Anna Charalambous

Publications

The prevention and treatment of prevalent infectious diseases and tumors should benefit from improvements in the induction of antigen-specific T cell immunity. To assess the potential of antigen targeting to dendritic cells to improve immunity, we incorporated ovalbumin protein into a monoclonal antibody to the DEC-205 receptor, an endocytic receptor that is abundant on these cells in lymphoid tissues. Simultaneously, we injected agonistic α-CD40 antibody to mature the dendritic cells. We found that a single low dose of antibody-conjugated ovalbumin initiated immunity from the naive CD4+ and CD8+ T cell repertoire. Unexpectedly, the αDEC-205 antigen conjugates, given s.c., …

Hiv-1-Infected Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells Do Not Undergo Maturation But Can Elicit Il-10 Production And T Cell Regulation, Angela Granelli-Piperno, Angelika Golebiowska, Christine Trumpfheller Jan 2004

Hiv-1-Infected Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells Do Not Undergo Maturation But Can Elicit Il-10 Production And T Cell Regulation, Angela Granelli-Piperno, Angelika Golebiowska, Christine Trumpfheller

Publications

Dendritic cells (DCs) undergo maturation during virus infection and thereby become potent stimulators of cell-mediated immunity. HIV-1 replicates in immature DCs, but we now find that infection is not accompanied by many components of maturation in either infected cells or uninfected bystanders. The infected cultures do not develop potent stimulating activity for the mixed leukocyte reaction (MLR), and the DCs producing HIV-1 gag p24 do not express CD83 and DC-lysosome-associated membrane protein maturation markers. If different maturation stimuli are applied to DCs infected with HIV-1, the infected cells selectively fail to mature. When DCs from HIV-1-infected patients are infected and …

Functional Comparison Of The Mouse Dc-Sign, Signr1, Signr3 And Langerin, C-Type Lectins, Kazuhiko Takahara, Yusuke Yashima, Yoshiki Omatsu

Publications

The mouse (m) DC-SIGN family consists of several homologous type II transmembrane proteins located in close proximity on chromosome 8 and having a single carboxyl terminal carbohydrate recognition domain. We first used transfected non-macrophage cell lines to compare the polysaccharide and microbial uptake capacities of three of these lectins - DC-SIGN, SIGNR1 and SIGNR3 - to another homologue mLangerin. Each molecule shares a potential mannose-recognition EPN-motif in its carbohydrate recognition domain. Using an anti-Tag antibody to follow Tag-labeled transfectants, we found that each molecule could be internalized, although the rates differed. However, mDC-SIGN was unable to take up FITC-dextran, FITC-ovalbumin, …

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis Jan 2004

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis

Publications

In the long march from manual training, the subject which today we call technology education has always had to contend with the question of its legitimacy as valid school knowledge. In this regard, it shares a similar history of struggle with other subjects whose initial entry into the curriculum was based on a utilitarian rather than an academic rationale. Goodson (1983) documents such cases (e.g. geography and biology) showing how in their struggle for acceptance, the primary strategy of advocates was to try to enhance the academic bona fides of their subject. He explained that utilitarian knowledge is associated with …

Restoration Of Southern Ecosystems, William Conner, John A. Stanturf, Emile S. Gardiner, Kenneth Outcalt, James M. Guldin

Publications

Restoration of the myriad communities of bottomland hardwood and wetland forests and of the diverse communities of fire-dominated pine forests is the subject of intense interest in the Southern United States. Restoration practice is relatively advanced for bottomland hardwoods and longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.), and less so for swamps and shortleaf pine (P. echinata Mill.). Most bottomland hardwood restoration is taking place on private land, while restoration of swamps and shortleaf pine occurs mostly on public land. Both public and private landowners are involved in the restoration of longleaf pine. Proper matching of species to site is critical to …

Siviculture And Management Strategies Applicable To Southern Hardwoods, William Conner, Ray R. Hicks Jr, Robert C. Kellison, David Vanlear

Publications

Southern hardwood forests stretch from the Virginias to Florida and from the mid-Atlantic to Missouri. They can generally be grouped into upland forests and bottomland forests. The upland hardwood forests of the southern region are usually associated with the mountainous topography of the Appalachians and Ozarks. Bottomland hardwoods are found along the floodplains of larger rivers in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains, including the Mississippi River floodplain. Southern hardwood forests are owned by a variety of governmental and private owners, but the vast majority of owners are nonindustrial private individuals. These owners seldom engage in intensive forest management, often …

Technology And Mathematics Standards: An Integrated Approach, Chris Merrill, Mark Comerford Jan 2004

Technology And Mathematics Standards: An Integrated Approach, Chris Merrill, Mark Comerford

Publications

The article focuses on the use of standards-based teaching and learning that has been gaining significant attention in the education world. State and national associations now base their specific subject area or discipline solely on standards, i.e., International Technology Education Association (ITEA), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), National Science Education Association (NSEA). Moreover, at the public school level, state boards of education are holding school districts accountable for teaching standards-based curricula. It is with the latter definition in mind that the authors created a standards-based, integrated technology and mathematics lesson using the design and construction of stair systems.

Standards-Based Curriculum Development For Pre-Service And In-Service: A “Partnering” Approach Using Modified Backwards Design, Steve Shumway, Jared Berrett

Publications

The article reports that technology teacher educators across the nation are considering what changes will be made to their pre-service teacher education programs to implement the standards in Standards for Technological Literacy (STL) (ITEA, 2000/2002) and to help future teachers learn to develop and teach curriculum that is based on those standards (Custer& amp; Wright, 2002). A recent survey (Reeve, Nielson,& amp; Meade, 2003) revealed that in Utah, a majority of teachers have a copy of the standards and are supportive of them, but they want help implementing standards-based technology education in their classrooms. Initially, a self-evaluation of the teacher …

Effect Of Day Length On Sleep Habits And Subjective On-Duty Alertness In Irregular Work Schedules, June J. Pilcher, Heather M. Teichman, Stephen Popkin, Krista Hildebrand, Michael Coplen Jan 2004

Effect Of Day Length On Sleep Habits And Subjective On-Duty Alertness In Irregular Work Schedules, June J. Pilcher, Heather M. Teichman, Stephen Popkin, Krista Hildebrand, Michael Coplen

Publications

The human circadian system is sensitive to environmental conditions, such as those created by shift work, that affect the timing and duration of sleep. Previous research on the effects of shift work, however, has focused primarily on regularly scheduled shifts. Few studies have focused on irregular and unpredictable on-call shift systems, such as those found in much of railroad operations. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of irregular shift systems experienced by locomotive engineers on the length of sleep-wake periods and the effect of different length sleep-wake periods on self-reported sleep quantity, sleep quality, and …

Publications

We present photometry and spectroscopy of the afterglow of GRB 030323. VLT spectra of the afterglow show damped Lyα(DLA) absorption and low- and high-ionization lines at a redshift z =3.3718 ±0.0005. The inferred neutral hy-drogen column density, log N(H i) =21.90±0.07, is larger than any (GRB- or QSO-) DLA H  column density inferred directly from Lyαin absorption. From the afterglow photometry, we derive a conservative upper limit to the host-galaxy extinction: AV <0.5 mag. The iron abundance is [Fe/H] =−1.47 ±0.11, while the metallicity of the gas as measured from sulphur is [S/H] =−1.26 ±0.20. We derive an upper limit on the H2 molecular fraction of 2N(H2)/(2N(H2) +N(H i)) <∼10−6.In the Lyαtrough, a Lyαemission line is detected, which corresponds to a star-formation rate (not corrected for dust extinction) of roughly 1 Myr−1. All these results are consistent with the host galaxy of GRB 030323 consisting of a low metallicity gas with a low dust content. We detect fine-structure lines of silicon, Si*, which have never been clearly detected in QSO-DLAs; this suggests that these lines are produced in the vicinity of the GRB explosion site. Under the assumption that these fine-structure levels are populated by particle collisions, we estimate the H  volume density to be nH i =102−104 cm−3.HST/ACS imaging 4 months after the burst shows an extended AB(F606W) =28.0 ±0.3 mag object at a distance of 0.14 (1 kpc) from the early afterglow location, which presumably is the host galaxy of GRB 030323.

The Reactivity Of Dissolved Organic Matter For Disinfection By-Product Formation, Mehmet Kitis, Tanju Karanfil, James E. Kilduff Jan 2004

The Reactivity Of Dissolved Organic Matter For Disinfection By-Product Formation, Mehmet Kitis, Tanju Karanfil, James E. Kilduff

Publications

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in 6 water samples collected from 4 surface waters were fractionated using some or all of 5 physicochemical separation processes (activated carbon and XAD-8 batch adsorption, alum coagulation, ultrafiltration (UF), and XAD-8 column fractionation). Activated carbon, XAD-8 batch adsorption and alum coagulation processes fractionated DOM by preferentially removing high-SUVA components from solution. The XAD-8 column method fractionated DOM into hydrophobic and hydrophilic components while UF separated DOM into different size fractions. Over 40 DOM fractions, characterized using carbon-normalized (specific) ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), were obtained for each water. Trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA_9) formation after chlorination …

A Multi-Objective Decision-Making Framework For Transportation Investments, Mashrur Chowdhury, Pulin Tan

Publications

This paper presents a framework based on multi-objective optimization that can be used to generate and analyze the most desirable transportation investment options based on their objectives and constraints. The framework, which is based on the surrogate worth trade-off analysis, could be applied to both discrete or continuous decision-problem scenarios. In a discrete problem, a predefined set of alternatives is available, whereas continuous problems are not characterized by a predefined set of alternatives. This framework was applied with the data generated for a Capital Beltway Corridor investment study. The multi-objective decision-making framework was found to be adaptable to this typical …

Plant Tissue Extraction Method For Complexed And Free Cyanide, Joseph T. Bushey, Stephen D. Ebbs, David A. Dzombak

Publications

A method for free cyanide and strongly-complexed cyanide measurement within plant tissue was developed to study uptake and movement of cyanide species separately from cyanide metabolism and metabolite movement by a willow plant (Salix eriocephala var. Michaux). Spike recoveries from solutions with and without plant tissue, using various solvent combinations, and background control tissue contributions were investigated to obtain an accurate and precise extraction method for measurement of complexed and free cyanide concentrations within plant tissue. The optimum extraction technique involved the freezing of plant tissue with liquid nitrogen to facilitate homogenization prior to extraction. Homogenized willow tissue samples, 1 …

A Historical Overview Of Internet Reference Services For Distance Learners, Anne Marie Casey

Publications

The advent of library services and collections on the Internet revolutionized reference services to students enrolled in distance learning programs. Prior to the Internet, reference librarians who supported distance learning programs had few methods, and many of them costly, to provide the equivalent library services advocated by the ACRL Guidelines. Through the Internet, these librarians were able to approximate the services and resources that had always been available to students who came into the library. This article describes the development of reference services on the Internet in a variety of libraries that support distance learners.
