The potential of several new sugar matrices as direct compression vehicles has been investigated using a systematically organized series of tests. These matrices, produced by California and Hawaiian Sugar Company (C & H), were evaluated in a comparative manner with two commercially available products (DiPac and NuTab). In some cases, Emdex (another commercially available product) was also used. Moisture content, density, and flow properties were studied. Scanning electron micrographs were obtained to determine the morphology of the particles. Particles size spectra were generated for all the matrices. The statistical power of psychological research was examined in three studies. The purpose of Study I was to provide a general assessment of statistical power in psychological research. All of the studies using statistical tests in the 1982 issues of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (N = 142) were evaluated and compared to the results of a previous survey. Results indicated that the power of psychological research has increased over the past 20 years but that power must still be characterized as low. A client's stage of change at the beginning of therapy seems to be an important selection criterion to consider in relation to treatment outcome. A rational scale was developed in an earlier study to operationally define the theoretical stages of change. The present study attempted to cross-validate the scale on a new clinical sample (N = 327). The principal component, internal consistency, and cluster profile analyses demonstrated a replication of the original findings. The stages (Pre-Contemplation, Contemplation, Action, and Maintenance) were examined in relation to therapist ratings of treatment outcome, As predicted, Pre-Contemplators showed significantly less progress than subjects …

The fates of two four-ringed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), benz(a) anthracene and 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene, were examined in the large marine microcosms of the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory (MERLa) at the University of Rhode Island. The microcosms contain ecosystems that are representative of the conditions in lower Narragansett Bay. Two experiments with carbon-14 labeled benz(a)anthracene lasted 230 and 202 days and were begun in the summer and winter respectively. A summer experiment with carbon-14 labeled 7,12-benz(a)anthracene lasted 62 days. The parent compounds and their degradation products were examined in the water and sediments.

The different chemical forms of iron are an important factor in the marine biochemistry and geochemistry of this element. In this study, the forms and distribution of iron were investigated along a horizontal salinity gradient in the Connecticut River estuary in July 1981, and at a vertical profile in the Slope Water region of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean in September 1981. The redox state of iron was investigated in the offshore water of Peru in January 1984. This study investigates relationships among parent-child affectional interactions (nurturance vs. neglect and acceptance vs. rejection) and parental power assertion (verbal aggression and violence) experienced during childhood and adolescence, additional aspects of personal/familial history (incest, continuity of parental relationships, spousal violence, recent stressful life events, gender, family geographic mobility, family income, parental educational status), and current psychosocial functioning (self-esteem, psychophysiological distress, attributional style, anxiety, interpersonal affect, succorance, dominance, impulsivity, hostility-aggression, assertion, manifest rejection of children, violence approval, antisocial activity) in a mixed-sex sample group of 331 volunteer student subjects.

To determine empirically whether the comprehensiveness of the transtheoretical model of change (Prochaska, 1979) would benefit by the inclusion of personality and systems variables, 266 volunteers who had either quit smoking cigarettes in the recent past or were considering quitting in the near future completed the Activity Vector Analysis (AVA) and the Life Experiences Survey (LES), along with a Demographic and Smoking History Questionnaire. One-hundred-forty-one volunteers were self-changers, while 87 were attempting to change with the help of therapy. Six months later, subjects were asked to complete the first two instruments again, along with a Follow-up Questionnaire.

The relationships of visible nonverbal behaviors and characteristics of teachers to high school students' immediate impressions of teachers' abilities at classroom control were examined through two studies. The first was a correlational study: 44 college students were videotaped simulating teachers entering a classroom and beginning ,an initial class meeting. Students from a large comprehensive high school serving a middle-class and working-class town in New 'England rated the videotaped teachers.
