The Effect Of Systematic Desensitization And Information On Attitudes Toward The Physically Disabled, Susan F. Cohen Jan 1978

The Effect Of Systematic Desensitization And Information On Attitudes Toward The Physically Disabled, Susan F. Cohen

Open Access Dissertations

This study was designed to investigate the modification of attitudes of the non-disabled toward physically disabled individuals via systematic desensitization and information. Subjects for experimental and control groups were taken from a pool of 212 non-disabled college freshmen and sophomores enrolled in basic psychology courses at the University of Rhode Island. Seventy-four subjects participated in the study. Their selection was made on the basis of their having little or no previous contact with physically disabled persons, and ATDP scores falling below the 50th percentile of students pretested.

The study was conducted considering the following assumptions: (1) anxiety is aroused on …

The Relationship Between “Rapid Induction” And Placebo Analgesia, Hypnotic Susceptibility, And Chronic Pain Intensity, Lorraine Luke Snow Jan 1978

The Relationship Between “Rapid Induction” And Placebo Analgesia, Hypnotic Susceptibility, And Chronic Pain Intensity, Lorraine Luke Snow

Open Access Dissertations

The effects of Rapid (hypnotic) Induction Analgesia (RIA) and an oral placebo on clinical and experimental pain were compared in 30 volunteer male paraplegic veterans with chronic pain syndrome. Scores of hypnotic susceptibility and chronic pain experience were also correlated with the effects of RIA on clinical and experimental pain. Self-ratings of S’s clinical pain on a 0-100 scale were obtained before and after RIA and placebo treatments. Threshold and tolerance for ischemic muscle pain (experimental pain) was measured during baseline control, RIA, and placebo sessions. The general linear hypothesis was used to analyse the data. The results indicate …

A Direct Comparison Of Three Fear Assessment Techniques, Donald Paul Corriveau Jan 1978

A Direct Comparison Of Three Fear Assessment Techniques, Donald Paul Corriveau

Open Access Dissertations

A review of the literature in avoidance behavior in general and response prevention (RP) in particular revealed that three different assessment procedures have been used to measure fear. Although the relative advantages and disadvantages of each procedure have been addressed at the conceptual level, they have received little empirical comparison. The present study systematically examined the following assessment procedures: l) the avoidance extinction technique, 2) the approach procedure, and 3) the conditioned emotional response (CER) procedure. Two different dependent variables were recorded within each assessment procedure. The first purpose of the study was to compare the relative sensitivity of each …

An Investigation Of Methodological Problems In The Cognitive Developmental Diagnosis Of Transitivity, Elizabeth S. Thayer Jan 1978

An Investigation Of Methodological Problems In The Cognitive Developmental Diagnosis Of Transitivity, Elizabeth S. Thayer

Open Access Dissertations

Discrepancies in the age of emergence of transitivity have been found by various investigators. Piagetians argue that transitivity emerges at approximately age seven to eight years while other researchers claim that children as young as four to five years have transitivity skills. It can be argued that these differing conclusions about the age of emergence of transitivity are possibly due to differences in methodological variables. The major objectives of the present investigation were to determine whether differences in the age of emergence of transitivity are due to methodological differences in: 1) type of training (active training vs. passive training) b) …

Effectiveness Of Butyrophenones And Related Drugs In Narcotic Withdrawal In The Rat, Martin Dennis Hynes Iii Jan 1978

Effectiveness Of Butyrophenones And Related Drugs In Narcotic Withdrawal In The Rat, Martin Dennis Hynes Iii

Open Access Dissertations

Narcotic dependence was established by continuous intravenous infusion of gradually increasing doses of morphine. Several days at the terminal concentration of morphine (100 mg/kg/day) was allowed prior to withdrawal. Morphine withdrawal body shakes were reliably observed upon the termination of continuous morphine infusion. The administration of morphine, methadone or _fentanyl, potent narcotic drugs, reliably abolished the occurrence of withdrawal body shakes 8 hours after the termination of morphine infusion. The narcotic antagonist naloxone or pentazocine had no significant effect on the rate of occurrence of withdrawal body shakes; however, there was a slight trend towards an increase in the frequency …

Closedmindedness As A Positive Behavior, Herbert Wax Jan 1978

Closedmindedness As A Positive Behavior, Herbert Wax

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how males and females who were categorized as either open or closedminded would respond to a Slide Show followed by a True/False Test and the Human Assistance Distance Scale (RADS) constructed for this experiment.

A group of subjects took Rokeach's Dogmatism Scale which differentiated them into openminded and closedminded groups. Both groups were matched by sex. They then viewed the Slide Show which consisted of low and high stress pictures, taken from a variety of sources. The subjects were then given a True/False Test related to factual content of the slides. They …

Facilitation Of Fear Reduction Following Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain In Rats, William A. Pacitti Jan 1978

Facilitation Of Fear Reduction Following Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain In Rats, William A. Pacitti

Open Access Dissertations

This study assessed the efficacy of positive electrical stimulation of the brain in counterconditioning fear in 100 albino laboratory rats. A parametric investigation was undertaken in which fear was conditioned through presentation of electric foot shock and then reduced through response prevention, in combination with different types of electrical stimulation of the brain. The basic measure of fear was the Conditioned Emotional Response (CER), as seen in the suppression of licking behavior.

Electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB) has been used to effectively reduce active avoidance responding, another measure of conditioned fear, and its effects resemble closely those obtained when …

Evaluation Of Pain As A Discriminative Stimulus In The Rat, Stephen Miksic Jan 1978

Evaluation Of Pain As A Discriminative Stimulus In The Rat, Stephen Miksic

Open Access Dissertations

Intraperitoneal injection of phenyl-p-benzoquinone (PBQ) was used in three experiments to evaluate its action as a potential model for the study of "pain" processes. Pain is operationally defined as: behavior which would be interpreted as pain related in man, specific actions of analgesic drugs to reduce this behavior, and ability of other pain producing chemicals to substitute for the PBQ treatment. In the first experiment PBQ administration produced dose-dependent writhing in hooded rats. This behavior was blocked by the narcotic analgesic, morphine, also in a dose dependent manner. In the second experiment 20 subjects were trained to respond on a …

Personality And Background Characteristics Of Women In Asextypical Occupations, Jeanne Parr Lemkau Jan 1978

Personality And Background Characteristics Of Women In Asextypical Occupations, Jeanne Parr Lemkau

Open Access Dissertations

To date, no study of occupationally asextypical women has compared a group of women in predominantly male fields to women of equal education in predominantly female fields. The correlates of academic attainment and atypicality of career choice are therefore confounded in the literature. The purpose of the present study was twofold. The first was to determine whether there would be correlates of asextypicality above and beyond those related to academic achievement and to determine the nature of these, in a design comparing asextypical professional women to their equally educated sextypical counterparts. A secondary purpose was to see if Bern's finding …

An Investigation Of A Simulated Spatial Technique As A Measure Of Interpersonal Distancing Behavior, Max C. Alovisetti Jan 1977

An Investigation Of A Simulated Spatial Technique As A Measure Of Interpersonal Distancing Behavior, Max C. Alovisetti

Open Access Dissertations

Due to ease of administration, many studies in the area of interpersonal distancing behavior have used simulated spatial measurement techniques. These have generally included manipulations of inanimate representations of people. They have often been assumed to be equivalent to behavioral measures of interpersonal distancing. The present investigation's major objectives were to determine the followings (1) extent to which a simulated spatial measure of interpersonal distancing is related to actual behavior; (2) whether interpersonal distancing can be understood in terms of a social learning model; (J) whether personality variables are related to a simulated spatial measure of interpersonal distancing; and (4) …

Life Satisfaction In Mobile And Non-Mobile Adults In The Early 30s, William Lawerence Wilson Jan 1977

Life Satisfaction In Mobile And Non-Mobile Adults In The Early 30s, William Lawerence Wilson

Open Access Dissertations

Developmental theorists have suggested that adults progress through normal developmental stages. The time around age 30 has been identified as a period of turmoil followed by a stage of settling down and setting roots in the early 30s. This study was done to determine if forced mobility has a negative impact on couples in their early 30s who are assumed to be facing a strong need to set roots.

Subjects for this study consisted of two groups of 20 mobile and 20 non-mobile couples. The mobile population consisted of 20 couples in which the male was a military officer experiencing …

An Empirical Investigation Of An Existential Theory As It Appears To The Elderly: The Will To Live, Ann M. Varna Garis Jan 1977

An Empirical Investigation Of An Existential Theory As It Appears To The Elderly: The Will To Live, Ann M. Varna Garis

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the Will to Live concept as it applies to the elderly. This was accomplished by exploring the relationship among the variables of Purpose in Life; Locus of Control; Depression; and a self-rating Will to Live scale. These are variables which, according to the literature, could be expected to be major components of the Will to Live concept. The subjects for this study were 63 volunteers, ranging in age from 60 to 95, taken from different housing settings, nursing homes; apartments for the elderly; and private homes in the community. In order …

Cognitive Complexity Of Clinical Psychology Students In Relation To Their Evaluation Of Contributions To Psychology, Dannel Hussey Starbird Jan 1976

Cognitive Complexity Of Clinical Psychology Students In Relation To Their Evaluation Of Contributions To Psychology, Dannel Hussey Starbird

Open Access Dissertations

The present study addressed the possibility that cognitive-complexity (Bieri, et al., 1966) relates to the

relative breadth with which clinical psychology students assess relevant contributions to psychology. A Q sort measure of view of psychology was devised using the names of 30 contributors to clinical and 30 contributors to nonclinical psychology. It was proposed that clinical psychology students with a narrow view of psychology would place greater emphasis upon clinical contributors, and that this tendency would be positively correlated with their level of cognitive-complexity. Secondly, it was hypothesized that there are not sex differences in cognitive-complexity, and that measures of …

Agency/Communion Balance And Its Relationship To Sex Role Stereotyping, Dorothy Thompson Jan 1976

Agency/Communion Balance And Its Relationship To Sex Role Stereotyping, Dorothy Thompson

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to examine a model of interacting with life situations which does not carry with it the restrictions implicit in the masculinity-femininity-androgeny concepts. However, the model includes positive aspects of behavior generally imbedded in the masculinity- femininity concepts. This model utilizes David Bakan's (1966) concepts of agency and communion, modifying his description of these modes of interacting and positing a complementary (completing, non-conflicting) relation between them. An agency/communion theoretical model was developed which emphasizes the potential for balance between the modes. Problems with the traditional gender dichotomy were discussed. The transcending of sex roles and …

The Effect Of Two Competitive Conditions And A Non-Competitive Condition On Performance And Retention On A Recognition Task, Thomas J. Comiskey Jan 1976

The Effect Of Two Competitive Conditions And A Non-Competitive Condition On Performance And Retention On A Recognition Task, Thomas J. Comiskey

Open Access Dissertations

Based on a review of the literature on competition, several hypotheses on the effects of competitive instructional set on both speed and accuracy measures were explored using a paired associate learning paradigm. One hundred and forty second graders (70 boys and 70 girls) were randomly assigned to three instructional treatments: speed competition, accuracy competition and non-competition. The competitive groups were further divided into relative positions of win, lose and tie; subjects were equally divided by sex, Although the subjects in the speed competition group performed significantly faster than subjects in the other conditions, no significant differences were found between any …

The Effects Of Self-Imposed And Externally Imposed Rewards Of Children's Intrinsic Motivation, Douglas Lee Schooler Jan 1976

The Effects Of Self-Imposed And Externally Imposed Rewards Of Children's Intrinsic Motivation, Douglas Lee Schooler

Open Access Dissertations

An experiment was designed to compare the effects of self-imposed, externally imposed, and a no reward control, on children's interest in both a high and low listening task. A hypothesis grounded in personal control theory predicted that self-imposed rewards would increase subsequent task interest, whereas externally imposed reward would interact with initial task interest and would yield a decrease in interest for the high interest task and an increase in interest for the low interest task. A secondary hypothesis predicted that children would self-reward with greater magnitude on the low interest task. The subjects, 48 boys and 48 girls from …
