Effect Of Pre-College Factors On Students’ Retention During The First Two Years At A Small Private University In Ecuador, Marcelo X. Fernandez May 2015

Effect Of Pre-College Factors On Students’ Retention During The First Two Years At A Small Private University In Ecuador, Marcelo X. Fernandez

Open Access Dissertations

College graduation has known to have long-term effects on individuals, institutions, and countries’ economies. Even though the issue of students leaving college before graduation has been studied for almost a century, retention rates have remained almost stagnant. In many studies conducted in the United States, students’ pre-college traits have been found to predict student’s retention during the first two years of college. However, research on retention is lacking in Ecuador. The current study examined how a number of pre- and in-college characteristics were related to college student retention during the first two years of post-secondary studies in Ecuador. Using data …

"Writing On The Soil": Literature's Influence On African Land Rights, Ng’Ang’A Muchiri May 2015

"Writing On The Soil": Literature's Influence On African Land Rights, Ng’Ang’A Muchiri

Open Access Dissertations

My research underscores complex interactions between African artistic production, nationalism, gender inequality, and land rights. I deploy East Africa’s literary oeuvre—including novels, short stories and a Swahili play—to explore mutually informing social and artistic contexts that inspire phenomena as diverse as administrative land policies and utopian reformist schemes. I read transnational fiction against colonial photography and political manifestos, to address the “cross-pollination” of ideas and discourses. “Writing on the Soil” argues that postcolonial theory needs re-orienting towards materialist criticism and political conversations regarding resource inequality as suggested by texts that reflect on the material structures of neo/colonial domination in Africa. …

Does Power Make Us Mean? An Investigation Of Empowerment And Revenge Behaviors In The Cyberspace, Zongchao Li

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigated consumer response mechanism in a service failure context. A social-media-based Service Failure Response Model was introduced that incorporated emotive antecedents, behavioral outcomes, a mediation process, and moderating factors. The model integrated the framework of psychological empowerment, and explored how social media usage empowered users and whether this power transferred into unique behavioral patterns. It was argued that perception of power increased an action orientation in the power holder, which transferred into a revenge behavior when users complained about the failure on social media to publicly shame the company. The study proposed 16 hypotheses and two research questions …

The Political And Moral Economy Of Combatting Labor Exploitation: A Study Of Brazil's Policy Evolution, Menaka Mahajan

Open Access Dissertations

Although slavery was formally abolished in most countries decades ago, labor exploitation persisted without notable governmental efforts to address it. However, some countries have recently begun to adopt policies to reduce labor exploitation. This study investigates influences on policy change in the case of Brazil, a country that experienced drastic policy evolution in a short span of time. For years, the Government had denied the legitimacy of slave labor allegations. However, beginning in 1995, the Government of Brazil changed course, adopting policies that are now emulated abroad. This remarkable transformation is rather surprising considering the country’s history and reputation regarding …

Dopaminergic Variants In Siblings At High Risk For Autism: Associations With Joint Attention And Behavior Problems, Devon Nicole Gangi Apr 2015

Dopaminergic Variants In Siblings At High Risk For Autism: Associations With Joint Attention And Behavior Problems, Devon Nicole Gangi

Open Access Dissertations

Infant siblings at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD; high-risk siblings) exhibit lower levels of joint attention and higher levels of behavior problems than low-risk siblings (siblings with no family history of ASD), but also exhibit high levels of variability in these domains. The neurotransmitter dopamine is linked to brain areas associated with attention, reward, and motivation. Common genetic variants affecting dopamine neurotransmission, DRD4 and DRD2, have been associated with attention difficulties and behavior problems in typically developing children. We examined whether these variants explain variability in ASD-relevant behaviors in high-risk siblings. DRD4 and DRD2 genotypes for high-risk and low-risk …

Gideon Klein's String Trio: A Study, Robyn Clair Savitzky Apr 2015

Gideon Klein's String Trio: A Study, Robyn Clair Savitzky

Open Access Dissertations

This essay explores Gideon Klein’s identity through a study of the String Trio he composed at Terezín, a Nazi concentration camp outside of Prague. How did labels placed on this work influence his identity and music? How do modern classifications affect the music today? Works composed in concentration camps are often labeled “Holocaust music.” Today, such works are frequently programed in memorial concerts, a framework which lends itself to an oversimplified understanding of music’s role in the Holocaust. Through examining Klein’s String Trio within a performance and musicological context, this essay aims to answer questions about identity in music and …

Role Of Hematogenous Macrophages In Formation Of The Fibrotic Scar After Spinal Cord Injury, Yunjiao Zhu

Open Access Dissertations

After spinal cord injury (SCI), a fibrotic scar forms at the injury site that is best characterized by accumulation of perivascular fibroblasts and microglia/macrohpages as well as deposition of extracellular matrix proteins such as fibronectin. While the fibronectin marix plays a critical role in non-central nervous system (CNS) organ wound healing, whether or how fibronectin forms a matrix after SCI is not known. The mechanism by which perivascular fibroblasts are recruited to the fibrotic scar after SCI is also not clear. Using mutant mice and bone marrow transplantation in a mouse model of contusive SCI, we demonstrate that the fibrotic …

The Law And The Lady: Consent And Marriage In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Heather Lea Nelson Apr 2015

The Law And The Lady: Consent And Marriage In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Heather Lea Nelson

Open Access Dissertations

While many scholars have written on women and marriage in nineteenth-century British history and fiction, this dissertation, The Law and the Lady: Consent and Marriage in Nineteenth-Century British Literature, is the first to apply consent theory to those unions. Modern consent theory dictates that for individuals to consent, they must be autonomous, capable, educated, mature, and volunteering, and they must express consent with opportunities to retract those expressions. This dissertation asserts that because nineteenth-century British women usually lacked these components, their marital consent was partial, illegitimate, or absent. Fiction frequently equivocated about this social problem of contemporary female marital consent. …

In addition to the presence of FS, the length of stimuli sentences was manipulated and compared to a second independent variable. Responses to EI …

The Impact Of Early Life Adversity On Later Life Health, Abigail R Howard Apr 2015

The Impact Of Early Life Adversity On Later Life Health, Abigail R Howard

Open Access Dissertations

The preponderance of the literature on early life adversity suggests that adversity has negative effects on later life health; however, an emerging body of literature suggests that early life adversity may develop a sense of resilience in individuals. Drawing from life course perspective, the present research seeks to address this by asking how 16 early life adversities affect individuals' health over a 20 year period in adulthood. Further, the present research seeks to understand how individuals' perceptions of their health over the next few years may actually impact their health seven years later. In general, the more adversity a person …

Being Out Of The Loop On Pop Culture, Nicole Elizabeth Iannone Apr 2015

Being Out Of The Loop On Pop Culture, Nicole Elizabeth Iannone

Open Access Dissertations

Being out of the loop is a form of partial ostracism that leads to lower need satisfaction (Jones, Carter-Sowell, Kelly, & Williams, 2009). Research has shown that people experience lower need satisfaction when they are out of the loop on pop culture (Iannone, Kelly, & Williams, in preparation). Five studies expanded on previous research by exploring theoretical issues and potential boundary conditions. Study 1 developed a new method and explored theoretical foundations of being out of the loop on pop culture - whether being unfamiliar makes people feel worse or whether being familiar makes people feel better. This study also …

Sancho Panza: Su Conducta Y Sus Motivos, Wilson J. Melon Apr 2015

Sancho Panza: Su Conducta Y Sus Motivos, Wilson J. Melon

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation meticulously traces and analyzes the behavior and motivations of Sancho Panza throughout El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha and Segunda Parte del Ingenioso Caballero Don Quijote de la Mancha. To date, seemingly all criticism of Sancho has studied him on the basis of aspects of a particular episode or of a selection of episodes. In contrast, the contribution of the current monograph is its sustained and methodical approach to analyzing him and his development by means of scrutinizing every motive that he reveals and every action that he performs. I assert and demonstrate that the co-protagonist, …

Exclusion From Gender Counter-Stereotypic Activities: Proximal And Distal Effects, Megan Kathleen Mccarty Apr 2015

Exclusion From Gender Counter-Stereotypic Activities: Proximal And Distal Effects, Megan Kathleen Mccarty

Open Access Dissertations

The current work explored whether an incidence of exclusion is experienced differently depending on the activity from which one is excluded. Specifically, we investigated whether exclusion from gender stereotypic vs. counter-stereotypic activities affects both how threatening the experience is and beliefs about gender stereotypes. The effects of exclusion activity on need threat and beliefs about gender stereotypes were explored in a series of four studies using multiple methods: participants relived exclusion or inclusion instances from their real lives (Study 1), imagined exclusion or inclusion scenarios (Study 2), were excluded from a virtual ball toss game (Study 3), and were included …

How Do Moroccan Teachers Conceptualize Citizenship?, Tarik Saadi

Open Access Dissertations

Citizenship education plays a critical role in the development of civic attitudes and contributes to the appropriate delivery of a government's policy. However, there is a discrepancy in the literature in defining the meaning and understanding of citizenship concepts. This study is primarily qualitative in nature, using the method of phenomengraphy to investigate teachers' perceptions of citizenship in Morocco. The study recruited six elementary and secondary teachers from Casablanca and Rabat in Morocco to identify their understanding of citizenship. I adapted the three-phase interview approach proposed by Irving Seidman (1998) to frame the interviews with the teachers. The findings demonstrated …

Stability Of Machine Learning Algorithms, Wei Sun Apr 2015

Stability Of Machine Learning Algorithms, Wei Sun

Open Access Dissertations

In the literature, the predictive accuracy is often the primary criterion for evaluating a learning algorithm. In this thesis, I will introduce novel concepts of stability into the machine learning community. A learning algorithm is said to be stable if it produces consistent predictions with respect to small perturbation of training samples. Stability is an important aspect of a learning procedure because unstable predictions can potentially reduce users' trust in the system and also harm the reproducibility of scientific conclusions. As a prototypical example, stability of the classification procedure will be discussed extensively. In particular, I will present two new …
