Constraints On Violations Of Lorentz Symmetry From Gravity Probe B, James M. Overduin, Ryan D. Everett, Quentin G. Bailey

Publications

We use the final results from Gravity Probe B to set new upper limits on the gravitational sector of the Standard-Model Extension, including for the first time the coefficient associated with the time-time component of the new field responsible for inducing local Lorentz violation in the theory.

Using Multimedia Online Learning Tools To Supplement The Classroom Instruction, Cassandra Gribbins, Lulu Sun Mar 2014

Using Multimedia Online Learning Tools To Supplement The Classroom Instruction, Cassandra Gribbins, Lulu Sun

Publications

This paper introduces the use of multimedia tools to create an online self-study environment to supplement the classroom instruction in Graphical Communications. The topics in this course extend from hand sketching demonstrations to the solid model creation using CAD software such as CATIA. Webcam and Camtasia software were used to capture live examples and the recorded videos were placed on Blackboard. Multimedia tools provide students an efficient way to review the topics covered in the class, in that hand sketching and complex CAD models are often difficult to interpret through words and pictures alone. The positive survey results reflect an …

Development Of High-Purity Optical Grade Single-Crystal Cvd Diamond For Intracavity Cooling, Andrew M. Bennett, Benjamin J. Wickham, Harpreet K. Dhillon, Ying Chen, Scott Webster, Giorgio Turri, Michael Bass Feb 2014

Development Of High-Purity Optical Grade Single-Crystal Cvd Diamond For Intracavity Cooling, Andrew M. Bennett, Benjamin J. Wickham, Harpreet K. Dhillon, Ying Chen, Scott Webster, Giorgio Turri, Michael Bass

Publications

Microwave assisted chemical vapour deposited bulk diamond products have been used in a range of high power laser systems, due to low absorption across a range of wavelengths and exceptional thermal properties. However the application of polycrystalline products has frequently been limited to applications at longer wavelengths or thermal uses outside of the optical path due to the birefringence and scatter that are intrinsic properties of the polycrystalline materials. However, there are some solid state structures, including thin disc gain modules and amplifiers, that will gain significantly in terms of potential output powers if diamond could be used as a …

Optimized Production Of Vanillin From Green Vanilla Pods By Enzyme-Assisted Extraction Combined With Pre-Freezing And Thawing, Yanjun Zhang, Limei Mo, Feng Chen, Minquan Lu, Wenjiang Dong, Qinghuang Wang, Fei Xu, Fenglin Gu

Publications

Production of vanillin from natural green vanilla pods was carried out by enzyme-assisted extraction combined with pre-freezing and thawing. In the first step the green vanilla pods were pre-frozen and then thawed to destroy cellular compartmentation. In the second step pectinase from Aspergillus niger was used to hydrolyze the pectin between the glucovanillin substrate and β-glucosidase. Four main variables, including enzyme amount, reaction temperature, time and pH, which were of significance for the vanillin content were studied and a central composite design (CCD) based on the results of a single-factor tests was used. Response surface methodology based on CCD was …

Energy Harvesting From Atmospheric Variations - Theory And Test, John Wagner, Gibran Ali, David Moline, Todd Schweisinger

Publications

The last two decades have offered a dramatic rise in the use of digital technologies such as wireless sensor networks that require small isolated power supplies. Energy harvesting, a method to gather energy from ambient sources including sunlight, vibrations, heat, etc., has provided some success in powering these systems. One of the unexplored areas of energy harvesting is the use of atmospheric temperature variations to obtain usable energy. This paper investigates an innovative device to extract energy from atmospheric variations using ethyl chloride filled mechanical bellows. The apparatus consists of a bellows filled with ethyl chloride working against a spring …

Interaction Of Magnetic Reconnection And Kelvin-Helmholtz Modes For Large Magnetic Shear: 1. Kelvin-Helmholtz Trigger, Xuanye Ma, Antonius Otto, Peter A. Delamere Feb 2014

Interaction Of Magnetic Reconnection And Kelvin-Helmholtz Modes For Large Magnetic Shear: 1. Kelvin-Helmholtz Trigger, Xuanye Ma, Antonius Otto, Peter A. Delamere

Publications

At the Earth's magnetopause, both magnetic reconnection and the Kelvin‐Helmholtz (KH) instability can operate simultaneously for southward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. The dynamic evolution of such a system can be expected to depend on the importance of KH wave evolution versus reconnection and therefore on the respective initial perturbations. In this study, a series of local three‐dimensional MHD and Hall MHD simulations are carried out to investigate the situation where the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability is initially the primary process. It is demonstrated that magnetic reconnection is driven and strongly modified by nonlinear KH waves. The highest reconnection rate is close to …

Kinesthetic Investigations In The Physics Classroom, Brooke A. Whitworth, Jennifer L. Chiu, Randy L. Bell Feb 2014

Kinesthetic Investigations In The Physics Classroom, Brooke A. Whitworth, Jennifer L. Chiu, Randy L. Bell

Publications

Inquiry can be defined practically as “an active learning process in which students answer research questions through data analysis.”2 This simple definition of inquiry is based on the National Science Educational Standards and is easy for teachers to understand. The National Research Council (NRC) identifies the scientific practices that support inquiry and that students should be engaged in, including: question generation, experimental design, data analysis, creating explanations, argumentation, and communicating results.3 The investigations created encourage inquiry and require students to develop their scientific practices skills.

Interaction Of Magnetic Reconnection And Kelvin-Helmholtz Modes For Large Magnetic Shear: 2. Reconnection Trigger, Xuanye Ma, Antonius Otto, Peter A. Delamere Feb 2014

Interaction Of Magnetic Reconnection And Kelvin-Helmholtz Modes For Large Magnetic Shear: 2. Reconnection Trigger, Xuanye Ma, Antonius Otto, Peter A. Delamere

Publications

A typical property of magnetopause reconnection is a significant perpendicular shear flow due to the fast streaming magnetosheath plasma. Therefore, the magnetopause represents a large magnetic and flow shear boundary during periods of southward interplanetary magnetic field, which can be unstable to Kelvin‐Helmholtz (KH) modes and to magnetic reconnection. A series of local three‐dimensional MHD and Hall MHD simulations is carried out to investigate the interaction of reconnection and nonlinear KH waves considering magnetic reconnection as the primary process. It is demonstrated that the onset reconnection causes a thinning of the shear flow layer, thereby generating small wavelength KH modes. …

A Fast Algorithm For The Inversion Of Quasiseparable Vandermonde-Like Matrices, Sirani M. Perera, Grigory Bonik, Vadim Olshevsky Jan 2014

A Fast Algorithm For The Inversion Of Quasiseparable Vandermonde-Like Matrices, Sirani M. Perera, Grigory Bonik, Vadim Olshevsky

Publications

The results on Vandermonde-like matrices were introduced as a generalization of polynomial Vandermonde matrices, and the displacement structure of these matrices was used to derive an inversion formula. In this paper we first present a fast Gaussian elimination algorithm for the polynomial Vandermonde-like matrices. Later we use the said algorithm to derive fast inversion algorithms for quasiseparable, semiseparable and well-free Vandermonde-like matrices having O(n2) complexity. To do so we identify structures of displacement operators in terms of generators and the recurrence relations(2-term and 3-term) between the columns of the basis transformation matrices for quasiseparable, semiseparable and well-free polynomials. Finally we …

Simulating Burr Type Vii Distributions Through The Method Of L-Moments And L-Correlations, Mohan Dev Pant, Todd C. Headrick Jan 2014

Simulating Burr Type Vii Distributions Through The Method Of L-Moments And L-Correlations, Mohan Dev Pant, Todd C. Headrick

Publications

Burr Type VII, a one-parameter non-normal distribution, is among the less studied distributions, especially, in the contexts of statistical modeling and simulation studies. The main purpose of this study is to introduce a methodology for simulating univariate and multivariate Burr Type VII distributions through the method of L-moments and L-correlations. The methodology can be applied in statistical modeling of events in a variety of applied mathematical contexts and Monte Carlo simulation studies. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that L-moment-based Burr Type VII distributions are superior to their conventional moment-based analogs in terms of distribution fitting and estimation. Simulation results …

Estimating Abundance Of Adult Trachemys Scripta With Camera Traps: Accuracy, Precision And Probabilities Of Capture For A Closed Population, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber Jan 2014

Estimating Abundance Of Adult Trachemys Scripta With Camera Traps: Accuracy, Precision And Probabilities Of Capture For A Closed Population, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber

Publications

Low and variable rates of capture are common problems when estimating abundance of freshwater turtles with capture-mark-recapture (CMR). We speculated camera traps would allow us to obtain reliable estimates of abundance by re-sighting marked Trachemys scripta elegans (Sliders) as they basked on man-made rafts during a 20-day surveillance period. We evaluated the method by releasing Sliders in a fenced enclosure to compare estimates from CMR to true abundance. We also evaluated probabilities of detection and retention of marks. Permanence of marks applied with marine epoxy satisfied assumptions for CMR. Camera traps detected 23 of 25 Sliders. Our ability to discern …

An Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper For High-Latitude Airglow Studies, Pierre-Dominique Pautet, Michael J. Taylor, William R. Pendleton Jr., Yucheng Zhao, Tao Yuan, R. Esplin, D. Mclain

Publications

Over the past 60 years, ground-based remote sensing measurements of the Earth’s mesospheric temperature have been performed using the nighttime hydroxyl (OH) emission, which originates at an altitude of ∼87  km∼87  km. Several types of instruments have been employed to date: spectrometers, Fabry–Perot or Michelson interferometers, scanning-radiometers, and more recently temperature mappers. Most of them measure the mesospheric temperature in a few sample directions and/or with a limited temporal resolution, restricting their research capabilities to the investigation of larger-scale perturbations such as inertial waves, tides, or planetary waves. The Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (AMTM) is a novel infrared digital imaging …

Creating Space: Pedagogical Choices To Encourage A Third Space In An Urban, Kindergarten Science Classroom, Cassie F. Quigley, Anna H. Hall

Publications

“The butterfly is in the chrysalis stage,” Victory informed us as she pointed to the brown chrysalis in the jar on the lab bench, “It was an egg then it formed its chrysalis or pupa and then it will become a butterfly.” When we asked her how she would describe this to her friends, she remarked, “It is like when you go into the dressing room and put on a church dress- you act like someone different.” In this example, Victory, a kindergartener, was translating the scientific language taught to her in the science classroom into a language her friends …

Tigers In The Trenches: The Clemson College Class Of 1917 In The First World War, Alan C. Grubb, Brock M. Lusk

Publications

Clemson University proudly proclaims that the Class of 1917 volunteered en-masse for service during the First World War, after President Woodrow Wilson sought a declaration of war from Congress in April 1917. A bullet stating the claim is the first on the Clemson Corps’ “Stories & Highlights inside the Scroll of Honor” web page,1 and the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) on campus trumpets this to incoming cadets. I personally remember hearing this as a young Cadet 4th Class from my ROTC instructor in 1998 and imaging the men who graduated sailing to Europe to serve beside one another in …

We present our conceptual model. The final section explains the current state of research and implications for future research are discussed.

Pre-Service Teachers’ Use Of Visualizations In The Science Classroom: A Case Study, Brooke A. Whitworth, Jennifer L. Chiu Jan 2014

Pre-Service Teachers’ Use Of Visualizations In The Science Classroom: A Case Study, Brooke A. Whitworth, Jennifer L. Chiu

Publications

Scientific visualizations of phenomena can enhance the way learners understand scientific concepts (Honey & Hilton, 2011). Scientific concepts can be abstract and difficult for students to understand and visualizations can help make these abstract concepts more concrete for students. For example, chemistry students often struggle with understanding how atoms bond since they cannot directly see atoms. Using a visualization to show students how the electrons are shared or transferred can help students understand these abstract concepts. In addition, many visualizations are freely available online and can be a key element to maintain quality science instruction with limited resources.

Strategy Precedes Operational Effectiveness: Aligning High Graduation Rankings With Competitive Graduation Grade Point Averages, Maurice Apprey, Kimberly C. Bassett, Patrice Preston-Grimes, Dion W. Lewis, Beverly Wood Jan 2014

Strategy Precedes Operational Effectiveness: Aligning High Graduation Rankings With Competitive Graduation Grade Point Averages, Maurice Apprey, Kimberly C. Bassett, Patrice Preston-Grimes, Dion W. Lewis, Beverly Wood

Publications

Two pivotal and interconnected claims are addressed in this article. First, strategy precedes program effectiveness. Second, graduation rates and rankings are insufficient in any account of academic progress for African American students. In this article, graduation is regarded as the floor and not the ceiling, as it were. The ideal situation in the promotion of strategy is the alignment of high graduation rates or rankings with high graduation cumulative grade point averages. This strategic alignment is precisely what needs to be formulated in the first instance before making judgments about program development and/or operational effectiveness. The work of the Office …

Simulating Univariate And Multivariate Tukey G-And-H Distributions Based On The Method Of Percentiles, Tzu Chun Kuo, Todd C. Headrick Jan 2014

Simulating Univariate And Multivariate Tukey G-And-H Distributions Based On The Method Of Percentiles, Tzu Chun Kuo, Todd C. Headrick

Publications

This paper derives closed-form solutions for the 𝑔-and-ℎ shape parameters associated with the Tukey family of distributions based on the method of percentiles (MOP). A proposed MOP univariate procedure is described and compared with the method of moments (MOM) in the context of distribution fitting and estimating skew and kurtosis functions. The MOP methodology is also extended from univariate to multivariate data generation. A procedure is described for simulating nonnormal distributions with specified Spearman correlations. TheMOP procedure has an advantage over theMOMbecause it does not require numerical integration to compute intermediate correlations. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposedMOP procedure is …

Evaluation And Analysis Of Distributed Graph-Parallel Processing Frameworks, Yue Zhao, Kenji Yoshigoe, Mengjun Xie, Suijian Zhou, Remzi Seker, Jiang Bian Jan 2014

Evaluation And Analysis Of Distributed Graph-Parallel Processing Frameworks, Yue Zhao, Kenji Yoshigoe, Mengjun Xie, Suijian Zhou, Remzi Seker, Jiang Bian

Publications

A number of graph-parallel processing frameworks have been proposed to address the needs of processing complex and large-scale graph structured datasets in recent years. Although significant performance improvement made by those frameworks were reported, comparative advantages of each of these frameworks over the others have not been fully studied, which impedes the best utilization of those frameworks for a specific graph computing task and setting. In this work, we conducted a comparison study on parallel processing systems for large-scale graph computations in a systematic manner, aiming to reveal the characteristics of those systems in performing common graph algorithms with real-world …

Missing The Forest For The Trees: Gender Pay Discrimination In Academia, Melissa Hart Jan 2014

Missing The Forest For The Trees: Gender Pay Discrimination In Academia, Melissa Hart

Publications

Women in virtually every job category still make less than men. Academia is no exception. This Article will explore some of the structural explanations for this continued disparity and the continued resistance to seriously confronting those structural barriers to equality. Using the still-unfolding story of a charge of discrimination filed against a university, this Article examines the script that has become all-too-familiar in discussions about the gender pay gap, whether in academia or elsewhere. The basic storyline in pay discrimination litigation is this: Evidence is presented about the existence of a gap between men's earnings and women's earnings. The response …

Machine Learning And Law, Harry Surden Jan 2014

Machine Learning And Law, Harry Surden

Publications

This Article explores the application of machine learning techniques within the practice of law. Broadly speaking “machine learning” refers to computer algorithms that have the ability to “learn” or improve in performance over time on some task. In general, machine learning algorithms are designed to detect patterns in data and then apply these patterns going forward to new data in order to automate particular tasks. Outside of law, machine learning techniques have been successfully applied to automate tasks that were once thought to necessitate human intelligence — for example language translation, fraud-detection, driving automobiles, facial recognition, and data-mining. If performing …

Titchmarsh-Weyl Theory For Canonical Systems, Keshav R. Acharya

Publications

The main purpose of this paper is to develop Titchmarsh- Weyl theory of canonical systems. To this end, we first observe the fact that Schrodinger and Jacobi equations can be written into canonical systems. We then discuss the theory of Weyl m-function for canonical systems and establish the relation between the Weyl m-functions of Schrodinger equations and that of canonical systems which involve Schrodinger equations.

The 6th Mode Of Transportation, Robert O. Walton Jan 2014

The 6th Mode Of Transportation, Robert O. Walton

Publications

The five modes of freight transportation are normally characterized as motor carriers, railroads, airlines, water carriers, and pipelines. This paper will attempt to position the Internet as the sixth mode of transportation. This paper compares the strengths and weaknesses of the traditional five modes of transportation against the proposed 6th mode of the Internet. Without including the Internet as a mode of transportation, and tracking the economic value that it adds to the economy, the economic impact of the Internet as a mode is not considered. The recommendation of this study is that the Internet should be added to the …

Torn Between Two Selves: Should Law Care More About Experiencing Selves Or Remembering Selves?, Peter H. Huang Jan 2014

Torn Between Two Selves: Should Law Care More About Experiencing Selves Or Remembering Selves?, Peter H. Huang

Publications

Based upon psychological research and neuroscience studies about subjective well-being, 2002 Nobel Laureate in Economics Daniel Kahneman poses a riddle about which of these two selves should count: experiencing selves or remembering selves. Our remembered emotions (memories) are usually rosier than our experienced emotions, and people are motivated by their predicted emotions, which tend to coincide with their emotional memories. This Article advocates that law should care more about experiencing selves than remembering selves if and when experiences result in chronic health or stress consequences that either (1) societies care about more than people do (because of externalities, public bads, …
