Factors Predicting Pattern Of Math Courses And Mathematical Aptitude Test Scores Among High School Women And Men, Mary A. Kanarian Jan 1983

Factors Predicting Pattern Of Math Courses And Mathematical Aptitude Test Scores Among High School Women And Men, Mary A. Kanarian

Open Access Dissertations

The present investigation was designed to extend the research on cognitive and social factors predicting both pattern of enrollment in mathematics courses across the high school years and twelfth grade mathematical aptitude test scores among women and men. A total of 226 seniors enrolled in a high school located in an upper-class neighborhood in New England volunteered to participate and completed a booklet containing: a student consent form, the Attitudes toward Mathematics Scales (Fennema & Sherman, 1976), the Agency and Communion Competency Scale (White, 1979), and a background questionnaire. A member of the school staff obtained eighth grade Space Relations …

Boron In The Marine Atmosphere, Thomas R. Fogg Jan 1983

Boron In The Marine Atmosphere, Thomas R. Fogg

Open Access Dissertations

Atmospheric boron has been separated into gaseous and particulate components for the first time by passing air through a simple impregnated filter sampling system. A Nuclepore filter for particulate boron collection preceded KOH impregnated Whatman 41 filters for gaseous boron collection. The filters were contained in a single 47 mm filter holder. Boron was determined by visible spectrophotometry with 2,4-dinitro-1,8-naphthalene dial (DNNDO) and brilliant green. This method was employed to allow short time scale variations of atmospheric boron to be measured. The goal of this work was to investigate the role of the oceans on atmospheric boron. Gaseous and particulate …

Geochemical Behavior And Distribution Of Copper And Iron In Marine Waters, James Leo Symes Iii Jan 1983

Geochemical Behavior And Distribution Of Copper And Iron In Marine Waters, James Leo Symes Iii

Open Access Dissertations

This thesis consists of three studies related to trace-metal marine geochemistry. The first investigation deals with the distribution of iron in the Northwest Atlantic. The second portion is a study comprising a series of physicochemical laboratory measurements aimed at characterization of the heterogeneous equilibrium of malachite (Cu2(OH)2CO3). This work is presented in two reports. The first deals with the experimental results in terms of equilibrium constants and related thermodynamic parameters while the second addresses the geochemical significance of these findings. The last portion of the thesis research is an investigation of copper(II) interaction with …

Groundwater Flow Simulation By A Stochastic Representation Of Soil, Paul Bruce Aldinger Jan 1983

Groundwater Flow Simulation By A Stochastic Representation Of Soil, Paul Bruce Aldinger

Open Access Dissertations

A Monte Carlo technique is utilized to incorporate the uncertainty in media characteristics to the solution of a groundwater flow problem. This technique involves the repetitive solution of a significant number of equiprobable representations of the soil medium. Probability and statistics are utilized to model the soil parameters and study the significance of the output.

An existing computer code was adapted and significantly modified to allow characterization of the media's hydraulic conductivity (permeability) as autocorrelated and statistically homogeneous. A first order nearest neighbor model was selected to affect the autocorrelation of this parameter within the finite difference mesh. The statistical …

Three-Dimensional Analysis Of Turning Within Airborne Bird Flocks, Harold Pomeroy Jan 1983

Three-Dimensional Analysis Of Turning Within Airborne Bird Flocks, Harold Pomeroy

Open Access Dissertations

The three-dimensional structure of airborne pigeon flocks was monitored over time. Flocks changed both in overall shape, and in compactness during the execution of turns. Flight speeds of the flocks were sensitive to the vertical rather than the horizontal component of a turn. The compactness of flocks did not seem to change in relation to speed maintained during turns or sharpness of turns.

The cues to which birds responded in adjusting their flight paths may be important in determining flock compactness. Birds within flocks responded to each other's position and maintained positions close to each other. In a flock groups. …

The Role-Taking Construct And Its Relationship To Social Acceptance, William P. Geary Jan 1983

The Role-Taking Construct And Its Relationship To Social Acceptance, William P. Geary

Open Access Dissertations

This research was undertaken to examine the role-taking construct as being a composite of two different component abilities, interrelating multiple elements and controlling the self. Each of these abilities was examined developmentally, and in relationship to social acceptance, intelligence and socioeconomic status. Developmental psychologists have stated that role-taking is an important social-cognitive ability for appropriate social behavior and peer acceptance. In a similar manner, research has linked a delay in role-taking ability to peer acceptance problems in certain populations. In this study, the multidimensionality of role-taking and its relationship to social acceptance in normal elementary school population is examined.

The Structure Of +He Ions In Cryogenic Helium Vapor, Gulden Akinci Jan 1982

The Structure Of +He Ions In Cryogenic Helium Vapor, Gulden Akinci

Open Access Dissertations

In this research we have studied the structure of +He ions in He vapor at temperatures between 1.32K - 4.22K and at saturation ratios between 0.05 - 1. Classical macroscopic thermodynamics predicts formation of a liquid drop around the ion, and the drop radius is given by the Thomson equation. In the above temperature and pressure ranges the radius of the drop varies between 6A - 9A. An experimental verification of the Thomson equation shows the validity of the macroscopic thermodynamics when it is applied to microscopic systems and also gives information about the drop structure. To show the …

An Examination Of Copper Speciation In Seawater, Douglas Lee Huizenga Jan 1982

An Examination Of Copper Speciation In Seawater, Douglas Lee Huizenga

Open Access Dissertations

The speciation of copper determines its chemical and biological interactions in the marine environment. Several methods have been employed in this work to examine the speciation of copper. The availability of total copper to measurement by anodic stripping voltammetry has been examined in coastal and open ocean waters in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean. In deep waters approximately 75% of the total copper is detected by anodic stripping voltammetry. In near surface and coastal water greater than 90% of the total copper is bound in species that are not detected by ASV. The availability of copper in coastal waters for uptake …

The Relationship Between Ethnicity And Self-Concept In Italian-Americans, Paul Robert Cassarino Jan 1982

The Relationship Between Ethnicity And Self-Concept In Italian-Americans, Paul Robert Cassarino

Open Access Dissertations

It is the purpose of this research to investigate the relationship of ethnicity and self-concept. Relationship here means that self-concept varies with ethnicity even when other variables, such as social class, age, etc. are similar.

In the literature review, the argument is developed that perceptions of self are in part formulated from the perception of oneself as being ethnic or having a particular ethnic heritage. These ethnic perceptions include belief systems, patterns of emotions, expectations, perceptions of the environment, sense of reality, interpretive schemes for interacting in the world, etc. In the development of self-perception or self-concept, these perceptions that …
